Jay Slater search called off by Tenerife police | BBC News

The search for British teenager Jay Slater, missing in Tenerife, has been called off, police have said.
“The search operation is over. Yesterday was the final day of the search," Tenerife's Guardia Civil told the BBC.
The 19-year-old from Lancashire, England, has been missing since 17 June, after he told a friend he was lost in the mountains.
Police carried out a new search on Saturday with the help of dozens of emergency workers near the village of Masca, in the Rural de Teno national park.

I was in Tenerife two days ago and asked a local what he thought about the case. He told me it was weird because people did not disappear like that on the island and that given the scale of the research operation, had Jay been in the area dead, wounded or alive, he would have been found. It is true that the island, especially the southern part, is rocky, arid and very, very hot under the sun. However, being such a touristy place, there are cars, tour-operator buses and people (including the Guardia Civil) all over the place, on any road from dawn to dusk making it easy for anyone to hail a car and ask for help if needed. There are actually tourists going and checkinig the rental house where he was last seen and some operators include it in their tour of the island... They had a massive search yesterday in the area where he last used his phone (very weird they did not locate his chip (they do it with terrorists even with their phones off!), it was in the local newspaper yesterday.
