335,000 miles. That was the odometer reading on my ‘07 L322 Supercharged (US spec) when I sold it a couple of years ago. It ran wonderfully and didn’t need anything. I purchased it with 280,000 miles and she was a wonderful car. Plenty of room in the boot for the Great Dane, lots of power and incredibly comfortable, with true class. Thanks for a great video Iain!

I have an L322 2002 v8 petrrol with the "BMW gremlins" . I purchased it with no service history and errors on the dash galore . It was fixed with Ian's o ring in the air suspension and has been close to trouble free for over 2 years. It has done 225k KMS. I am in Australia so the car is completely rust free. Fantastic car to drive - love it !

I have a Java Black 53 plate so the earlier version with the M62 BMW V8. Only done 70K and like yourself can’t bring myself to part with it as it owes me nothing and as I use it so rarely it’s 0 depreciation. All the points you made, air suspension, ZF box overhaul, stereo etc but I’ve spent so little on it it’s actually part of me having owned 18 years . They’re just an awesome car and with so many breaking for spares now a doddle to maintain. Yay for L322s an appreciating classic along with my trio of Rover P6s.

I have also been following Harry's garage and Jeremy Clarkson's L322 so it was good to see another professional endorsing this slightly older Land Rover. We sold our old TD5 (which was brilliant by the way) a couple of years back thinking that was the end of our 4 x 4 needs but soon after we needed to tow a 2.2 ton boat so we looked at these 'later' Land Rovers. In the end (and quite by chance) someone offered us a Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 diesel which was dirt cheap. Since then we have been driving the Santa Fe here, there and everywhere, sometimes covering 500 miles per day and guess what, everything works, it starts on the button and it returns 40mpg. On a recent return trip from Cornwall we were cruising back along the M4 when we hit traffic. After a while we passed a Land Rover broken down on the outside lane - I think that says it all. I am expecting this Hyundai to dutifully do its job forever despite its recorded 144k miles. If only LR could make their vehicles more reliable. I won't buy another one... Land Rover that is 🙂
@iain_tyrrell
@iain_tyrrell 2 ай бұрын
The SantaFes do indeed have a good reputation, but I consider the foibles and glitches worth putting up with, because IMHO the L322 has spades of character. But I’m sure the Hyundai is in some ways the better car
@tardisaframe
@tardisaframe 2 ай бұрын
Hope your Hyundai performs better than the petrol version- you would be better off with a calendar to record time taken to 60mph rather than a stopwatch - I would also not even think about towing a 2.2 ton boat. I would certainly prefer the Range Rover

On my second L322, first supercharged now TDV8, both fantastic cars, both surprisingly reliable. Nothing eats miles like the l322 long distance. I miss my supercharged. They’re nowhere as good value in Australia though, but still worth the price of admission in my mind.

I bought one of these when it was 18 months old - was a lovely thing, went very well - supercharger whine always brought a smile to my face. I had the airpump replaced under warranty for the suspension and it was pretty much bullet proof afterwards. I used to daily mine into London - 9mpg! had it for a year and moved it on, lost a tonne of money - but didn't regret a penny!

I have the same car, but on givenry green. It now has 370 000kms only recently I had a big issue, transmission oil cooler. Since I live in rural Zululand in South Africa, no one wanted to touch it. I did it myself. I have changed radiator, some door cables, changed ignition stuff and do the servicing myself. I am not even a mechanic! I love it, it drinks petrol like crazy but we choose it again and again. I tow a lot of people who get stuck in the mud around the wetlands I live in. I enjoy it!

I've got an 07 4.2 SC (also in not-so-rare black of course)... I continue to be amazed at just how competent it is, from daily driver to towing heavy loads, and drinking lots of fuel! It's so impressive I'm being incredibly committed/silly and allowing it one big bill a year. Suspension in year 1, rear arches in year 2. I suspect it might be gearbox this year as it's just started hinting at being a bit odd. Still worth every penny invested.

