Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan wrote the music for this song before Dolores O'Riordan joined the band. Originally, it had lyrics written by the group's first singer, a bloke named Niall Quinn. Zombie is among the all-time classic rock songs, because Delores realised that her fragile voice couldn't compete with all the American grunge that dominated the airwaves at the time. This woman means more to my ancestral nation than anyone in my birth nation will ever mean to anyone in this place. I've watched, as a bartender in the US, the HARDEST OF THE HARD Irishman pour tears to hear this song... And thats not even talking about what happens to my lost cousins when they hear Zombie. There is ALOT of hurt that needs to be healed in that nation... and NO ONE cares after the bombs stopped. Its as sad as any American story. The story of a used people that bought into the dream, put their souls behind it, and still found nothing but war that no one would let them escape from... over religion and the right to just be. Its a more common American story than they let any of us understand.
