Any of us who made it thru that hell-hole keep CCR close to our heart. When I hear them today, there's a strange melancholy for that time and I feel as if they belong to our generation. I know, selfish, but that's how it seems. "Have You Ever Seen the Rain", "Who'll Stop the Rain", and "Run Through the Jungle" can still bring a tear. From March 2, 1965 to November 2, 1968 the US military conducted a massive bombing campaign in Vietnam called Operation Rolling Thunder. "Over on the mountain Thunder Magic spoke" refers to fighter jets that weren't always seen or heard until they were over the peak of a mountain. That's when when the jets spoke. "Let the people hear my wisdom. Fill the land with smoke." Refers to the attack jets dropping bombs on a targeted area and the sound the bombs made when falling and the heavy smoke created afterwards. Durring Operation Rolling Thunder The Navy and Marine aircraft flew 152,399 attack sorties against North Vietnam, just short of the Air Force total of 153,784 attack sorties. In the 3.5 years of Operation Rolling Thunder 864,000 tons of American bombs had been dropped on North Vietnam.

One more thing; it's interesting that you picked up on "gun control". Per John Fogerty, he wrote this song about the rise of guns and gun violence on the streets of America, not the Vietnam war. But he acknowledged that the ongoing war had to have had some kind of influence on him, too. I think the song certainly speaks well to both situations, so it's fine to accept both ideas. ☮
