The L322 are very much the Range Rover du jour with Metcalfe and Clarkson constantly plugging them. The late Queen’s versions also nearly always had dual rear window controls on each rear door so she could open both rear windows for the dogs. Plus the seat belt ‘bong’ coded out to drive round Balmoral and Sandringham belt-free.

Clarkson and Metcalfe did a good job of pointing out just how practical these cars are. If you're willing to replace injectors that cost more than the car then it must be doing something right.

Had my 2005 l322 supercharged for 10 years and still enjoy driving it. Been pretty reliable. Other than servicing only had to replace suspension compressor and light check module. Was going to replace it a couple of years ago when rust started appearing round the rear arches. Bit the bullet and treated the car to a £3000 professional bodyshop repair. Still looks like new and saved £30,000 replacing it with a l405. Spent the £30,000 on a DB9 volante.

Got my 2011 4.4 tdv8 back in april, ive covered 11k miles in it since (now on 123k miles) - apart from an annoying dpf issue its been completely trouble free. Easily the best car ive ever had and always a joy to drive, even on our potholed country roads. Its also a distinct improvement in every area (apart from looks) on the 3.6 tdv8 i had a couple of years ago. Feels like a much better quality product, more refined and the adaptive dampers and gearbox really do make a difference. Averages 30-35mpg. These are gems

I own five of these, one of them just like the Queen's. When you can keep their electronics sorted out, I am repeatedly surprised at how well they can negotiate thin rural trails across uneven pastures, and then return you back home at the proverbial 'ton' on the highway:) With all their faults, when operating as intended, they turn out to be surprisingly comfortable and capable bits of kit. However, like the Queen did, I much regret the lend of the manual versions. (You know she drove, I believe, stick shift heavy ambulances during the War, what a magnificent monarch she was:)

I also have a dark green (beige interior) car first owned by royalty - His Highness The Aga Khan. The car is a RHD 2002 Audi A8L finished in Aga Khan Green. As well as having many exclusive touches, what sets the car apart from other D2 long-wheelbases is the fact that it's got a factory-fitted S8 engine installed. Possibly the only S8 engine installed into a LWB D2 by Audi themselves. The car cost over £90k in 2002 and the engine swap at birth cost over £12k alone.

Some years ago, I drove, and subsequently bought, a 1955 Humber Super Snipe. Prior to the gentleman I bought it from, it had had one previous owner; who bought it new to compete in the Monte Carlo Rally as a private entry. (Something one could do back then). After performing quite well, it was used by it owner daily from his home in Mayfair, London. I had been privileged to meet the original owner many times at shows and club meets. I think that was a lucky find, and it was certainly a lovely car. From the Monte Carlo to Mayfair _ quite a life. The owner in question? A gentleman by the name of Sir Stirling Moss.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that car and it’s L404 successor doing the regular run between Taplow Railway Station and Windsor Castle. Not widely known, Taplow was the stop used by the queen when she travelled by the royal train. Being presumably unable to get onto the Windsor and Eton line (or couldn’t be bothered), the Queen often alighted at Taplow then got the Range Rover to take her back to Windsor; no police escort, just the queen sat behind the driver and the car doing the short distance on its own.

Charming insights, thanks for sharing, I always liked that model, love Range Rovers but can't afford the reliability issues. I'm of an age that a lazy V8, auto, with bags of comfort would be a boon though. By and large I try to avoid special or rare cars that one is an out and out custodian of, takes the fun out of it (I've had one or two).I'm not sure that there are that many royalists these days though (maybe a museum will snap it up🤔🤔). I did once start to enquire about a Range Rover "classic", but it had a day bed arrangement in the back. Strange modification I thought to myself - all several years before the balloon went up - I made further enquiries, and found out the car had belonged to a certain Jimmy SaEvil (he was pretty pally with the royals too) I never liked the bloke, he had a vibe about him, so chose not to pursue the car further (even with offers of a refurbished back seat etc), as the vibe felt off. Then the balloon went up and my hunch was right about the car! Yuk, I dread to think!