The L322 is a wonderful vehicle! I read about many problems with them, but it seems that people buy them cheap, and run them without any servicing, then complain about problems, mine is a diesel V8 and here in the South of France I get over 30 MPG from it, due I am sure to temperature and a total lack of traffic, but they are very relaxing to drive, and I think re much better in many ways than the later models due to the later complex electronics, as for the radio/TV/DvD I have never turned mine on in 5 years as I really enjoy the total silence. Lovely, featuring one of your own treasures. With this 3rd gen L R did bring back the legendary appearance since it just had vanished too much with the P38A really; the latter looked really bland and anonymous. I remember the L322 very well but have never had the experience being in one or even driving it. The later L405 and newest L460 do look magnificent I have to say, however yes their sizes are quite meaty, be it rather disguised by their design. The L322 of all the more modern iterations actually has stayed more genuine in the spirit of the original as launched in 1970. In that it isn't a surprise perhaps that they are still well being fancied. Wonderful car and the V8 does sound glorious 💓

I’ve used mine as a daily driver for many years and apart from the fuel costs, it has been surprisingly cost effective. It would have to be something pretty special to get me to swap it. Oh! That was such a joy to see! It took me back to my G Reg Range Rover Original shape one! When the Engine got shall we say a bit long in the teeth! I went to Overfinch and got the 4.9 L engine put in it with suspension upgrades but kept it looking stock! I used to have some fun following Audi 2seater Sports cars and they could not believe this was keeping up with it and had a fantastic time driving down to France whilst bedding the Engine in and talking to the guys back at Overfinch! Such that ever hour roughly I would increase the revs by 500! Lets just say I went right through the rev range and it did a great top speed on a French Auto route back in the late 90'S 🤪😮🤭

The house just appeared in the Sunday Times yesterday at £3.5M or similar. I think of those top spec cars as “To the manor born” & softly spoken titles. All others, cash is required.

Brilliant love it Iain!! it was only a matter of time before we had the pleasure of your L322 SC on TCW. Most of us are accused of some kind of 'Stockholm Syndrome' when it comes to our love for our Range Rovers but I don't care, I simply do not care lol. I've had enough of them now to appreciate how good they are ( provided you've not bought an abused example...). Genuinely none of mine have ever let me down and I've always serviced regularly as per my LR specialists recommendations. Of course there are 'issues' and 'gremlins' from time to time, it is a car and stuff does fail mostly electrical as you point out. Its very important to buy one that's been well looked after. Deferred maintenance and owners who don't care for them will be a problem on any car..... particularly on Range Rovers, I'd conceed that! :) Like you I will never be without my L320 2010 RRS SC, its NOT going anywhere either Iain. Mine is immaculate and I intend to keep it this way. Its the most comfortable car I own and I prefer to drive it over many other exotics I have. I can assure you the 5.0L V8 Supercharged is more than enough and provides all the performance you'll ever need from a Range Rover. With the adaptive suspension and Brembo brakes these cars really hustle along and handle very well. Of course they are not sports cars but this is the car I choose to do long drives in ... they are simply sublime.

The L322 is peak Range Rover, in my opinion. Very very good looking and luxurious, but still utilitarian. I share similar sentiments about my 2010 LR4 (Disco4) 5.0L. It's the perfect daily driver for me and there are really no modern alternatives. The Defender would be the closest thing I suppose, but it doesn't have the fishbowl visibility nor the folding rear tailgate. Anyway, I think this generation of Land Rover - Range or Disco - are modern classics and deserve to be preserved!

I have had a 1998 4.0 P38 autobiography for 20 years, bought second hand for £10k, love it, pulled caravans, trailers, carried 4 kids and dog, used to transport furniture and also rubble to the tip. Now have a L322 4.4 TDI v8 as well, which is brilliant, but noticeably bigger around tight English country roads and a lot more complex to work on for the DIY home mechanic, but offers a brilliant all round compromise and does 30 + on a motorway. Buy the car you love and just fix it when it breaks, someone once said…. Couldn’t agree more.

A lovely car, I had one of these. Iain, not sure if your VIN L322 is subject to the Technical Service Bulletin like mine was. The wiring circuit for the supercharger cooling circuit water pump. From the factory, these were wired up with the wrong polarity! There wasn’t a recall, but LR would correct if the customer brought it in for attention following a “Reduced performance” warning. On a 35C day towing my 3T caravan, I got this warning. Anyway, it’s easy to DIY fix by simply reversing polarity on the pump wiring. Check online for the TSB and the VIN range affected before they figured out they could fix it on the production line. Good luck with your L322.

