Soldiers were listening to this song during the Vietnam war. It helped them cope with being there. They were stuck in a nightmare. It was like going to war in the Everglades in July. The bugs, heat and humidity alone would kill you. Now add in man eating snakes, alligators and machine gun fire 24/7.

Any of us who made it thru that hell-hole keep CCR close to our heart. When I hear them today, there's a strange melancholy for that time and I feel as if they belong to our generation. I know, selfish, but that's how it seems. "Have You Ever Seen the Rain", "Who'll Stop the Rain", and "Run Through the Jungle" can still bring a tear. To those who've seen the rain, 'Welcome Home, Brothers'. 589th Combat Engineers Song Pha RVN 1970.

From March 2, 1965 to November 2, 1968 the US military conducted a massive bombing campaign in Vietnam called Operation Rolling Thunder. "Over on the mountain Thunder Magic spoke" refers to fighter jets that weren't always seen or heard until they were over the peak of a mountain. That's when when the jets spoke. "Let the people hear my wisdom. Fill the land with smoke." Refers to the attack jets dropping bombs on a targeted area and the sound the bombs made when falling and the heavy smoke created afterwards. Durring Operation Rolling Thunder The Navy and Marine aircraft flew 152,399 attack sorties against North Vietnam, just short of the Air Force total of 153,784 attack sorties. In the 3.5 years of Operation Rolling Thunder 864,000 tons of American bombs had been dropped on North Vietnam.

One more thing; it's interesting that you picked up on "gun control". Per John Fogerty, he wrote this song about the rise of guns and gun violence on the streets of America, not the Vietnam war. But he acknowledged that the ongoing war had to have had some kind of influence on him, too. I think the song certainly speaks well to both situations, so it's fine to accept both ideas. ☮

Nam! Running for your life! You can imagine the desperation in their minds. War is hell. Great song and let us all be thankful for the sacrifices they endured. True warriors. 👍❤️🙏

Ever since this first came out it makes the hair on my arms stand up. Another gem off one of the greatest rock albums ever released: Cosmo’s Factory.

We used to play CCR a lot in Nam, we loved the anti-war protest songs... :-)

This song was the first I ever heard from them, still my favorite. 8-track of CCR, would play for hrs. and never got tired of it.

"Feels like Vietnam". This song has been used many times in movies just to stamp a date on a scene in a movie.

Growing up in that era. Hard. No ac in florida summers. Prepping to be drafted by practicing as boy scout. Waiting for that letter as soon as you hit 18. No internet or cellphones or ac.

I can't tell you how many hours I spent in the basement playing drums to CCR as a young teen. Thanks for keeping the good stuff alive, Cheers!

CCR had a lot of great songs, but this is by far my favorite. That swampy, dirty guitar is coupled with the most badass harmonica playing ever.

When I was a kid this song cut deep because I knew what the band was saying. The war was hard to get away from even as a child, watching footage each night on the news that showed the sick horrors of war and the politicians who kept sending over more and more young guys to die.