Maybe it's different for JLR products now but when I worked for Landrover all Royal family cars had 2 identical cars and for 6 months of the year 1 was used the other 6 months the identical was used only difference registration plate so 1 car was always at Landrover the other with the queen. I certainly would have thought all servicing would be done by Landrover at the factory so presumably things may have changed and it was maintained by nearest Landrover. Facility as this car would have come directly from Landrover not through a dealer. I'm sure there is pictures of Prince Phillip driving a green L322 as he only gave up driving when he had the accident maybe 2 years before he passed away . So possibly driven this car. Unless grill at front has been changed but it will have had the small flashing blue lights attached behind the grill to show it's security etc royal family. Regarding Princess Diana's RS Turbo it was taken back after she had it a few years and was given a new reg plate and.it was not only the only black S1 RS Turbo it had the front grill of an Orion 1.6.i Ghia the security blue lights.fitted better to the Orion grill.

Oh, I have a story... about 3 years ago, I almost bought a 2012 L322 5.0L SC Autobiography with some fancy exhaust system, a carbon package (had carbon on the A pillars, side mirrors, and a few other places), and basically all the bells & whistles that you can potentially have on this car. It used to be owned by Slavi Trifonov, the most famous late-night talk show host here in Bulgaria... He's been in the business for maybe 30 years. Anyhow, the thing costed 14k euro at the time, and I didn't buy it in the end. First, because I read that those engines had issues with the chain tensioners that can lead to catastrophic failure. Second, because Range Rovers are notorious for frequent and expensive repairs. Instead, I bought a 2011 BMW 535ix (F10), it was about 2/3 the cost of the L322, thinking it be easier and cheaper to maintain because that's a very popular brand here, while Land Rover are fairly rare. Anyhow, in my 2.5 years of owning that thing, it left me stranded 3 times, two of which were catastrophic engine failures... After the second one, I ended up selling it with a broken engine because it had turned into an insane moneypit. Besides the big engine repair, I also needed to replace the rear springs, water pump (surprisingly expensive), alternator, valvetronic motor, serpentine belt, and a few other small bits... Overall, my supposedly safer choice costed me 11k euro to buy, I spent about 9-10k euro on fixes over 2.5 years and ended up selling it for 5.5k euro... Long story short - I don't learn from my mistakes, so these days I'm buying a 2008 L322 3.6 TDV8 :D

I cannot count the number of times I regret not buying it, though it would have been completely impractical and I would have needed a new huge garage to put it in. I often wonder who has it now....

The L322 Range Rover is possibly my favourite SUV of all time! Although I will say I much prefer the series 1 and series 2 cars, they just look better imo. Also, a suggestion, if you don't mind: please could you include more static shots or footage just showing the exterior of the car and the whole car? I love the videos as they are and I wouldn't change anything but it would be reeeaallly more nice if I could also just be able to look at the whole car in its entirety (for more than the current 20 or so seconds of cumulative footage/photos).

My dear James, you are looking at the digital dash from the wrong perspective. What you see as a weakness for owners is a big win for JLR. Instead of having to manufacture analogue dials in dfferent calibrations it makes more commercial sense to manufacture a single LCD screen that can do anything that a software update tells it to do.
@JohnBaxendale
@JohnBaxendale Жыл бұрын
Though, tbh, the way they actually made the digital dash there's very limited capability for modifying what's on screen. People have tried, but the actual dash pod is very limited. The middle screen can be hacked and there's 3rd party CarPlay/Android Auto options that can be added, but none will update that main screen unfortunately!
@ruk2023--
@ruk2023-- Жыл бұрын
I'm not thinking of hacking it like this but I'm sure the manufacturer can do anything they want.@@JohnBaxendale Better examples of what I mean are. 1. Instead of making two different physical products with KPH or MPH as the main unit they simply make one screen and tell it what is the primary unit. 2. Instead of making lots of different dials with different top speeds and rev limits for different JLR products they simply have to make one screen. 3. There's no process needed to build the analogue dials from needles and plastics and surrounds and controllers they just make one screen. 4. The logistics of shipping the right dials to the right factories and countries are simplified. They just send everyone a lot of screens to install. Overall the manufacturing process is greatly simplified which in turn will be cost less per unit to make. The benefits of going digital were for JLR not the customers who buy their products.
@JohnBaxendale
@JohnBaxendale Жыл бұрын
@@ruk2023--Yes, definitely, that's why most manufacturers have moved to digital displays and why manufacturers like Tesla have very "clean" interiors, it's not so much a design feature as a cost saving exercise. Arguably, touchscreens are less safe than gauges/buttons/switches - personally I dislike them and hope the trend ends soon.

