The last train produced an abnormal noise on the crossing, accentuated with speed. If you look closely to the left of the crossing, you can see a small vertical movement of the rail at the passage of the wheels of the cars. The track geometry may need to be checked here.
@JawTooth2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Thanks for watching!
@tmwinkler2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It sounded like it was bouncing quite a bit. It was difficult for me to make it out at the wheel level, but if you watch the tops relative to the utility poles, you can see it bounce.

Hello JT, the train is going a bit faster then your actual reading. When you stand off at an oblique angle you get was is known as cosine affect. This will give you a slower reading then the actual speed. For the most accurate reading you must be in directly in front of the train (not a good idea) or behind. Hope this answers your question.
@JawTooth2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I will try that
@davidwilson96122 жыл бұрын
Mr. Gold is correct. If you know the angle, divide the radar speed by the cosine of the angle to get a more accurate speed.

Another great video with a variety of different trains. That last train was making some rather worrying noises as the cars were going onto the crossing. Maybe a track fault there, a hump or twist that was making the couplers ride up and down against each other. It's always a danger spot where rails pass over other fixed height structures, crossings and bridges are often the source of derailment. Any change of height means the rail tracks need to be adjusted in height over a long distance to allow a gentle alteration so the profile otherwise even a minor problem gets to be a bigger one as speed increases. I've seen derailments at crossings that looked perfectly OK but then you investigate and find a soft spot that might only show as a trains weight goes onto it. Doesn't always derail a car but puts severe stress on each one as it passes over and can cause couplers to fail and stress cracks in the trucks.

In using your Radar Gun. I understand that you must point it to the on coming traffic/train. To get a proper reading, You will get an improver reading pointing it in the passing traffic/train. That is what I was told about a radar gun, I would ask your local police department. I'm sure they will give you the correct information you need, I as well believe that the train was going faster than what your radar gun was registering. Another great video JT. RADAR: When using a RADAR to measure the speed of the train, the actual speed can only be determined when the train is approaching directly toward the RADAR, meaning standing on the track with the RADAR. The RADAR measures the speed component of any thing approaching directly toward the RADAR. The actual speed of the train is higher than the RADAR measures when at off angles. The actual speed of the train is the RADAR measured speed divided by the cosine of the off angle.
@JawTooth2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the information!
@jdm10392 жыл бұрын
Jawtooth - The angle you were holding the radar pointed at the CP train early in the video likely caused the reading to be a bit lower than its true speed. The wider the angle the higher the radar error causing the speed displayed to be lower. The most accurate is straight on which I know isn't always possible. You may have already known this but just in case! I agree with you. The trains seem to be going faster than that. They probably are. Not sure of the accuracy of an inexpensive radar from Amazon.
@july8xx2 жыл бұрын
That was my thought when I saw him use the gun at such a high angle. I also noticed that the speeds are also always higher when tested going away instead of toward him.
