I used to draw pretty well as a teenager and did the copy method, where I copied but changed something to add a little "me" into it. Then I stopped for years, and now, I'm trying to just enjoy drawing again, graphite, shading, nothing more. I planned a lot of drawing for 2025 and accidentally running into this video just made me want to stick to it. Thanks!

I used to learn drawing by self-teaching in April 30.Since that day, I have found many books and videos about how to learn drawing. According to these methods, I have drawn many straight lines and believe it can help to improve my drawing skill. And just as you said, I failed. Although I have learn drawing more than half year, my skill increase nearly zero. After watching your video, I stick the belief that drawing skill could only increase when you copy image with your insight and imagination. Thanks for your enlightenment.

That duck whistle thing got me thinking about a neat exercise. Draw some simple objects that are pretty simply shaped. Maybe one object is vaguely triangularly wedge shaped, maybe another is a cylinder, and another would be maybe box shaped or a flat rectangle like a phone. Once you get a few of these, practice drawing them from different angles. Now once you are comfortable drawing them from those angles, put them together on the page in a way that it implies a new more complex object. I was thinking about a few things that can be put together to make something like that duck whistle, but it is made up of several of the simpler objects. I think that this idea was inspired also in part by paintings of portraits but the faces are made up of smaller images of fruits and vegetables. These won't have to be as complicated, but I think it could be pretty useful, especially with understanding that larger complex objects are really just a bunch of smaller simpler objects placed right by each other and maybe modified a little to become something new.

this is one of the exercises in the draw a box course. pretty much all of the exercises are "scales". at some point you're asked to draw intersecting basic shapes in 3D space. later, you use that knowledge to construct animals, plants and vehicles. i recommend at least watching/reading the first lesson. it has very good explanations for getting better at draftsmanship and line making, which is rarely explored in other courses. i especially like the explanation about drawing from the shoulder, which i hadn't heard about before.

I really really like that you are not someone who just tells you "You have to practice intensely and have NO FUN!!!" I know: A bit exaggerated. But it often feels like that. How the hell am I going to draw something, if I don't know how? By trying out! But why should I keep trying, if it is no fun to me? Well simply put: It is fun! But I am not a person that has fun to overcome a hardship. I have fun to follow something my mind enjoys to engage in. When hardship comes in this process, I have come my way to even get there. And then, and only then, I find myself feeling a will, that wants to push a little bit further through, because I have a feeling, that I am close, or at least closer, to achieve what I couldn't imagine doing at the start of the process of... everything I guess! Spotting mistakes one made to do it better in the future is absolutely right to improve, but if I play a competetional online game I don't want to study Pro-Leagues and tactics, but just play around and see what goes, until I am accustomed to that. Thank you very much for supporting people like me, who feel discouraged by others telling me to "just do things until it get's better", even if I feel miserable along the way, but instead feel encouraged through showing that even the little things one does count along the way and help you get strong, when you are at the lowest level you will probably ever achieve when trying something out, namely: The starting point 🫶🏻

It's much simpler and easier to learn and I rarely get art block, but part of me wishes I could have become better at the stylised version because that was more interesting for me to draw, but it constantly gave me art block because of the complexity of the projects and how time-consuming they could be. Overall a nice video to get people drawing, but I disagree with some things: - All types of drawings are based on reality - whether they look like like it or not. If you go into a "stylized" or "funzies" path, then it would mean that you eventually you would be stuck because you don't know what you are exactly doing or you would be just copying somebody's "style". Know the rules before you break them. - The best way to learn drawing is from real life objects or models. And if you don't have access to them, use photos. Unless you know an artist is really really good, copying from artists would also mean that you will copy their "mistakes" and how do you know what is correct or not if you just started drawing? That being said, some two most important skills are almost never mentioned: - Learn to be critical and self-evaluate. It never helps saying "this sucks" or "I will be do better next drawing" without evaluation. Try to find why your drawing works or doesn't work and you can improve from there. If you can't find why, try to find reading/video-material to what you think that might be wrong, whether it be colour values, anatomy, perspective, whatever. This is the most important skill to develop and can make you improve really fast. - Also something I never hear artist/tutorials say, but try to learn to really look at the real world with the knowledge you have (ust) learned. This is so valuable. For example, if you just learned something about shapes, try to look at the world and dissect it into shapes. So not just when you are drawing, but also when you are sitting in the bus, walking around on the streets, etc.

I really want to follow the stylized path but i have heard so many times that fundamentals like anatomy and values are really important. Shall i pursue academic and stylized together? Will it affect my art journey in a negative or a positive way?

Some of the channels I recommend tackle anatomy and values from a stylized point of view. Still, throughout your art journey you’ll find yourself using resources from every style in existence.

I'm 98 years old and terminally ill. Can I still learn to draw? 🤔
