No one else does what Jay does. That is to say, shares his collection with all of us in a way that the common guy can appreciate. No talking down to us, just sharing in everyday language what is going on in his car world. Love this stuff. No one else with an extensive car collection is doing this, to my knowledge. It is a public service. My hat is off to you Jay!

Jay, if it ain't broke don't fix it! Please listen to your heart. You said after servicing the Benz it runs great. Just drive it and enjoy. My family owned a Ford dealership in small town in western WA for 72 years. I worked there for 9 years. I had about every job in the place. Enjoyed buying cars at the auction in South Seattle. Left the car business in 1971 and have been kicking tires ever since. Really enjoy Jay Lenos Garage. I learn a lot. Many Thanks. Edwin Scott Howe.

I'm actually a big fan of Resto-modding, BUT Jay said it himself, the year it was put out it was the fastest four door, and the engine is strong. If it was a '68 Camero I'd say "Keep nothing but the sheet metal", but that car was something special new, nice to restore so you can experience what "fast" used to be.

Great update Jay, I am constantly in awe of the vast variety of different types of cars in your collection. Please keep the 6.3 stock. There are not too many of them left on the road, and it would be sad to see that number go down by one more due to a restomod project. I have owned four 6.3s so I appreciate what special cars they are. If you really get an itch to use that SLS motor, why not find a W109 with a 4.5 engine you can put it in? These are much less interesting cars, and other than the drive train, are essentially identical to the 6.3.

Hi Jay, your collection is awesome. Keep the cars original as possible to the period, they are art. Painting a modern day dress on the Mona Lisa just doesn't work. And since this video asked for feedback: I love the shows where talk about challenges and problems with certain restorations because they show mechanics and engineers solving problems. That's where all of the real education happens. I like the idea of kids seeing Version 22 of the steam engine manifold your shop built, and taking away the lesson that sometimes they just have to keep doing something wrong and stick with it until they manage to do it right.

panzerfaulst12345 You should keep it as original as possible. If your going to change the motor find a Ford supercharged V6 or something, but keep the 6cyl thing going, especially if it has the 6 emblems on the side of the fenders. Upgrade your brakes, tires, and suspension, and keep the rest looking stock, and you have the perfect sleeper, very cool these days. My mom drove a 67 mudstain 6 cyl car for about 20 years, 3spd on the floor. Main issues that bothered me, was the firewall, the pedals, and the drum brakes. No power steering

My grandfather had an Mercedes SEL just like that, not the 6.3, but it was great. He lived in La Crescenta, California, and the car was a real garage queen. Barely drove it, when the early 2000s came around, it just became really far-gone. Hopefully, I can get the resources to afford, and fix up an old W108 like my grandfather's. They are lovely cars. I'd like to see this 6.3 with the original motor and drivetrain. Maybe put the SLS motor in that W210 E-Class! Also, maybe do a road test of that 300SL gullwing?!?!?!?

Mr Leno , i am from Australia and here we buy from the internet a smokeless engine oil sold under the name go green .this oil is fantastic with absolutely no visible smoke from the tail pipe , after a few hundred miles the tailpipe outlet on one particular Mitsubishi v6 passenger car I did , was dripping oil droplets onto the ground overnight , required , regular top ups , due to vast intake valve guide clearance , but did not puff one whisp of smoke ever again .this go green oil is colourless and the real deal . and as for the glorious 6.3 , not many cars get to be guineas record holders , so let it stay factory correct . One of our Aussie 4 door production falcons named the XY GTHO Phase 3 took the record off your Benz and held that same record for the next 15 years straight . you will surely find something crazy small to squeeze the SLS powertrain into .

On the Mercedes... If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Better to have the stock engine and keep it classic. That Panhard with the sleeve valves, though? Pull the engine and fix it up for static display, but put another engine in it to run with. You're not running a museum, and I'm a firm believer that if you can't take it out on the road and wow the guys in the burger joint parking lot, a classic car is worthless.
@larryfontenot901810 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks. I was thinking in terms of taking the Panhard to classic car shows, where you'd want the original engine on display too. You could have a stand next to it for the engine, which I've seen done with other cars where the motor was too valuable as an antique to actually run.
@bubarowe10 жыл бұрын
One way or another I'd love to see that Panhard out on the road. I saw one in the Le Mans museum and even though it's a little battered found it one of the most striking and interesting cars there. Surely there must be some sort of "after burner"/hybrid, modern, in exhaust thingy someone boffin like has come up with that could deal with the smoking issue?

Re: your sleeve valve engine. The most advanced sleeve valve engine was the Bristol Centaurus, used in the British Sea Fury aircraft. Apparently, Bristol Centaurus developed a specific oil that reduced or nearly eliminated smoke after warmup, and improved reliability of the sleeves. It might be wise to contact someone that maintains the remaining Sea Fury aircraft for more information on that specific type of oil. I know that Vintage V-12s (rebuilds aircraft engines) has rebuilt at least a few of those engines, so they may be a source of information on it. I doubt that anyone is still watching this thread, but just in case they do....

