Rory was around well before AC⚡DC... and always gave 110% when playing on stage. Some of rock’s most seminal figures, from Jimi Hendrix to Slash, from Brian May (Queen) to Johnny Marr (The Smiths), have cited him as an influence, as have many many more. Rory remains a touchstone for all would-be guitar heroes in the 21st Century. Truly a musicians musician ✊ Should check out Rory's first band "Taste" -- Taste ~ Sugar Mama (Live at the Isle Of Wight Festival, 1970) .

He and his band/sound are and always will be from a different time ... when people cared about musicianship and Quality in front of an audience. He was a truly amazing guitarist, showman and seemed to love being there with his audience; I loved that ...
@1Moonchild2 жыл бұрын
This Montreux show in 1979 was epic. After giving 1000% with this song, he still came out and played two encores. You might also want to check out how he opened this particular show with Shin Kicker, it'll speak for itself. BTW, Rory started quite a few years before ACDC, but that duck walk is Chuck Berry's classic move. Rory's acoustic stuff is just as amazing as his electric - Out on The Western Plain, Barley and Grape Rag, Too Much Alcohol, but my favorite acoustic performance of his is Just The Smile from the Beat Club Sessions, which sadly has been removed from YT. There's also a version of If The River Was Whiskey, performed on a Dutch show which is beautifully interacted with the audience and definitely worth seeing. Anyway, THANKS Jamel for taking the Rory ride, there's nothing else like it. Please, keep on...

He was absolutely on fire that night. right from the first song - Shinkicker- to this incredible finale. Then he came back for two encores! In between the high energy rockers, he also played some soulful slow blues - Off The Handle is intense, and some acoustic - his brilliant interpretation of Leadbelly's Out On The Western Plain. I love the energy, fun and entertainment of this performance, but my favourite version is the one from the Belfast '84 show - the lyrics are clear, the audience participation is great, and Rory starts strong, slows it down in the middle, then delivers a blistering finale - busted strings, stage invasion and all! Magic! Thanks for another Rory Classic, keep 'em coming 👍

Has to be the Irish Tour '74 one, and for once, I'd recommend the live audio from the album. Saw Rory multiple times between '76 & '92...every damn show the guy just put everything into it...it was who he was & what he did... Add On - the club gigs were the best. He tore it up at the big gigs - usually opening - but the club headline shows were off the charts. The last time he came to the West Coast I went to three shows in four days - the last on St. Patrick's Day.

Rory got his start back in the 60's, with a band called Taste. By the time AC/DC was formed, Rory was on his fourth or fifth solo album. My introduction to him was via the album "Tattoo", which is the fifth solo album, released in 73. There was a small local radio station where I grew up, my friends worked there, then I did 75-76. There was a promo copy of "Tattoo" at the station. I now have about 14 of his albums on CD. One of my great regrets is having never gotten the chance to see him live. FYI, the studio version of this song, "Shadow Play", is on the "Photo-Finish" album from 1978. I originally heard that particular album after finding it, of all places, available for checkout at the public library in Waukegan, IL. That album is also home to one of my favorite songs of his, "Brute Force and Ignorance".

To understand Rory Gallaher you have to listen to what the people who knew him say/ said. He was known for his musical integrity, down-to-earth approach, it was only ever about the music, on stage an explosive performer,but he had no interest in exploiting his wealth, fame. He refused to release singles, only wore denim, lived modestly. He was famous for his gentle, polite personality, and he made time for his fans- always. He was a purist and wouldn't sell himself out. Those are some of the reasons he is underrated but though he died young he did sell 30million albums, basically himself. You can read about his life in Rory Gallaher-Goodfella by Carol Clark, published 2005, June 1st, Classic Rock.
