Hey James, I’ve had my 997.1 for 12 years with 162k on the clock now! And couldn’t part with my previous 911, a 993, which I’ve now had for 20 years. That one’s done 104k. Still use the 997 every day and love every minute :-)

+Ravid Fernandez This fits my Experience. These are quite reliable! I also 100% agree on this being the perfect first 911 to get. I don't know about the UK but here in Germany these are soooooo insanely common on the car marketplace and rather "cheap".I'm sure they will rise in Price but as of now, definitely worth getting. These are also very reliable so it's not one of those Cars you can buy "cheap" but then have insane maintenance costs. Though i must add that for obvious Reasons here in Germany Maintenance Costs are way cheaper than elsewhere, we got "Porsche-focused" Repair/Work Garages in almost every other Town. So if something goes wrong or something needs to be fixed/replaced, it usually isn't expensive and almost just like bringing your VW to a VW Workshop for work.

Did the DSC make a big difference before changing to coilovers and did you have PASM? I’m not sure if I should change the DSC with the current PASM and some lowering springs or just go for coilovers.

James, this is spot on. A couple of months ago I sold my much loved (and totally reliable) BMW 650i and bought a 997.1 manual. It's everything I imagined a Porsche should be, and I really can't imagine the new ones being any better. It's been to Center Gravity (yes that is the correct spelling, it's the best place to go for 911 setup and well worth the £350 or so it costs, you also get a full mechanical inspection) for a Geo setup and drives fantastically well. It's not better than my other 'fun' road car (a 1991 Honda NSX) but is very complimentary. It's so small and well proportioned for todays cramped roads and the drive train is so refined.. As a daily driver it's just about perfect. I use mine as a daily driver. £30 to replace the sticky ac switches and £140 to fit a bluetooth receiver and it's everything you need. Don't fuss about the bore scoring issues and just get one is my advice to anyone wondering. PS you can inspect the cam deviation data to see whether your IMS bearing is likely to fail, so it's not as much of an issue as people think. Also fitting a low temperature thermostat can reduce the risks apparently. (BMW 650i and then this, some say I like living dangerously!)

If the engine has an issue just bite the bullet and call up Vision Motorsports for a 4.0L stroker. When purchasing the car mentally set aside some funds for this eventuality and you’ll be happy when it comes time.

I've had my 2008 997.1 C2S for 3+ years and it's been excellent. They are cheap to look after if you use the extensive specialist network, and if you're inclined, they are easy to work on with advice from the thriving owner community including on YT. It also hasn't depreciated anywhere near the rate of everything else I've owned (recent used car market madness acknowledged)

Have had a 997.1 C4S for over 12 years now. Have put almost 100k miles on it. Love it to bits. I have driven the newer ones and to me, they are not worth the trade in, upgrade and price. The 997 still checks a lot of boxes for me and still exciting to drive every time I jump in to it and go for redline. With a few mods it can really dial in the sharpness and excitement even more. No plans to sell. It's a keeper. The early 997's are 17 years old now. Name any other car that is 17 years old, drives like this and some how will never need a possible engine refresh in the future. There are none. Point being, ALL cars will need some TLC at some point in their life if they are driven as designed and bring the owner great joy while doing it. Glad to see you give the 997 some love and respect. Keep up the good work .

Finally the 997.1 C2S gets some appreciation. Its the right size, great 6-speed gearbox, enough power and you can actually feel the road beneath you - price is stupidly low, better than ANY standard newer 911s. All it needs is a nice touch screen to bring it into 2022. (Owner for 13 years).

This doesn’t mean I don’t love cars - I loved all my cars & I love taking care of them. Something very satisfying about driving a great drivers car with 200,000 + miles. In all those years the only on road break down was my 1970, heavily modified & raced VW Beetle - My buddy and I were able to replace the blow engine with a replacement from a wrecked VW on a Saturday afternoon! That said I enjoy all your videos - Happy motoring.

