Rory was the real thing. No token gesture encores at the end of the night - he would do another 30 minutes. Sometimes he would be inside the crowd playing - like they were all part of an event. Way back in 73 I saw Rory open for Fleetwood Mac and Deep Purple. Awesome concert! As the opener his set was about 40 minutes. I knew this song and and hollered my request during a few quiet breaks. The band left the stage and came back for their 1st ovation played two songs then off stage again. Called back by the crowd for their 2nd ovation Rory and the boys came back on stage. I was sitting about 5 rows above the floor 60 ft from the stage. Rory stepped up thanked the crowd then looked directly at me and said " this is for the guy up there" the band then played an absolutely blistering fast of Bullfrog Blues. Turned out this concert was one of the best I've seen. This was in Vancouver in 1973.

Finally. Finally. Finally. You're checking out Rory! IMO the best of the best. This performance, which was on his birthday, March 2, 1976, is just the tip of the iceberg for what this musical genius could do. He was a master of electric and acoustic guitar. A brilliant songwriter, unique vocalist, who put forth his own take on blues and rock with a sprinkle of folk and jazz. Self-taught multi-instrumentalist who played guitar, mandolin, harmonica, electric sitar, alto sax. He eschewed the strong hold of the music industry and did things HIS way. Saw him in 1978 and it was transformational, no other performer I've seen comes close. Please check out some more of his stuff. It's all fabulous. Suggest: Walk on Hot Coals, In Your Town, Tattoo'd Lady, Shadow Play, Do You Read Me, Cradle Rock, Bad Penny, also anything from his live Irish Tour '74 album - so many to choose. Also, check out his band Taste which preceded his solo career...

Rory Gallagher(pronounced GallaHER), the G is silent in Ireland where he was from, is one of the most phenominal guitarist that ever lived. He sold over 30 million albums worldwide before he passed in the 90s with liver disease. I saw him at a big all day- open air-rock festival in the early 70s in N Carolina. My friends & I were speechless as we watched his performance & heard him play. He closed out a long day of many bands-Alice Cooper, Three Dog Night, Fleetwood Mac,Poco & James Gang just to name a few that were on the roster for that day. I will NEVER forget him. His love was the Blues & he was a master. There is so much video on YT documenting this genius that u can research. Start with his 1st band "Taste" at Isle of Wight 1970 doing "Sugar Mama". Then he goes out on his own making albums & hit after hit all over the world. He refused to comply with the record companies here in USA & did things his way & maintained control of all his music rights & material. Thats why many here weren't familiar with him. But he did tour here & had a huge following with those of us who knew him. Its a great story to dig into & his music speaks for itself.Enjoy!

This Irish Rock/Blues guitarist would have rathert played in a very small venue of 300 people, then to a huge stadium of 50,000. Not because he didn't like people, but because he did. In a small venue, you can be way more intimate and closer to your fans, as opposed to a huge faceless crowd of tens of thousands. Rory's shows were legendary. He was one of the top 3 all time Rock/Blues guitarists of the 60s,70s, and 80s. Jimi Hendrix said of Rory "He's the greatest guitarist in the world, that no one has heard of." That's high prais coming from a guy l;ike Hendrix. Rory, like Hendrix, was on a different level of guitarists, but both were humble, and didn't brag about themselves. Maybe that was another reason Jimi liked him.

my intro to rory was "blueprint" in 73, i think, then "irish tour 1974." i love "as the crow flies" (an acoustic cover of a great tony jo white tune) and everything else rory gave us. thanks, Jamel for this reaction and all the others.

Saw him a few times in London. Live? Unbelievable! Gary Moore used to take advise from Rory.

Finally!!! Now that you’ve reacted to him, all of the others will follow your lead (as usual). I saw Rory and his band several times between the 70’s and the early 90’s and they were always great!!! Thanks for the great music and the smiles!

Go down that rabbit hole fella! Rory is quite imply the greatest guitarist to walk the face of the Earth.Next stop for you? Out on the Western Plain from the Cork Opera House....JUST DO IT!!!!

Great way to start the day. If anyone has a list of top guitarists that doesn’t include Rory, they just don’t get it. If you ever have the chance to see Band of Friends with Davy Knowles, that is Rory’s band with a great young guitarist doing a full Rory set. PS I saw him 3x but never with piano. That adds a great new dimension.

Canned Heat covered this. The song was made by William Harris, an American country blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He recorded sixteen songs between 1927 and 1928, of which fourteen were released on record.

Humble, an unbeatable performer, my favourite show to go to throughout the 70s. Rest In Peace, Rory. I've been requesting this all over KZbin reaction channels for the last year-and-a-half. Thanks, Jamel, maybe I can take a break now, take care of some necessaries. Peace, brother, no wonder you have 863,000 subs. You were my first, you're still the best. Blessings on your wonderful family, can't wait to see 'em again too. D

@DFV Louderilk I've never tried to play any of Rory's stuff, I belted out the beginning of 'Bullfrog...' one time and surprised myself. Always wanted to complete the experience. Saw Mahogany Rush in '75, must've been, they had 4 albums out at that point and played mostly Hendrix at Massey, again, and I figured I could identify which versions. Some of his original stuff is really cool, not so very familiar, great guitar player, absolutely, that acid-awakening back-story always bugged me. Don't care, I should look up more, it's been a few years. I used to play some Hendrix among others. He was the only guitar hero as such I really did. Oh, some Cream. Liked some others from Eric's catalog too.

Now that you have discovered Rory, now find some of his somewhat slower acoustic blues. Pistol Slapper. Blues, Too Much Alcohol, As the Crow Flies, Goin' to My Hometown, etc.. You won't be disappointed. I was fortunate enough to see him live 3 times, the first at an outdoor festival in Germany and two more times in my hometown at a venue called Mississippi Nights. Since no one knew who he was, I was able to park myself at the foot of the stage both times.

Thanks for that, Rory loved live performances where there were no constraints and he could let it rip. Try watching his band 'Taste' live at the Isle of Wight, either 69 or 70, and see what I mean!

Rush opened for Rory in the 70's, then he opened for them in the 80's. There's a nice video on here somewhere with Alex Lifeson talking about what he learned from Rory.

@@valeriebarr5729 yes, but when I saw him he wasn't on the tour. There was an explanation for it but I forget what it was. He was great though. One of the most memorable openers for me. Right up there with seeing Judas Priest open for Wireless and UFO at a small venue on the campus of University of Texas Arlington.
