First off the engine is a V6 and nobody who calls themselves a real supercar petrolhead cares for that kind of engines in supercars, not even in the Ford GT. Worst of all it is a turbocharged engine. Second it doesnt have a manual option. Third it is a heavy car. Fourth the back of the car looks like a regular car. Fifth the interior looks generic. And last it is not a limited production car. Thats why prices will decrease in the forseable future.

@JayEmm@Friends, I love Maserati’s and own the “final” GTS which I purchased new four years ago. The main reason for the brand’s infamous depreciation curve is their sales and after-sales experience. Like the NSX, they will sell you a £300k car but treat you no different than a customer who’s purchased a £30k car. The fact that Maserati’s are sold alongside Alfas in the same showroom says it all (Ferrari never made this mistake).

I tried different sound solutions on mine: Novitec (turbo-back, Capristo and Custom. Ended up with Capristo GPF (deleted) emulator cat connected to factory cat and custom 3--->5 inch Megaphones to the tail pipe with an interesting result. No more turbo boost re-circulation sounds at full throttle (with the exception of a whisper at times) due to significantly less restriction by the GPF delete and megaphones causing the gas volume exchange rate in the engine to use up all the boosted air from the turbos and beg for more. No- tune water meth injection in this car also significantly helps it because of the high Turbo boost values and extra-capable combustion efficiency of the Twin spark/ twin chamber at high revs: a victory for improved volumetric engine efficiency (I estimate 645 HP and 550 ft lbs improvement which can be felt) But now the exhaust note is just louder and the whistles are gone (which I do not miss). With this set up, I best enjoy driving it in sport-automatic-medium suspension. Medium suspension because while the soft setting is better on undulations at low speed, going fast at this setting make it pogo, wallow and impart the sensation of bottoming out. At Medium, the jitteriness at slow speeds disappears at high speeds and becomes compliant while limiting travel. I am learning to keep the go pedal closer to the boost explosion threshold for more speed drama. Pedal to the metal through all shift points invokes more 'jail time' rapidity but if not followed through, it does produce a unique mechanical 'rev-hang whirr' that i hear very clearly now that the whooshes are gone and this sound is complex in character and quite exhilarating. I am also acquiring appreciation for the low to medium rpm diesel truck bass roar and perfectly commensurate high torque and instant lag-free shove at low speed throttle stabs.The wide twin double wishbone suspension regulated stance really establishes a high speed turn confidence which does not bore because Dallara also engineered a High lateral G shove sensation for the enthusiast's pleasure: something I cannot say for the soft spongy but better track performing Ferrari GTB (which I test drove-excellent car).

Clearly, the MCXtrema proves these engines can make 700+hp quite easily. The MC20 GT2 and MCXtrema get the larger Garrett turbos which are supposedly good for 800+hp, but I don't think anybody knows the limits of the stock internals yet.

The base structure of this 90 degree v6 is incredibly similar to the late 60s designed V6 for the Citroen SM and Maserati Merak. That engine was raced at lemans in 73 and 74 in the Ligier JS2. In 74 it finished 8th overall. The Maserati engine it ran was an experimental 4 valve 90 degree v6 (Merak engine but with 4 valve heads) making 400hp at almost 11,000rpm. Alfieri was a genius.
@flyingphoenix1132 ай бұрын
I've seen the prototype Formula 2 version of that engine (still sitting in a farmhouse in Emilia Romagna) which has individual exhaust ports for each valve for maximal scavenging. It therefore has six tiny headers per side of the block and looks like a tiny V12 to the untrained eye!
@Selmerpilot2 ай бұрын
@@flyingphoenix113 That is fabulous! I have seen photos of that 4 valve engine. The 4v version finished 8th overall at Lemans in 74 and won the tour de france outright. It was a great engine but ran very hot. Maserati made maybe a dozen or so. The final engine they made was never picked up by Ligier in 75 due to the oil crisis, so it still sits as-new with the owner in western France who obtained it from Maserati. I would love to acquire one if that owner in Emilia Romagna is willing to part with it. Is it with the Panini family in their museum?

James having a meltdown on Ant's preference of more front splitter for MC20 is just hilarious. Also, James' patent-pending three-point hillstart torture test is important, not just to assess car's ability to be controlled by the means of throttle, gearbox, clutch, brakes and visibility, but also the driver's capability of controlling said cars. Driving test should include that, I think. BTW about the NSX, there's this Thermal Orange Pearl NSX at AutoTrader listed for GBP250k. I think people started to realize just how good it is and how ahead of its time the NSX is. And maybe because we know there will be nothing else like it from Honda in the future. Also that Thermal Orange Pearl looks stunning.
@sportzntouring2 ай бұрын
Yeah, although in the case of many modern cars, like this, you've got no manual handbrake and, no clutch pedal, so you're entirely reliant on the hillstart assist software to electronically manage both on a hillstart. You've just got to solve the problem with more throttle.