My old man had one of these.. He religiously had it maintained by the dealership ((who's name is eponymous with that of a pink fleshed, often smoked fish)) And they rewarded him by overcharging for absolutely worthless service. Among other things they powerwashed the car "to return it in top condition", which resulted in damaged seals, multiple lights getting absolutely fogged up and finally failing... And they also managed to (as Ian mentioned was a riisk) more or less soak the electronics in the "left rear pillar". Giving the car an never ending row of electrical gremlins.. And other small things like if they broke a clip or fastener they more often than not """fixed it""" using gaffer tape... So the car was full of the stuff...That car was an absolute mess...Very much thanks to the dealer

Great video, have the same car, but in Buckingham blue, it’s got a misted rear light, slight rust on one arch but still solid and scratches and currently a rumble that sound like wheel bearing but garage don’t think it is, still a great car and for its size and weight not bad on fuel especially on long runs. And same as you said if looked after are actually reliable, worse iv had was a seized rear caliper and £80 later and two new rear ones and couple of hours of my time it was sorted. Great cars and even though the 3.6 is better on fuel it has much more to go wrong so I think long term more expensive than the v8 petrols.

I've got a 60 plate Autobiography 4.2, one previous owner with all the extras including leather headling and wooden steering wheel (which I love). Now done 135k with no major issues at all, but you have to look after them. Got a queue of people wanting to buy it! PS the 5.0. are all petrol and ULEZ compliant which is one reason why they hold their value. A local dealer sold one recently for £25k with 50k and FSH.

Another enjoyable upload by Mr Tyrrell. My current car is an Audi Avant Quattro V6 turbo diesel but the poor condition of today's roads quite often knock my tracking out so my next conveyance will be a 4x4, possibly a Ford Ranger Wildtrak (diesel).

@@iain_tyrrell Definitely! The UK roads are atrocious right now. I can understand a private stretch like the one on the way to your building being less than perfect, but the general state of the roads in England and Wales is worse than I've ever seen it. I thought the US Midwest was bad when I lived there, but the UK is now right up there. Thanks for the reply.

been driving l322's for 15 years. basically, i need one for its practicality, and usefulness. but i often ask myself, if it disappeared, what car would i get after.. the answer is... another l322. there is no better car. some say they break down a lot. but there are a lot of them out there, so numbers might suggest they do... but its a thing that all cars do eventually. presently, there are a wealth of spare parts available to maintain these beasts very prudently. unlike many Japanese impersonations.

I’m old fashioned and do not require my conveyance to be a rolling computer. So a CD player is more than adequate while I’m out and about. A Harmon Kardon, cranked loud during a night drive is, I expect, hard to beat (Bose is more my level). I do confess to a navigational weakness, and the modern SatNav systems on many cars are a godsend. I’m sure you’re right that if you can connect your phone, a world of capabilities open up. But there is something very special about not being “always on”, which I think is going to be extraordinarily valued from time to time in the not so distant future.

This along with the Land Rover Disco3/LR3. After owning an LR3 for the last ten years I've just done regular maintenance and the only major expense was an air suspension rebuild. Great vehicles and the fear factor around them makes it affordable.

Lovely video Iain! I've owned several and make a business out of vintage Land Rover restoration in Montana. No doubt the 5.0L is in fact superior with respect to power and very slightly on economy, however in terms of mechanical reliability, the AJV8 in 4.4, or 4.2 Supercharged form as yours is, is far superior to the 5.0 with near zero timing chain/tensioner issues etc. I'd love to see you do a video on the classic Defender 90/110!! Thank you again Iain!

Can someone help me: I have a problem with my L322 4.2 2006 which, as it turns out, has affected many owners around the world but no one has found a solution. I'm talking about the harsh ride, as if the air suspension has turned off and is not working. The car drives as if on overinflated tires, feels every small cracks on the road, every bump, but at the same time it drives through sleeping policemens absolutely normally (at low speed). There are no errors in the system (there was one C1A07-62, but it was corrected by replacing the wiring on the height sensor), all the silent blocks and bushes are new and original, as are the shock absorbers, tires and everything that is possible. I found many topics on English, American and Russian forums with this problem that lead nowhere. If you understand what I mean or somehow solved it (it all started with the first cold weather in November, some also write that the suspension becomes soft again in wet weather, but it doesn’t affect me in any way) - write here. I know there are many of us! *Very reliable - they said...Not at all.
