Her voice is a perfect example of an Irish lilt I think it has something to do with the Irish accent. That yodeling is known as keening an Irish wailing often used during funerals as a form of grieving. The best example of this you can see is U2 live at Slane Castle (2001), the bridge between the songs All I want is you and Where the streets have no name when Bono begins keening for his father who's funeral he had attended earlier that day before the concert

I think I’m doomed to discover people after they’re gone. My parents were ultra conservative and I knew of the Cranberries and heard some of their songs, but I didn’t appreciate their talent because I was too busy dealing with all the abuse. George Carlin was another one who I rediscovered literally the day he passed. I wish I’d seen them both live.

So glad you see you react to this song. I've always liked the Cranberries, but this song is probably my favorite song of theirs. It's just so beautiful. Delores O'Riordan (may she rest in peace) harmonizes with her own beautiful voice throughout the song. That "yodeling " she does is called "keening..." It's like an Irish form of yodeling. This song nearly always brings a tear to my eyes when I hear it.

Love The Cranberries, and Dolores' vocals, including the great harmonies she layers her lead vocals with - that's as much a part of their sound as the keening. IMHO, the Cranberries were as much as part of the 90's sound as Nirvana and all the grunge bands, who were phenomenal. One of the other big female led alt-rock band of the 90's was The Sundays, whose lead singer is Harriet Wheeler. You should hit them too. Start with "Here's Where the Story Ends". After that, we'll have to hook you up with The Breeders and Belly, as long as we're talking great 90's bands with female leads. Thanks for listening and keeping great music alive! Peace from SF

Howdy hi hi Janel! Oh, yeah, I fell in love with her voice the first time I heard it as well. On the day she died, she was set to revise her lyrics for the song zombie with the group Bad Wolves. They went ahead and released the song and gave all the proceeds to her children. That woman knew some real heart break in her life. And I think that's what we hear in her voice as she belts out these hauntingly beautiful pieces.

You will hear that same sound from many Irish artist. In particularly those from the west coast of Ireland where Dolores was from Limerick. There’s a traditional type of music called Sean-nós (old Style) in that tradition they have a sound call Keening it’s a lament conveying deep loss.
