The 997 is also one of, if not the best overall 911 body style. It’s the sweet spot for size and classic v modern style.

Couldn't agree more. The 997.1 is truly sensational. It has everything you could want in a small, responsive and soulful package. A genuine, usable sports car. Interestingly, the 3.8S engine is more powerful than any GT3 engine (even the 992) up to 4,500rpm. And how much time do you spend above 4,500rpm on the road? And don't forget about the risk of the intake getting coked up with carbon on the DFI engines!

Porsche's own power curves that are supplied in the owner's manual for each car show the relative power outputs. An M97 3.8 with the large IMS bearing and rebuilt with Nikasil liners makes it as bullet proof as any engine, as long as you don't tune it for massive power.

I’ve never owned a Porch before. Is there anything I should know before buying one?
@neilanderson891
@neilanderson891 22 күн бұрын
@@718vox Yes, here's some things to consider: 997.2 cars and (later models) are widely considered better because the hot "IMS Bearing" issue wasn't put to bed until the 2009 997.2 Model Year. (The IMS bearing was prone to heating-up and failing, due to inadequate oil flow to it, which started in the 1999 model, which was the first water-cooled 911. Look for Hoovies' Garage on KZbin, or Porsche IMS.) That's why I think the 997.2 is absolutely better. Oh, I almost forgot - the 2009 997.2 also got the first PDK (Porsche's Double-Klutch automatic transmission) and I've heard they're great! However I've never driven one, because I only drive manual transmissions. I had a 2007 997.1 C4S with a 6-spd manual, but sold it at a $10,000 loss before the IMS even became a problem, about 7 years ago, around 2018. In 2020, while still looking for a 997.2, I ran across a 2013 991.1 C4S Ducktail, with a 7-spd manual. I jumped on it, and love it .... But I really don't appreciate the 7-spd because 7th gear hardly gets used, and I figure it weighs an extra 70-90lbs more than the old 6 spd. (I think that's why the GT3 doesn't get the 7-gear manual transmission.) So, I'm thinking I'll look for a 2009-to-2012, 997.2 C4S, or C4, because it's got the shorter wheel base and lighter gearbox. In February, I plan to sell my 1996 Arena Red C4S on the Bring-A-Trailer website in a No-Reserve Online Auction. It's often referred to as a 993, which was the new body style that broke away from the original "bug-eyed" 911 look. The 993-generation can be called a significant improvement over the previous 964-generation because of (1.) Hydraulic-Lifters, instead of Solid-Lifters, which are found in all later 911 that I know of. (2.) VarioRam Manifold induction (which starts with the 1996 Model Year, and would need diagrams to explain), which is found in all later 911 that I know of. (3.) Patented Rear Suspension which prevents 99% of the dreaded "Lift-Throttle-Oversteer" which is found in all later 911 that I know of.

This video by Basheer pretty much sealed the deal on my (new to me) 2006 997.1 C2S manual. This 911 is now my Goldilocks driver and shares space with my 2001 gated manual 360 Modena. I must have watched this about a dozen times, and can relate to all the subtleties that Basheer mentions about the 997.1 experience. Spot on mate. 2007 C2S 6 speed checking in with just over 100,000 mi and running like a top. Personally I like to keep it under 3,000 RPM until temperature is up to 200° f before romping on it to help minimize scoring issues. Otherwise the car is an absolute gem to drive for all the reasons listed. After the 997, the 911 platform really does start to get too big. The 997 gives you enough modern amenities that it's a comfortable car while still maintaining the raw purpose of a 911 sports car. My 2007 is specked with the 19 in Carrera Sport wheels, Bose, Sport Chrono, Sport steering wheel, etc along with a full exhaust and intake system upgrade. This is a forever car for me so I will slowly keep tinkering away and upgrading bits as I go making it a bit of a subtle sleeper. Cheers.