Enjoying this series!! Will be interesting to see what Ant buys. Been looking at similar cars - 720s is amazingly appealing and outstanding in so many ways but a bargain because of the McLaren issues, MC20 is unfortunately ruined by the sound, 458 was let down by the steering and brakes, 488 seems sensible but haven't driven, Exige 410 was everything I want from a car but the ground clearance might bother me and then road cars that wouldn't work on track but have glorious engines: V12 vantage, F12 or R8 V10 plus from the 2016 era. A year ago went from a 991 GT3 to a 992 Turbo S as I had a baby on the way, launch control seduced me and I thought it would cover all bases. It has and on Cup2s actually destroyed many average driven 992 GT3s on track. But the sound or lack there of has left a big hole in my heart! 😪

I've always liked to keep things standard myself. I remember having a Triumph T595 Daytona many years ago and it seemed every owner had done something to modify it in one way or another (most commonly the exhaust). I get what you mean about the interior -- it's not what you might expect from such an exotic marque. In the 80's, my father had a Maserati Merak, in metallic red with silver Campagnolo wheels and a crazy gold velour/half-leather interior. It's certainly a very beautiful car, it's just a shame about the lack of engine noise and interior quality that doesn't quite meet expectations considering the price. I would certainly consider the 488 to be a safer purchase currently, with reference to depreciation, as MC20 will most likely continue to lose a higher % of value in comparison. So i have committed myself to daily one of these provided i inherit a good portion of cash and just keep it for as long as possible, ( and as i sit right now its a possibility but unlikely, im a realist) I like these because i dislike supercars, they just aint for me, but this, i feel is one of those "Rare but nobody cares" types, its sweet, its not obnoxious like many and its so simple on the inside, just a display, few buttons and thats it, people grunt at you if you have a car of this caliber with practically any other badge, and it just wants to stay out the way, there are better exotic cars out there, the rich likely call themselves poor if they owned one of these as it does not go out its way to peacock in any other way other than the doors, it does not even have a wing so a GT86 would get more attraction around the town. Back in 2021 i passed a dealership with one of these just outside on the forecourt, it was a yellow (or orange) and yes it was a miserable rainy day, i had no idea what it was at first, and my first thought was "Nobody is going to buy you im afraid" and tbh that made me feel kinda sad, because thats the reality, so few people would buy it regardless of status, everyone else would be looking at other things, so if i got the chance, i would, i would keep it around like a good dog, because to me i likely dont deserve to own a car of that caliber, and i doubt it will get any owner that will keep one on the road for the lifetime i have left, but im a man of my word and i would show it to the world because i doubt anyone else would.

I'd love one, having said that being a hardcore Italian car fan, this suffers from the "296" syndrome, where many are sitting unsold - because of the V6 engine. Perhaps the MC20 is a modern day Jaguar XJ220 - the engines lack of theatre just lets the car down

The Jag promised but didn't deliver. The MC20 in my eyes is a Guilia engine in a supermodel's body.

The Alfa Romeo 33 is built with the same chassis from the MC20.

What’s not to like May be the price❤

They priced this car WAY too high. The NSX wasn't really at the time but the problem with that was it didn't look like an NSX.

He says it's the same price as a 488, but the difference is that car will go up and value and this one will keep sinking like a stone

Imagine they just TT the old V8 kept some of that sound with 700+ bhp 👌

The NSX should've always cost around 100k-125k. It never became cheap in Europe and despite driving Honda's, I'm not paying 200k for an NSX.

How does the MC20 compare to the 488 GTB?
@sportzntouring2 ай бұрын
That's potentially a good video. They're very different. I suppose if you watch the 488 video we did, you could contrast the different strengths and weaknesses highlighted?

200k€ for a 20k€ interior with no sound and not practible as a daily driver. Great job, well done.

shame that it weighs a lot for such a size and carbon tub :/

That is an interesting comparison, Italian NSX. I think that's spot on. The exterior looks I think is really good. I saw the MC20 at a Ferrari Club event 2 years ago and it got a lot of attention at a Ferrari event. It's a good looking car. It wasn't particularly fast at a Ferrari club event, but it wasn't slow. In the right color, it looks really really nice. The sound as you can hear on the video was underwhelming, but would probably be fine with an aftermarket exhaust. If they had paid attention to the exhaust more, they would have been more successful. But that's Maserati isn't it. They get 7/10 of it right but that last 3/10 is what hurts their sales. As a post script, I like how your Pakistani friend didn't bite on your anti-American comment when you called us dim-witted.

I'm not Pakistani. I'm British with mixed African-Caribbean/White-Australian heritage. You could have just refered to me as "James's friend" since there was only one friend in the video and there was no reason to bring perceived ethnicity into the matter.
