The rise of Javier Milei came amid a period of serious crisis for Argentina, which in 2023 led the world in debts to the International Monetary Fund at a whopping $34 billion USD. Vowing to revive the economy and crack down on crime, Milei has unveiled an agenda for austerity, deregulation, and privatization of the economy that is already hitting working class Argentinians hard. After just one month in office, the poverty rate in Milei's Argentina jumped from 49% in Dec. 2023 to 57% in Jan., 2024. The Real News reports from Buenos Aires shortly following Milei's election, speaking directly with supporters of the new president and experts on Argentina's right-wing to understand the factors that contributed to Milei's election.

Solutions to crime is not more police repression and brutality... If you have done any research on this you would know that it has been shown time and time again that increasing police presence and brutality increases crime rates, while providing social programs and welfare that help the working class reduces it. More police means that the people get more repressed and more desperate and more likely to turn to crime.

@challe535

@@whitehavencpu6813 This is a general rule, most studies done on this show that increasing policing leads to increased crime. This is because increased policing and increased inprisonment casuse poverty. Police crackdown on workers when they for example go on a strike, preventing workers from getting their share of the profits they produce and increased incarceration removes workers from their communities which then cause communities to get more and more impoverished. Crime rates in El Salvador were already plumeting when Bukele took over the presidency, since then he has increased policing and taken credit for the already decreasing crime rate. In other words crime rates were plummeting under the presidency of Sánchez Cerén, a left wing politician, and Bukele is now taking advantage of that to increase policing and mass incarceration, having the police randomly harass people, indiscriminently inprison people, while also torturing and killing prisoners, a significant number of which hadn't even been found guilty of anything. If you want some reference on what mass incarceration does to a society have a look at this paper and its many references: Robert H.