Really good review. Pleasure to watch. I agree, in this instance, the prior ownership makes it very interesting. Also interesting to reflect on the changes of ownership the company was going through at that time. I think the company almost had a clearer vision of what they wanted the Range Rover to do - the big buttons were to aid functionality. It would be interesting to do a video where you track the changes through the generations.

I like the chunky dials. It's weird how people who review cars go on about stuff that in the real world you just get used to as a matter of driving the car over a period of time. I do agree about the screen/dash thing though - if it doesn't really do much over what dials do, then just give me some nice dials....

What would make that car more valuable is.. not because it was owned my the queen but also the fact it would of been maintained properly.. I never went to Dell Boy's garage for a oil change or any repairs.. IF that car had 500.000 miles on it. It would still be a good car.. NOTHING would of been overlooked at each service and I don't think the queen would of turned down a repair because it was to much or her friend Bob can do it cheaper..

I very seriously considered buying the 300 Mercedes Wagon owned by John Candy when he passed away, as verified by insurance cards and other documents. Main reason I passed was that I had no more spaces for cars in my driveway or street parking without selling something I didn't want to sell.

Nice story James. My first car was a British racing green MGA which I sold in order to buy an MGBGT which was owned by the Duke of Westminster. It was painted in Ford blue mink matching the Rolls Royce I am told. Interestingly the chap I sold the MGA to was the Bishop of Chester’s son who was a leftenant in the Royal Navy and he knew of the MGBGT which was apparently driven by Sally Grosvenor. I’ve tried searching for the MG but can’t locate it except that some heathen had repainted it black🙁 Well that’s my “Celebrity”? Story thanks again James.

I agree fully about the fact that the previous owner being totally irrelevant. Once an ordinary person gets into it and drives it around, then it is nothing more than just one more second-hand Range Rover with a rusty tow ball. Unless of course, it has some unusual feature that is not normally fitted. This particular vehicle also demonstrates that the Royal Household largely buy stock vehicles and do very little to them, if anything. I am sort of surprised that it doesn't have at least somewhere where the Royal Crest or flag would have been set when the late Queen was conducting engagements. Either that or they used some sort of magnet or other quick attachment device that could easily be swapped from vehicle to vehicle without any sort of permanent modification.

A real highlight of owning an L322 IS the chunky buttons, dials, knobs, and switches, all features coveted when you live in a winter environment of -20C to -50C, obviously an environment you do not live in, but I do. To inform you a little more, try touching a touch screen in -30C weather, with or without your glove on. Let me help you with this one: FAIL. Pressing a heated seat push/press button really makes sense now... yes? Ditto for climate controls, heated steering wheel, etc... Oh wait a second, your audience is UK-only based, yay? Nay?

I agree with this one - I believe Harry Metcalfe in a review of his L322 observed that the designers specifically made the buttons large enough so that they could be operated with gloves on. It is that sort of detail which I think underlies that the L322 was still somewhat linked to the original purpose of the Range Rover in being a luxurious workhorse. Later models are far more luxury limousine alternative to any form of workhorse - hence the fancier buttons in the L405!