In re: 1972 630 SEL Mercedes: I have owned several Mercedes with that body style, all diesel, and have never lost my enthusiasm for those of that style, up to about 1982. I vote to leave it original-145 mph is enough for a gorgeous 4-door like that. My long-time Mercedes mechanic, Kaarlo Poikonen of 'Walnut Creek and Lafayette, who had degrees in engineering from a university in Finland and the Mercedes school, and who traveled the US for Mercedes solving problems for dealers that they were unable to deal with, finally lost his enthusiasm for the "modern" Mercedes product, and bought twoToyota Land Cruisers. He has restored several Mercedes including Hermann Goehring's command car. which he bought in Germany and shipped to the US for restoration. The point is that he knows more about Mercedes than anyone I know, and I have confidence in his opinions. He is also a fan of the older, square body style cars, and I'm sure would offer the same opinion as I have.

As for the Mercedes; i say keep it stock. it looks like you already have both verisons of the SLS in your garage. changing something like the engine is going to change how the car is balanced, the suspension loads, how the body rolls, power to break ratios, how it sounds, and how it feels. production cars are designed to work with very specific sets of parts with no serious modifications. It wouldn't be a real 300 sel with the new engine.

" He was a real enthusiast who could afford to indulge his passion". Where have I heard that before??? I really enjoy seeing Jay's vids and the way he shares the collection and knowledge. I would keep the Merc as is, it has done a lot and can do a lot more.

Id skip on the Mercedes and just keep it as it is, or maybe do a small tune up along with polishing and working on the head a bit but keep it pretty much stock otherwise since its been running that long without any problems so far. It was made to be a cruising machine not a burnout car or sports car for that matter even if it has the potential too be both of those, if you find one in poor condition it would be a better idea though to really do something original with it like you did on the lotus elan you showed a while ago.

Jay leave the original engine in there. You can find another vehicle for that modern Merc. :) it made it 326k... it would be a shame to separate it now. Would love to see how your team creates a unique part using software & computer system(?) and then uses the 3D printer to create a part that then becomes a unique piece. EG: The intake on the Rolls Royce engine.

Of all the cars you own Jay, the Cuningham is the car that stops my heart and takes my breath away. The dashboard looks like the american Astin Martin. I would drive it everywhere or make replicas to sell.

MrGtownjake I know, and so were the printers.
@JasonWW20009 жыл бұрын
We can do that now. The parts are printed in plastic, but if you need metal then you use the plastic version to make a mold and have it cast in metal.

Don't take the engine out of the Mercedes. Leave that one as is, and try to find another one to put that new engine in.
@GeorgiGeorgiev-ne9ps10 жыл бұрын
Please Jay, do not restomad the Mercedes, keep it as it is. Because its so many miles, and you seemed to be so exited to realise it runs so strong for 324K+ miles, plus Its been you "best of" Mercedes car since you've been kid. On the other side It's also a good idea to give a new life to that SEL, but you may take a 190 or something a little older like the old SL and put the new engine it. Keep all of your Mercedeses stock :)

Another very interesting blog. It is great that the knowledge you are gaining and archiving would otherwise be lost. You will be lauded by future generations as much or more than you are today. This area of research has been neglected before you arrived with your natural curiosity. Can't thank you enough. You might want to check out the Nashes of the 1920's to compare their robust construction, bolt by bolt, with the competition of the time. Don't know if you have a Stearns Knight sleeve valve engine, but that construction versus other sleeve valve engines would be interesting. If a sleeve valve engine were to be built today with modern tolerances and materials, the smoking problem might be minimized, and it used to be said that sleeve valved engines improved over time as carbon deposits accumulated in them. They are complex engines, and can't help but wonder what the advantage was to build them in the first place. Great job, Jay, on the new field of research that you created that should be dubbed, "Lenology", and the fact that you are publicizing your findings is appreciated..

Keep the Mercedes stock, please. It is an amazing car and it deserves the dignity of remaining as it was originally designed.
@johncarder81910 жыл бұрын
Keep it stock. The fact that the original motor is still strong is a testament to its quality. This was one of your youthful dreams. Why not realize that dream? You already have lots of fast cars, so making it faster does not make a lot of sense.

I have recently taken an interest in your videos and I really enjoy them. After some time of having some 24 vehicles I've had a variety of different ones which don't compare to what you have, of course. My first experiences were with my dad who was a mechanic, my bro-n-law and friends, doing all sorts of auto work. Now I don't do my own work like I used to, but I still love cars and the many types that are out there. Thanks for your instructive videos which have interesting stories with them.

"Leave the Merc alone!".. But seriously, since the original motor runs strong and smooth, it then belongs to that car. You take that off and it's a hollow shell without a soul.

The Panhard and the Cunningham are great examples of what I like most about your show. I get to see and learn all about cars I would otherwise never hear of. A big THANK YOU to everyone there. My father sold Mercedes Benz in Monterey in the mid sixties. He even made that my middle name. My vote is keep the 6.3 as is,. Jeff Mak