@Matt77346
@Matt77346 Жыл бұрын
@@Breakchecks All of these cars were in manual. I had a PDK in a Panamera GTS and it was good but I prefer manual, its just more engaging for me. The 987.2 S with the MA1 engine is going to be more reliable overall IMO than either the 996 or 997.1 which may have rare but potential IMS or bore score issues. Neither of those issues should scare a buyer, really just need to take it into consideration and do a good inspection. The feel of the Cayman is "lighter" and more playful than the 911's and the 996/997 is more planted leaving a corner and arguably the better long distance cruiser. The sensation of speed is higher in the Cayman and it is more nimble/agile feeling. Honestly, it has the best actual driving experience out of the 3 IF you prefer a raw and more engaging drive. The 996 C4S is second only because it feels heavier and the 997.1 is third, because it is more refined than the 996 so not quite as raw, IMO. Hope this help!

I'm glad you mentioned bore scoring... There are some specialists who won't touch a 3.8 gen 1 997 because the bore scoring is almost inevitable. IMS is definitely overblown I think, although it's impossible to know if it will or will not happen on any given early car. Either way, I paid quite a bit more for a 997.2 C4S manual. I wanted a 2 but I couldn't find one with the spec and colour I wanted, so I settled for the 4. I'm told the .2 4s has a different 4 wheel drive system to the .1 and puts much less power to the front wheels on a routine basis, only shoving torque their way when needed. I have experienced such a situation when I managed to aquaplane my car... The car did sort it out but it took a moment and I was... concerned. Still, I'm glad of the safety net, and the car is immense fun. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't slightly disappointed with the overall performance, but I have a 1000cc motorcycle for that so nothing short of a McLaren would impress on 4 wheels. The porker has a different more subtle appeal; it worms it's way into your affections. I absolutely adore mine. I love the looks, I love the way it goes around corners, I love the interior, I love the smell, I love the way it makes me feel. I'm not so big on the maintenance costs, but I found a tame specialist who I really like and so it's not thrown me too many big bills (a/c condensers... ouch!) Great vid James, as always. You did get a bit lambasted on some porsche groups for your 997 turbo review, but there's no pleasing some people and it seems you've redeemed yourself with this. Say nice things about 997.1s and the internet 997 massive will love you.

This car has always been peak porsche in my opinion. I bought a 996 to restore because of price range, but early in the year I “met my hero” through a friend who owned one of these, in a similar color at that (also 40k miles). It was phenomenal as a package. The steering was vibrant with feeling, the engine sounded perfect fully stock, and the PASM was a super modern and helpful touch. It felt like a way more daily usable and faster version of my 996. That being said, I flew back home a few days later and hopped in my little 996 (granted with some track modifications), and I felt the exact opposite of buyers remorse. Nonetheless, I still wish I got more time in that car, and I hope to have one in the future to go along with my 996.

Own a 997.1 Targa, and I'm planning on buying a spare engine just to track the car and do other motorsport events. Easier for me to change a spare engine and rebuild them than replace a car that doesn't need improving. Markets will always fluctuate, and 911's will typically hold value and then spike with consumer interest -- so the best time to buy was yesterday, and second best time is now.

Meanwhile mum still drives her Toyota Corolla😅 prices are rising for these in Aus and we are all begging him not to sell it but he says he needs the money. Sad times. Great car, sounds mega and looks sexy on the road especially with the roof down 🤤

Interesting reflection. I had a 997.1 C2, sold it and after some testing (M3, C63, R8 V8) replaced it with a 991.2 C2. Everything was great so far. But after a season and some thinking, I had to admit to myself that I couldn't get the 997 out of my head. I then sold the 991 and bought another 997.1 C2. As we know, reselling is not a big problem, so the whole thing was relatively painless financially. What's more, this time I deliberately chose a 997 with almost no additional equipment, which underlines the pure character of this car. Any gadget too many is a disadvantage in this car. The "why": First of all - the 991 is certainly the better car because it is simply the more modern car. But from my point of view, which is that of a rather purist driver and will not apply to everyone, this also has disadvantages. The electromechanical steering in the 991, for example, is much smoother, but is no longer as fascinating as the old hydraulic steering in the 997, where you have the feeling of sitting in a kart that reads your directional wishes from your eyes. The interior is too annoying for me, I'm bombarded with information that doesn't interest me and distracts me from driving. Less is more here. The engine is quite cool, but at the end of the day it doesn't really have that much more steam, but lacks the free revving character of the naturally aspirated engine. The 997 simply has more drama. All in all, it is simple the more analogue, more involving, more entertaining car to drive. Also it’s predecessors are a tad to slow for my taste by todays standards. So to me at least this really is the sweetspot.

