Train Gets A Run At The Hill! Struggling, All 3 Locomotives Needed On Cincinnati Eastern Railroad!

One Of The Heaviest Trains Yet To Run Up Williamsburg Hill! The Entire Serviceable Roster Was Needed To Get This Rock & Grain Train Over The Steep Grade. This is the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad In Williamsburg, Ohio. This short line railroad operates on Norfolk Southern tracks in southern Ohio.
The first scene is downtown Mount Orab, Ohio between the main railroad crossings in town. The train is running westbound with a GP15-1, SD40-2, GP15-1 consist. The train is coming back from Hanson quarry at Plum Run. They also worked the grain elevator in Winchester, worked McCoy Lumber in Peebles and picked up some storage flat cars. All of the cars are loaded except the flat cars. Notice the caboose and train station in Mt Orab as the train passes them. Rarely do they use their entire operational fleet on one train. The MP15DC has been on the maintenance track in Sardinia for a while and I haven't seen it used in a long time.
Next, we go to one of my favorite railroad crossings. This is on the western edge of Mount Orab at Eastwood Road. The house at that crossing has a perfect view but I have never seen them watch a train. Sup wit that? The old rock cars are still sitting here and make a nice backdrop.
Then we see the awesome shot in Williamsburg! Listen to the locomotives working hard as they attack the hill. This is really cool because it is a fight to get up the grade that is also on tight curves. See my videos of trains stalling on this hill and you will know what I mean. Today they had plenty of power and speed to make it over fairly easily. The train crossed Gay Street at 2:19pm and then did some switching at Afton Yard.

It is amazing that over 200 years later the signal of 2 longs a short and a long are still used as a warning (or announcement) as I understand it. It started when the Queen of England traveled by ship and they used the Morris code for Q, to announce the Queen was there (and to make way). When she traveled by train they used the same code. Sorry, but that Queen Victoria story is not true. British trains do not whistle long-long-short-long at grade crossings and, to the best of my knowledge, never have. There would never be any need for a train to whistle to indicate that the Queen was on board. They would never need to tell other trains that the Queen was on board, because British railways are all signal-controlled, so the signallers (dispatchers) would already be keeping lower-priority trains out of the way. And they'd never need to tell road traffic at a grade crossing that the Queen was on board, because all trains have priority over road traffic, just by being a train.

Oh, and btw, it's not quite "more than 200 years" -- Morse code was only invented in the 1844, and the code for Q didn't become --.- until 1848.

The 2 longs, a short and 2 longs were a signal that the Queen's ship was coming (and a warning to get out of the way). It just so happened the letter Q was associated with that sequence.@@beeble2003

Three locomotives should ensure success in making it over the road as today's train has substantial weight with only six empty cars. I'm sure the crew wants to get home today without doubling the hill. Just looking at that frozen ground reminds one you don't want to get stuck and Chessie seconds that! Apparently one of the shops has room to start working on those flat cars and you can tell they used to be Autoracks with those little ramps at the end of the car to allow you to move to the next car. Now that the car no longer has the side panels all that's left for their artwork is the small graffiti on the car frame. Glad you were able to make the most of our shorter days and CCET didn't disappoint

Odds are in about 2 weeks, that hill will be snow covered. Wonder what Loki will do in snow? Noted rusted, ancient rotary signal in the background. Next year, RAM is supposed to have combined 600+HP Plug in Hybrid pickup truck. Could be interesting transportation? Supposedly, BN&SF experimented with battery locomotive to act as a brake going down dangerous hills and a boost going up steep hills.

Hi, Jaw Tooth! Another good video! There were 37 cars: 17 grain, 5 tie gons, 5H, 4G and 6 empty flats. One of your earlier videos showed a 42 car train, so this one is 5 cars shorter! Although, I’m thinking most of them were empty, if not all of them, and it was going in the opposite direction. At least 22 of these were loads (you’ll have to enlighten me about the stone cars, loads or empties!).

Thanks for the info! I almost forgot about that longer train. I think it was all empties. This one is all loads except the flat cars. The hopper cars and gons on the end are CCET rock cars that stay on this line for the rock shuttle.

I think Jaw Tooth mentioned that the MP15DC had recently been used to switch rock cars. The pair of GEs are stored out of service, as far as I'm aware.

The switcher was being used to unload the rock cars but for the past month it has been on the maintenance track in Sardinia. There are 3 other locomotives stored out of service in Sardinia. The other units were shipped out west to other lines that they own.

Should be the same length. They used to be auto racks. They took the racks off and either re-used them or scrapped them. The flats are being stored and are past their useful life. I’m guessing they’ll end up scrapped! If you notice any Trailer Train equipment with R1 stenciled on the side close to the number, it means they are more than 50 years old (50 being the useful life under FRA rules, unless extensively rebuilt) and have been given special permission by the FRA to continue operating. All of the auto racks and long trailer/ container cars are the same length, except for earlier built cars were a little shorter. The long box cars you see are also a little shorter: Older trailer flats inside length (end to end without couplers and pockets, just the body) 85 feet. Outside length over coupler pulling faces 88 feet 5 inches. Even earlier ones were IL 75 feet OL 78 ft. 5 in. Today, they are all IL 89’4” OL 93’8” with few variations in OL. The long box cars are IL 86’6” OL anywhere from 91’ and inches to 93’11”.
