Thank you Faye D'Souza for this interview. Hearty Congratulations to Mr. Jabed Akhtar on being the first Indian to receive the Richard Dawkins award. Personally it means a lot to me, as Atheism has been my style of thinking since I was about 10 years old. Soon after my 11th birthday I declared to my parents that I am not able to find any reason to believe in god. Being a secular, humanist as a natural path from atheism, has been my 'personal is political' for a long time. Hence, Mr. Javed Akhtar recieving this award at this particular time gives me joy. It feels good, when the world news recognises him for this award, the message which goes beyond words is that there are people, in India, who are not interested in building a society centred around religious identity thrust upon a person on the basis of the household they were born. It feels happy that as a result of this award, there is some coverage in the media on atheist, secular humanist thinking. It gives a reason to continue to hold on to hope.

I can't deny it coz I visited "Gaur Brahman Sangh" a few times when I was very young, along with some others like Maheshwari Sanghs, Sindhi sanghs, Sikh Sangh's (don't remember the names)- some with my friend's family etc. I really don't think anyone is missing much since the only thing that happens there are playing games and winning prize money or gifts - at least in my experience. I always used to think each community has there Sangh but apparently, it's perceived as something discriminatory, Although I haven't been to one in years, in MY experience, people just do it for social gatherings and no one cares if you are from any other community if you are with someone in there. Or maybe it started discriminatorily - I don't know its history - but I think it's irrelevant to the current context. Just judge people on their actions and as individuals and rather than name-calling every other group. People who think Sanghis are bad, why is that? Feel free to educate me if I am missing something!

@@azharchaudhary952 Sure, I can try to explain... I will try to explain why I think it right to believe in atheism. 1) The theory of god has no proof. So, believing in god is like believing in Cthulu mythos or any other fantasy beings. Do not come at me, asking me to give a proof that god does not exist. This responsibility must lie on the proposer of the theory. Till the time we get a proof about the existence of a Supreme Creator, we should not put our chips in this theory. 2) There is a book called the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. I think you should give it a try. It is a bible of sorts and quite good satire on the theory of god. One more theory if you will. 3) Now, I come more directly at your question. Think why a man rejects (sometimes, even ridicules) many other gods and chooses to believe in one particular god. Similarly, there will be people who do not believe in this man's god and ridicule it. They are able to see through the ridiculous claims of each other's religion but not their own. And no, that does not mean god does not exist. It is similar to not believing in the one-eyed people living under your skin and not believing that our brain is filled with a carrot whose leaves come out of the head in the form of hairs. 4) In the video, Mr. Akhtar explains faith and belief which might help might help along with many other good points. I would like to thank you for asking me this question, and not fixating on my ridicule. I hope we get something out of this religion. The ball is in your court now. Waiting for the proof of god....

An atheist muslim is sandwiched between religious muslims and religious hindus in India and even Pakistan which is full of extremely religious muslims. Religious muslims would not like many of his statements which they feel are against Islam and term him fake muslim. A religious Hindu will not like many of his statements which they feel are hurting hindu sentiments and are made because after all Javedsahab is a Muslimby birth. Only liberals and atheists would understand Javed. It is proven that the tolerance level of a religious person towards an atheist is very less as compared to an atheist's tolerance level towards a religious person. An Athiest is necessarily a humanist because his common sense tells him that it is most important for human life to flourish with peace and prosperity for this world to function smoothly. It is his common sense and not the fear of God which makes him believe so.

Festivals are cultural. And I this culture we have worshipping culture so we can worship anything for their qualities regardless of whether they exist or not/ living or dead. So why worry about believe? We can celebrate anything without worshipping. I am not a Christian but I don't mind going to church to pray to a higher power and celebrating Christmas or whatever but don't believe in the Bible. Most people in India are like that only, the problem arises when a person is brainwashed into believing that their identity is their "religion". No, our identity is Indian, like Rajasthani, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil and so on. Some of our ancestors were converted so we have different names but we still follow our culture. People like Zakir Hussain, he is spiritual and treats his music as such and will play devotional songs. Hindu people visit churches and mosques all the time, all people celebrate Diwali. Belong to your nation and culture and teach religion to children (all good and bad) only after they are above 18.

I am an atheist myself and as such I share most of the views. I have also learnt many things here. I liked especially the 10% difference between believers and nonbelievers and the argument about suicide. I have a couple of comments which are mere . I grew up in a very religious Sikh family and was brought up to pray. At 13-16 years I happened to give a lot of thought to this aspect and at 17-18 started questioning my friends' beliefs. Married an atheist and we were astounded to hear our 3-year old daughter making fun of the religious beliefs of her friend, although we thought we never discussed any aspect of God in the house. My point is that atheism was inculcated quickly within the same generation, i.e. my generation. The second thing is that in my view, organized religion is actually politics by another name, though most people may not realize it.

I am thankful my parents never forced religion upon me. Never insisted on not practicing the norms of navratras, i was free to eat Beef(althogh i stopped because of personal reasons) and have never been compelled to enter a temple. While I am unsure whether god exists or not, i chose to stray away this cult like practice which in a world of ts diminishing significance mantains limelight by creating sheer unrest in the society. Stick by your ethics and morals and if God and afterlife are real, your good deeds will be credited and if your God requires you to feed his statues and live in fear of a greater power, is your God really so fickle?
@user-yq9ex7hr1i4 жыл бұрын
Well God is definitely not fickle but humans due to their mind is fickle. The nature of the mind is to stray away. Thoughts are constantly bombarding our minds, God can be attained with or without idol. Vivekananda was full of doubt over the existence of God, and Ramakrishna paramhansa told him that an atheist is more capable of believing than a person who blindly believes, because he only believes once he has completely satisfied. When he believes nothing can waiver his belief. Sanatan Dharama is the only religion is the only religion where atheism is not looked down upon infact there was a branch within Sanatan Dharama which was of atheists. If you claim to be so open minded then do not be closed to the idea of idol worship. Swami Vivekananda who was against idol worship, fell into the feet of the the greatest idol worshipper. If you are open minded then please do not be closed to the thought of feeding idols of God. Science only questions the physical aspects of this universe. But the very existence of this planet in the middle of this infinite vaccuum makes us wonder how. The planet is so intricate that even one aspect if missing would've made our existence impossible. The atmosphere, the ozone layer, the speed of rotation the revolution the tilt of the Earth. Do you think it's all a wonderful coincidence. Only ppl full of arrogance and bubbled up ego can mock people's feeling or their way of connecting with the super power. It's good to be questioning but a believer in science how about asking questions that science cannot answer. That what made it all possible. Because you are so closed minded that you don't even question things that are beyond the sense perception. My advice to you is since you don't follow any one particular religion please don't spend your energy in mocking your own culture but start understanding why from authentic sources. To start with pickup reading books Vivekananda principles. You will get all answers. Please find out the answers.

One more thing abt your statement on feeding idols out fear. You are so ignorant about your on culture.. Tell me did your mother fed you out of fear or love? Devotees feed out of love. You don't feed someone out fear. If your heart is filled with love for God, there is no question of hate and fear. This God fearing thing is not of our culture. In our culture it's questioning seeking, loving and realising God

Religion and casteism are several centuries old. How many more centuries they are going to last? Already there are so many who speak vociferously against these two practices that have created a lot of divide socially and politically.

I felt hopeful about my country after a very long time. Thank you so much. I genuinely needed this.