Hi James I have had a few air cooled 911 and a 996 C4S but my 997S.1 is far better and I have owned it for seven years and still enjoy driving it every time. In my opinion they are very cheap for what they are they and be used every day. They as docile as a VW Golf at low revs but drop a cog and stamp the loud pedal and it shifts with a perfect power to weight ration and as a normally aspirated car the linear power is so precise. They are not to expensive therefore a good buy because even if the car market fell they would only drop a little but either way in time they will definitely increase once they are appreciated for the car that they are. Thanks Tom

I have one daily driver, I wish I had the will to jump into an additional pleasuere vehicle, but that won‘t happen very soon. The daily driver was carefully selected after its predecessor was nearly driven to the ground by me. I intend to do it the same way with its current incarnation (so we are speaking 10 years+ of additional ownership, somewhere aiming at 300-500 thousond kilometres at the clock). I just hate to have to replace a perfectly working vehicle that I am taking care of with no good reason. I am currently single, it‘s a midsize estate that accomodates all the sports tools I use and could accomodate a small family, if the need arised.

I haven’t watched yet, but this is where I started. I still see it as one of the best versions without paying for a GT model. Edit: I did suffer an IMS bearing failure on my 3.8, but it was covered by an aftermarket warranty. Only paid the deductible on a $23k engine replacement and labor job.

How did that happen? Warranty on an IMS?
@brandonchism6960
@brandonchism6960 2 жыл бұрын
@@milchomarkov8158 great question. I bought my 2007 C2S in 2015 from a Porsche dealer. I asked for warranty options. Since the car was too old for Porsche certification, the dealership offered a third party warranty with varying levels of protection and lengths. I chose one with something like 4 years and 60k miles at over $4k plus the cost of the car. I considered it expensive, but I wasn’t going to buy a used 997.1 without a safety net. Less than 20k miles later, my engine grenaded. I made a claim, they launched an investigation, and ultimately paid for the replacement engine and labor. My mechanic changed my clutch as well for cost since he was already pulling the entire engine and trans.

Always wanted a Porsche but I must tell you, a good 911 of any vintage is way more expensive here in Australia than you lot pay. Nonetheless, I would have one if I could afford it. Have for many years thought a 997.2 would be the pick, for all the motor updates and more, we all know, they're particularly expensive here. Just lately I had thought the 997 may just have to do and they also currently represent value here. Your video JE, just absolutely confirms it. I've never commented my friend but have watched most of your posts. Thankyou. Keep up the good work !!.

I have uber wealthy friends. They now mainly purchase their Porsche & Ferraris from the UK and import them. They allege they save up to $AU150 - 180,000 ( $US100 - 150,000).

The one I’ve been waiting for! Lots of positive news on this! I’ve had my 997.1 c2S for just over a year now, I normally keep my cars for 1.5 years, sometimes regret moving them on so fast but always paves way for another opportunity to own a fantastic car, I Have been debating whether to switch up to a 997.1 turbo or a 991s, however I feel the power in the turbo would be alot for these UK roads without getting full enjoyment out of the car, where as the 997 you can thrash it and not end up doing crazy speeds so quickly and with the 991, the electronic steering thing people go on about and how the 997 is more engaging.. Everytime I look at it I can’t bring myself to move on.. however with 117k miles on it might be time to do so. Was a great watch and a well spent 20 minutes of my evening!👏🏼👍🏼

Had one from new for many years and drove it for 30k miles. I needed an engine rebuild and the gear box broke. Two cylinders scored bores. They are the ones that are under the radiator. Many people think it is a design fault and it should have been recalled but they did not. They corrected the fault in the 997.2. If you like the 997, i would suggest you go for the facelift although the 997.1 looks nicer I think.
