How To Make Regular Nail Polish Last Longer Than Gel

Man and I thought only I knew this trick! Great video. I've been collecting regular nail lacquer for decades so when I started using gel, I found that even a thin gel overlay on my natural nails using builder in a bottle extended the longevity of my nail lacquer drastically as long as my nail prep was solid. Although I still love the curing time of gel, I no longer feel like I have to neglect my nail lacquers anymore.

Where do you buy your builder in a bottle?

@@graceandpurls I’ve used a number of different kinds, but my current fave is Nail Thoughts Tinted Base Gel. I’ve also used Madam Glam’s Builder in a Bottle and their newest Rubber Base. Both are good, but the rubber base is better if you have thin flexible nails.

This is good advice, when I wore regular polish I did all of it. The reason I switched to gel with a rubber base overlay is not only longevity (2-3 weeks no problem) but resistance to breaking. I used to grow them out and then break one, either cut them back or slapped on a press on nail. I grew aggravated with that cycle. In a year of wearing gel I have had a single break, I slammed the finger in a drawer and the top of the nail ripped away. The rubber base just tore, that was nice to know that it didn't try to take the whole nail with it. I have had a few cracks, same as I used to get with regular polish. I used to silk wrap or them repair with acrylic powder, now I use polygel to repair. As for taking them off...e file all the way, no soaking here. I e file down to the first rubber base layer then switch to a hand file. I leave a thin coating of rubber base on between manicures, it doesn't tend to lift. Now polygel will lift after a month or so, it must be replaced if I still need it for repair. Anyway there is so much to learn to do gel on yourself safely. Allergies and damage from the e file were my main concerns, now I work on perfecting technique. It is definitely not for everyone to do on themselves, and going to a salon would be a pain. So I wrote all that to ask which OPI color are you using here? I did not see it specifically in the amazon list of products you have😊

Yesssssssssss this, my nails are very thin and I have two that I smashed in a door when I was small that still hasn't recovered, and a rubber base gel was the only thing that has saved my nails

For a topcoat that has worn like armor for me that also has that plumpness, I use 2 at the same time. I'll do a layer of KBshimmer or Glisten & glow (both great on their own) but then immediately followed without waiting for drying with Seche Vite. Give a glossy, hard shell coating like nothing else I've been able to achieve with regular topcoat.

Thank you for this video! I use regular polish so it can be easily removed when needed. Did you put your base coat over a gel builder? I was thinking of using a gel builder but read not to put regular polish over it. Can you recommend a good gel builder?

Not sure of which exact shade of red this is, but I highly recommend trying OPI’s “Rebel with a Clause.” This is a beautiful shade of red, looks great on long or short nails. I get compliments everytime I wear it. Try it, I promise you will not be disappointed. 😊

I have a question about base coat. I don't typically use it, but last year, I used one (just once). It did make my manicure last a lot longer. But after taking it off, I noticed a lot more ridges in my nails. This is something I never get (I don't wear nail polish often). I didn't buff or dehydrate my nails before applying the base coat. I just cleaned with soap, let them dry, and applied the base coat. It was on for about 2 weeks. I use a gentle polish remover when I do use nail polish. Eventually, the ridges grew out. But is this a thing that normally happens if you use base coat? I have used regular polish directly on my nails many times before, without getting ridges. Does it weaken the nails somehow? 🤔

we use this at the salon i work at! i like it but the color bottles dry quickly and the top coat bubbles if it’s old too, however i do like that it lasts long

OPI is a good quality polish, CND VINYLUX POLISH is very long lasting. A good quality Topcoat and basecoat does matter! I use Zoya Armor Topcoat as a basecoat as well, it's so grippy! UK 🇬🇧 16.7.24
