Let's not forget the last version of the gen 1 turbo 997 mezger derived engine was actually also used in the 997.2 3.6 GT2 RS with 620 Bhp and the most power full road going Porsche at the time.

The metzger also has the robust Nikasil treatment of the cyldinders that all 911's had up to the 993 but not the 996 M96 and M97 engine. Those have the Alusil treatment that has the resistance of butter, hence the infamous bore scoring and all the engine failures.

In order to facilitate the delicate production of Mezger cheese a sophisticated 'dry pump' system is used to distribute the raw cheese throughout the production vessel allowing for superior texture,, cheese life and cheese cooling. This makes for the smoothest, sleekest and driest cheese in the Northern Hemisphere

During the 1970 LeMans cheese shortage the Porsche team, even the tea ladies, were involved in hand producing Mezger cheese. This herculean effort propelled Mezger cheese into the hearts of the French earning them valuable contracts once French cheese production restarted following the shortage.

A couple of additional points -- 1) Dry sump engines usually make more hp than an equivalent wet-sump engine because they reduce the oil spray (mist?) In the case that causes drag on the crank like how riding a bicycle in the rain takes more work than riding in the rain. 2) As a derivative of the 962 engine via GT1 race car, the GT3 engine was still of the technical lineage of the Air-cooled 911 engine, just one where pretty much every part and assembly was incrementally changed over the decades from the original 2.0 liter air cooled 6. This is why you can still retrofit some of the GT3 engine parts onto an air-cooled 911 engine. The oil pump is one thing that comes to mind if my memory is correct. The 996 Carrera engine on the other hand is a completely new design that shares nothing with the air-cooled motor aside from the words "flat-six".

Can you clarify the "180 deg V12" rather than "boxer" comment?
@julianb14744 жыл бұрын
I got schooled in this after the previous upload of this video. The comment that the V12 was chosen for "packaging reasons" with no explanation as to what that meant was what caused some head scratching. For the difference in design, see wiki.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_engine It would seem that a V12 could be a little shorter. Because of shared journals the crank can be shorter and the cylinder offset reduced over a boxer design. I'd have thought the differences pretty small, but there you have it.
@andik.42354 жыл бұрын
@@julianb1474 And a shorter crankshaft is simpler to handle regarding bending, because it is stiffer because of the shorter length. So it can be build lighter and the engine is faster picking up revs. Ferrari Testarossa engines were also 180 ° V 12 engines.

@@JayEmmOnCars firing order difference?
@andik.42354 жыл бұрын
@@matteightytwo In firing order and with a Boxer configuration both opposite mounted pistons move outwards at the same time and move inwards at the same time. They have not a shared joint at the crankshaft like an 180 ° V engine. There one piston is moving out and the other one is moving in. And the vibration harmonics are quite different. A boxer for example has no first order oscillations.

MEzger is a type of cheese which does not use water in its production. Video over.
@beardmechanix16424 жыл бұрын
Also worth mentioning how the Mezger needed to be routinely rebuilt after hard driving of up to 40k miles. The Mezger engines also suffered cooling issues as well as bore scoring! My only hate when it comes to Porsche Fan Boys is the whole “Mezger” name dropping. However, the engines were far from perfect. In the 997, they show their age. It’s not a great match for such a great chassis. 997.2 were better all round road cars when the DFI engines were introduced.
@jeanpaulceulemans99734 жыл бұрын
total nonsense, the only thing better with the 997.2 DFI is the longer rod/stroke ratio, all the rest of the engine is less durable and less tunable, including the rods which were strengthened again in the 991 turbo. Some early 997.2 turbo engines even got stuck pistons due to the cylinders shrinking from residual tensions in the block. Porsche also recently dropped the Alusil for iron plasma spray coating but most engine builders still agree that the Nikasil of the GT1 derived engines is still the best in the business for wear resistance and temperature cycling. But even in the exceptional case of bore scoring, the wet liner can be replaced without any machining on the block When the cooling pipes are fixed, the 996/7 TT engines are almost indestructible
@beardmechanix16424 жыл бұрын
@@jeanpaulceulemans9973 nonsense? And what were the massive issues that problematic on the gen1 997 Mezger? Bore scoring and IMS Bearing failure! Sorry, defend the Mezger all you like, the DFI was a better engine for the 997!
@jeanpaulceulemans99734 жыл бұрын
@@beardmechanix1642 You have no clue about porsche engines whatsoever now do you? The problems you're talking about were with the open deck locasil engines in the Carreras/Boxters and these are totally unrelated to the TT/GT closed deck wet liner Mezgers which have no ball bearing on the IMS and nearly indestructible Nickel Silicon Carbide cylinder coating
@jeanpaulceulemans99734 жыл бұрын
@@beardmechanix1642 The first gen DFI 9A1 Alusils had casting stress that could lead to oval cylinders and catastrophic piston lockup Although much better than the M96 junk used in the Carreras they're not even close to the mezger in durability The second gen DFI 9A2 dropped the Alusil alloy and switched to a tougher alloy with iron plasma tranfer cylinder coating which is still inferior to the Mezger cylinders All serious engine rebuilders prefer the wet liner nikasil cylinders solution of the original Mezger engine
@beardmechanix16424 жыл бұрын
@@jeanpaulceulemans9973 this is the problem with Porsche fans! Slate a Mezger engine and be doomed for the rest of your life. Doesn’t matter what version of the engines were problematic! The more they evolved, the more issues came along. The engine was dated for the 997! The chassis’ were superb! DFI was better suited to the 997 chassis.

@@haydentakara4369 yup that's right only the c2 c4 mk1 and mk2 and also the 997's had IMS issues. But still i wonder who sat in the meeting and thought that this was a good idea.
