The opening sprint of the season was a wild ride which resulted in another successful, but hard-fought, J13 class win!
The problems started even before the event, when a top-end engine issue motivated a last-minute change of cams, lifters and rev limit! This meant mapping updates continued right until the last moment, with some changes even made en route!
Initial conditions at Blyton Park were decidedly damp but drying, and times continued to topple until a midday monsoon had other ideas.
This meant the afternoon became a shootout as the 19°C sun quickly dried the track. After holding P2 but trailing class leader Tom Barnes for most of the day, on our fifth run we found some extra speed and seized a 0.76s lead!
But it was on our sixth and final run when the fun really started. As we waited in line our engine spluttered to life and coughed out a plume of smoke. Then, it refused to idle entirely. We nursed it around another lap but were unable to improve after a big mistake in The Wiggler. Data review after the event reveals a bizarre intermittent electrical problem as the cause of a total injector no-fire condition..!
Fortunately, our existing time was enough to cling on to P1 of six in class, and 51st from 100 entrants overall despite being in one of the (s)lowest classes. Shout out again to Tom for closing the gap to just 0.38s and also to Josh Greaves who placed 3rd in class and only 1.52s behind our time in his first ever sprint event!
All signs point to more super-close competition next time at Croft Circuit!
