I just noticed that I left one clip out of this video. The best clip. I'm going to have to redo this video after I find some more hobo tags and then add the best clip that I forgot to add. I have a video showing Shoestring making his tag in Missouri. The one clip that I forgot to add and it was the most important one. I was up too late. lol

Thanks for the notes, JT! All of your YT train followers understand. No worries! Yes, Mark ("Hobo Shoestring") is THE most beloved of all the hobos in many ways and we would LOVE to see him. He was featured very briefly in one of your recent videos. I have followed him for years along with "Brave Dave" and the late "Stobe." I could NEVER do what they do since it is not only illegal and I don't want to get caught but it is also VERY dangerous! Even with all that, what they do on trains is something nearly all of us will NEVER see and do and it is quite interesting.

@@perchlarkin Thanks for the update on Shoestring, Markus. I had been wondering when he was going to have his surgery. I hope and pray that it is successful and we will see him back on the rails soon. In the meantime, I will keep praying for him from New Mexico. @@jerryfairgrieve7136 Thanks for your interesting reply, Jerry! I really felt horrible for Stobe since he had a HUGE drinking problem. Not sure if he ever got any help for it, though, and he left this life much too soon. May he rest in peace. And yes, we will pray for Shoestring to have a VERY successful surgery so he could be back out on the rails asap. JT does do GREAT train videos and you got that right! I will be 69 next month and have always had a LOVE for trains. I have always been fascinated by hobos, too, but could NEVER do what they do for various reasons. And while I do NOT condone all the graffiti on trains now, I have to admit that there are some VERY gifted artists out there with their VERY colorful, unique and often funny tags. I just wish they would do their "artwork" legally on murals since the railroads will never be able to catch them all and never be able to cover up all their tags.

I was at a railroad crossing in backed-up traffic about a month ago where I stopped before the tracks. I told my friend that if I stopped on the tracks a train will probably come. When there was enough room for me to pull forward I did, but so did the car behind me. The back half of that car was on the tracks, when moments later I heard a train coming. Everyone pulled up a little and he was able to get off the tracks just before the train came thru. Like JT said "do not do that".

Some people will never learn! Not until they earn a Darwin Award. Where I live, some, not all, really busy, heavily trafficked RR Crossings have signs that read: DO NOT STOP ON TRACKS and has a depiction of a train hitting a vehicle, yet morons continue to stop in the tracks, and quite often get hit. Used to be Amtrak and CSX took these buffoons out, now that CSX sold the tracks to SunRail, now SunRail has been taking out quite a few vehicles as well as pedestrians walking along the tracks. Many earning there well deserved, and apparently coveted, Darwin Award.

That derailer as you called it is what we use in the UK and also in most of Europe. It is what we call a trap point. They are sometimes a full set of point blades and sometimes just a single blade to turn any runaway vehicles away from the running lines. They are usually connected to the same point lever that works the turnout onto the main line. It was the money saving omission of a trap point that led directly to the major crash at Ladbrook Grove near Paddington on the Great Western main line some years ago. The American derailer system is seldom used here presumably because it is easy to rerail vehicles onto a trap point as they are often fitted with rails that slope down into the ballast. Incidentally ties made of recycled plastic are now being used in the UK even in pointwork. We have used some on the Ffestiniog Railway 1ft 11 1/2inch narrow gauge line in North Wales over the last few years. They are supposed to have a longer life than wood and to be more elastic and give a softer ride than concrete or metal ones, plus they are recyclable!

Thank you for documenting these trains in Erlanger, Kentucky on 10 June 2022, Jaw Tooth! Sometimes you wonder what people are thinking when they sit on a railroad track when the light is red especially when the track has commuter trains running on the track. This is the first I have seen any information on the Hobo tags. Usually no one is taking videos boxcars sitting in a freight yard. Usually you just see boxcars whizzing past you at a railroad crossing where it is impossible to read anything on a passing boxcar.

Since the beginning of time, railroad crossings and vehicles have always been a problem. Nigh on a half century ago I was on the lead engine when we struck a tractor trailer rig at the intersection of Long Point Road and Hempstead Highway [US 290]. He was trying to clear the very busy US 290 and got too close to the tracks. We smashed him. He did survive. Just broke a wooden running board on the engine. Then there was the winch truck on Campbell Road and US 290. He was stuck on the tracks because cars had bunched up and he couldn't go forward or backwards. Then there was the VW Beetle that we missed by Norfie's whisker coming out of Hempstead. Surprised both me and the engineer. Then there was the various assortment of deer and cattle. That stuff stinks once smashed and sounded like the old paper bags filled with air and popped.

Speaking of the cars and trains issue .My gf rode with the world's worst entitled driver the other day .The woman remarked after them nearly being ran down by an extremely close CSX at high speed at a crossing the train had to stop for her not she stop at the crossing .My gf who is close friends with the engineer and his family was livid at this line of thinking and nearly being ran over lit into her and let her have it .I am sure this man would like to go home to his wife and kids safely not having ran over someone that day and hurt or killed them .She called the engineer later to ask how close the train actually was and it was less than 10 feet .This sort of nonsense has got to stop when it comes to cars and trains .Naturally if this person had been hit it would have been the train's fault in this person's eyes .The woman told my gf she didn't know what she was talking about when it comes to trains .My gf has been a huge railfan for nearly 60 years and has always been respectful of these massive machines keeping her distance at all times.Trains are always closer than they appear and moving faster than you think .My gf's daughter is a paramedic also and has worked a few of these in her time not a pleasant sight to witness to say the least .Be careful out there folks around any train .

Seen the Freight Bandit tags quite a bit, but not one that simplified. There's someone called Impeach/Mpeach in the Twin Cities (MN) who does both small tags or large graffiti. Another one I've seen many of is a Dark Knight Batman symbol with "TG" on it and a saying and date under it, not sure who that is. I take lots of pictures of graffiti for model railroading so I have quite a few of these smaller tags/monikers for reference material.
