Spent 10 days with the regular petrol 508 GT as a courtesy car and can confirm it is a lovely thing. 225bhp, 8 speed auto and all the toys (including nappa leather seats). It steered nicely and rode beautifully, feeling firm yet compliant and very stable. At around £25k less, I think it’s a much better bet, although I saw a PSE on the road the other day and it was an event! Buy one second hand for pennies and have a super-rare left-field future classic.

I really, really like this car (its gorgeous to look at, the interior is cool looking and its just interesting compared to the Germans) but I can see no reason to buy it over an M340i, the Beamer sounds better, has a much better engine, probably a higher quality feel overall, is faster and costs near enough the same. Unless the BMW costs to much to run, its hard to justify the Peugeot (on paper at least)!

Peugeot have really nailed the cockpit over the last few years, and their designs are excellent. But you are right about the drivetrain, it just is not one thing or another. The need to look at how their French rivals are working wonders with the hybrid system. The Clio e-tech I hired in France is excellent. I'm not into hybrid especially plug ins, I wish it had 355HP with a 1.8 or 2L petrol engine and it had a manual option too. I also love big fuel tanks like the peugot 406, I think it's nearly at 80L because a full tank gets me return trips for some long journeys like Nairobi to Mombasa and back or Nairobi to Eldoret and back. These are easily 800-1200km journeys.
@zxspeccy48k2 жыл бұрын
I really enjoy your reviews Jay, but I feel you've missed the point on this one in so many ways. Yes, the fuel economy of any performance PHEV is rubbish when you're hooning it on petrol. In practice though, you'll find you do lots of very economical electric journeys, and then the occasional combined one that makes Greta cry. Overall it works out very well (I'm currently 82 mpg from factory). Imagine having a Prius daily and a Golf VR6 for weekends. No-one cares about the 23 mpg from the Golf. Most of these types of PHEV are going to be fleet/company car leases due to the tax breaks (low BIK). So while the cash price of the Peugeot is similar to the BMW M340i, the actual monthly cost is completely different. I think the M340i will be something like 3 times the BIK (lets say £200 vs. £600 for a higher rate tax payer). And that's the point really - you can get a >300bhp monster for less than a 2 litre diesel in real money terms. On that note, the better comparison is the 330e. It's not quite as powerful, but the drivetrain seems to make it quicker round the track (and more rewarding to drive IMHO). It, like the 508, also comes as AWD. Regarding the depreciation, since the BMW holds its value better, it actually seems to be cheaper on the lease. Also, the small fuel tank doesn't really matter - you charge it at home/work every day, so you add in 20-50 miles on that range 20-30 times a month. In practice you'll make fewer stops at the petrol station. Yes, driving from London to Edinburgh in one go will require an extra fuel stop - but being honest, you were going to stop anyway.

When they announced this, I thought it would be my perfect car. I like Peugeots, it looks stunning both inside and out, it's plenty quick, cheap to run and it's got a bit of weirdness that a French car needs. The lack of a proper manual mode would annoy me- if it's like other 508s I believe there is a manual mode, but you can't use it in sport mode. The range would be an issue too, although I can't imagine it really only gets low 30s on a run since people claim that for my 981CS and I get 47-48 consistently (then 20 when not on a run 😄). I'm definitely still going to be looking at one of these as well as the Volvo, not for my next car but the one after, if I can get a charging point installed.

Yeah it feels a bit hypocritical of Peugeot when their ads have a child asking their parents why all cars are either Black, Silver or White, and then they boast about how with Peugeots you get more vibrant colors, and you have to pay extra for those 3. Not as fast as golf R or GTI clubsport, but it is really capable. Brakes have great feel and stopping distance is great. Small steering wheel is not great for me. I am not quite comfortable with seating position and small steering wheel. I preferet a little bigger diameter round steering wheels that is not too thick or thin. These seats are not very breathable and they could use ventilation. Headlights are not matrix. Night vision function is good thing and it is not a gimmick. Car is expensive for what it does. I can't see that a 300 miles petrol range is a problem. We're meant to think that 300 miles is great for an electric car and they take 1/2 an hour to charge, (if you can find a charger). This car takes 5 minutes max to fill up with petrol. By the way, I drive a 3008 hybrid and if the battery is fully charged, in hybrid mode, I can driver for a couple of hours before the battery is flat. Just remember to use B on the gear selector (generation braking). You have to do a lot of long distance driving before the electric motors are a burden not an asset. This car won't be quite as good as that, because of the extra power, but it is fast and can still go to the shops electrically.

With some spirited driving 230 maybe. From a 3 pot! Kind of to be expected with the turbo coming on with the slightest engagement with the throttle. Overall fuel figures with daily driving over coming on 10k miles 44mpg low speed (60mph) motorway 36mg motorway standard 30mpg mixed driving, granny style 27mpg mixed normal 21-23mpg on the road driving how it wants to be driven.

One Prius (slightly worse fuel economy but bigger) and a BMW 340i (a but little bit heavier). One for the daily, one for fun... Also, the instant acceleration from the electric followed by the winding up of the turbo lump is pretty sweet.

Its sad that these new hybrid cars are so poor on fuel. For now i just keep driving my old 1997 Saab 9000 Aero 2.3T 317bhp which does 41mpg average over each week.

That’s amazing economy. I love older cars. I sell them. Shame most people just want new shiny things ( that are largely worse )

It has a very slippery shape the old 9000, a trick modern cars seemed to have missed. I miss Saab.

Come on, you'd have to be driving Miss Daisy to be averaging over 40mpg with 317hp.

@@alfamonk older straight six’s BMWs do do 36 ish. 41 pretty wild but high 30s miss Daisy is a thing. Otherwise it’s 28 driven normally

Love the Pug 508, I have the 508 SW First Edition puretech 1.6 turbo 225 bhp model in twilight blue with red leather. My lovely wife treated me to the full Maxton Design Body Kit, so its going to be one of a kind because there is only 24 First Edition models in the UK. I a few other trip bits that are going to go on the vehicle. Power wise its rapid in what ever mode you put it into, sport mode it really does pick up quick, it also has a bit of a twitch on the back end if the road surface it crap. The 508 is nice inside & out, it does turn heads where ever I go, I always caught many people giving it a second look.