This will be a weekend car for me . I have other daily’s . My question: hope it’s not a dumb question, but is there a wrong or right way to warm these cars up? Some say don’t let it idle no more than 1-2 minutes. Others say start it and drive . Then I heard you can idle it until it meet its temperature. What do recommend? It s kind of confusing. Thank you and keep up the great work !

I had a couple of 997s years ago and liked them both. I did prefer the 3.6 as it did not have PASM, which to me was either too soft in high speed bends, or too stiff in sport. I like the power in the 3.8 but the IMSB (non-replaceable for all but the very early 997s) and the bore scoring issue now make these cars a non starter for me. I would get a 996, do the IMSB and enjoy it.

I understand your comments and love for this model if you are comparing to the later 991 and 992 versions . However if you want a TRULY engaging drive with a true experience with just the right addition of modern components. The answer to the best iteration of 911 has to be the 964 carrera 2 or R/S. It can be fixed temporarily by turning off and on the ignition several times until the stereo starts playing music. After that original start, the stereo works properly all day, even if I make several stops during the day. Have you ever experienced such problem? Any idea how to fix it? I've got the exactly same spec'd out one but Porsche Cayman S 987.1 version (manual of course). The finishing and everything is identical to your specs which include those sports seats plus, Sports Cronos pkg, PASM and Sports wheel. I consider these options to almost mandatory but sadly, it's not the case when ordered. You can find these specs more on 911 but not Caymans cause they're considered the poor man's version. However, for some unknown reason, my previous original owner spec'd it out to $88k Canadian in 2006. Which is like 911 pricing. The only complaint I have is mine has 59,000kms and if I keep driving it daily, it'll accelerate the depreciation. So I've put it into storage but I miss my drive like an old girlfriend. I do insure the car when I have something to do on the Porsche and start up the engine regularly. You are so right when you step on the throttle, even at neutral, I could feel the back of the car press down with it. No other car like it.

That’s a pretty unique cayman you have. The balance on the cayman is ready good, honestly do not worry about depreciation as you’re going to see much more value from driving your car rather than sitting like a queen in a garage. How long have you owned your car?
@josephlim8941

@@invictusporsche I picked it up in Sept 2022. Used it as my daily for a year, it’s in storage mode now. There’s a huge price gap between a low milage S (59,000 kms) like mine @ $40k CDN and a high milage (over 100,000 kms) @ $30k CDN. My suspicion is when it gets to over 100k kms, it tends to suffer from bore scoring. So I’ve put the brakes on the depreciation and danger of bore scoring. As time goes on, there will be less 987.1 cause most owners won’t rebuild the engine. It’s estimated to be about $30,000 CDN.

@@invictusporsche I’ve been driving the Boxster S 987.1 for the last 3 years in the US - a dream. It has the sports chrono and I find it totally not useful as it doesn’t even tell the time. Further, the fact that the design is very “rounded” / curvy around the gauge itself dates the car quite a bit compared to a clean dashboard without Sports Chrono. Further, I really enjoy driving but I’m not a pilot so I can’t really benefit from it. I can see how it makes sense for PDK cars for instance, where it changes the behavior ofthe ‘box (I think?), but for manual cars, a clean dashboard is definitely my preference.

Indirect fuel injection is "soul-less" - Huh??? Why is that??? What's your reason for denigrating later 911's??? Do you know why 997.2 cars are widely considered better? Obviously not. It's because the hot "IMS Bearing" issue wasn't put to bed until the 2009 997.2 Model Year. I had a '007 997.1 C4S with a 6-spd manual, but sold it at a $10,000 loss before the IMS even became a problem in 2014. Years later, ~in 2020, bought a '013 991.1 C4S Ducktail, with a 7-spd manual. But I don't appreciate the 7-spd because 7th gear hardly gets used, and I figure it weighs an extra 95lbs more than the old 6 spd. (I think that's why the GT3 doesn't get the 7-gear manual transmission.) So, I'm thinking I'll get a 2nd 911=> 2009-to-2012, 997.2 C4S, or C4, because it's got the shorter wheel base. Sorry Mate, there was just no convincing data provided.
