Welcome aboard! You are beginning to understand why we are everywhere and go to great lengths to experience the ultimate in music experience. There are not words to describe being in the presence of an Eyes being played like that. When the bass is felt and not heard, when the emotional guitar work makes you smile so big that your face muscles hurt the next day. There is no "sitting around" at a Grateful Dead "world" picnic when Eyes is played...however, you may find yourself moving & wiggling in a pool of sweat with 20,000 of your closet sisters n brothers.

They are just the pinnacle of jam masters and it’s definitely one of those bands you can sit yourself down at a massive stage in a park like Central Park NYC or Hyde Park London where you can get 100,000 plus, families, dogs playing with each other .. surfing the leftovers and stealing the chicken sandwiches and cheese etc too xxx Hehehehe...... I know I’d love it and my Dalmatian Vashti would too ..... she’d just go round everyone looking to get clapped and snuggled while giving out kisses and hoping you’d give her a little something, apple core, melon skin, carrot, chicken(only if no bones and she’s been a very good girl) etc etc .... love it

Phil Lesh on the bass is a master. He essentially learned to play the bass while in the band. That's why he sounds like noone else. He had a classical music upbringing and was a fan of some really out there composers. Robert Hunter wrote a large portion of the lyrics that Jerry sung, he was a brilliant mind of a different level.

Remember - Phil had background and training in classical music (played violin and trumpet), with a particular interest in avante-garde composers, which gave him the understanding and love for unusual time signatures and poly-rhythmic structure. The violin gave him the left hand he needed to translate all of that passion into the bass. My son followed the same path - trained as a classical violinist, and later took up the bass -
@aryehbarson4 жыл бұрын
Phil is a wonder of taking a simple two-chord progression (like the solo sections here) and giving them life and sustenance not previously beknown to humans. It keeps it from getting stale and trite. He is so not a "meat and potatoes" bass player. After his awesome solo he hits a low G a couple of times (about 11:51), indicating he really wants to go elsewhere but not really spelling out where he wants to go. The boys aren't willing to relent just yet. but concede to try some alternate avenues. After about 14:35 they've totally shifted gears. I still don't know how they do it and remained coherent.

As I was cycling, I started look closer at the trees, plants, and flowers around me. It was then looking around at nature, I made the connection We are The Eyes of the World. We can see and comprehend the natural world. We gain a love and an appreciation towards our world. Grateful dead (or grateful ghost) is a folktale present in many cultures throughout the world. The most common story involves a traveler who encounters a corpse of someone who never received a proper burial, typically stemming from an unpaid debt. The traveler then either pays off the dead person's debt or pays for burial. The traveler is later rewarded or has their life saved by a person or animal who is actually the soul of the dead person; the grateful dead is a form of the donor.[1][2] The grateful dead spirit may take many different physical forms including that of a guardian angel, animal, or fellow traveler.[3] The traveler's encounter with the deceased comes near the end of the traveler's journey.

Got out of a potential minor bust in Landover,MD 1990 by telling that story. After being messed with for a long time, one of the officers asked me, "What's with all the Skeletons?" I began telling them about the common mythology story from many cultures around the world. Then told them the story of the traveler helping a stranger & ten being helped himself later in his travels. I could tell I had them completely enthralled & I knew we'd make it through ok!

@@troubledwaters7441 He's right. You are not quite right. People in the early Dead scene were aware of the Egyptian book of the Dead. This was the first versions of “Eyes” that I ever heard. I was getting ready to head into a store and I just sat in the parking lot and listened to every second. It’s still one of my favorite versions. Cheers to you Jamal! For a guy who mostly reacts to studio, radio songs, a listen to this is a big leap and requires patience and a keen ability to listen. The weaving in and out from minor key to major during the jam is part of what makes this song so emotional. It’s also why many people can’t sit and stomach Dead jams. You slipped in it now, brother! After this one, you’re ready for just about anything the Dead can throw at you. Peace to y’all.

This was a Wall Of Sound show. The Grateful Dead sound crew, Owsley Stanley and Dan Healey developed the first really amazing portable concert sound system, portable being a relative term. It was powered purely by MacIntosh Amplifiers and stacks of quality speakers in a specific array. All the sound came from behind the band, and it was clean, clean , clean. Volume and detail.
@jfoss19744 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they engineered a two mic system for each vocalist to cancel out the feedback loop that was generated. Way ahead of their time!

You’re easily my favorite “Reaction KZbinr”. I’ve been a Deadhead since 1973. Please do songs from The Greatest Album ever made, Europe ‘72. The best and iconic versions of their masterpieces. Some of these songs have no studio versions too. Please do Brown Eyed Women, Ramble on Rose, Jack Straw, Mr Charlie, Sugar Magnolia, China Cat Sunflower and I could list every song really. And this is only one album. Then go to Skull and Roses, Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty and many more. THE GREATEST BAND EVER!!! Better than The Beatles and the Stones. And they even have the live videos from the actual tour of these songs from Europe ‘72 on KZbin already. The best of both worlds. To watch them actually performing these iconic versions is a trip for all who know them note for note.

The term “on the bus” was a reference to the straight laced society folks who frowned upon the shadow culture developing around them. They rode the bus while listening to the propaganda the music of this generation warned about. Unless you’re talking about the bus of hog farmers known as the “Mary Pranksters”. Then, yes, be on the bus. 😉😁

I had him listen to it and now he is 13 and playing Grateful Dead music on his guitar. One thing I want to mention, at some point I figured out I was a Deadhead long before I ever listened to the Grateful Dead. Maybe sometime soon you will have that realization too. " 'Eyes of the World' might be heard as conveying a message of hope, viewing human consciousness as having value for the planet as a whole. There are echoes in the song of a wide range of literary and musical influences, from Blaise Pascal to (perhaps) Ken Kesey; from talk of a redeemer to the title of the song itself." -David Dodd

So pretty.. Nothing makes smile like Jerry's voice and guitar playing. it just lifts me. Jamal, as you probably can imagine, they played these song over and over and no 2 versions of the same song were ever the same. Sometimes they could be on fire amazing and some nights not so much. This is the reason dead heads all have their favorite shows and trading boot leg tapes was so huge back in the day. That's Jerry jamming for sure. And his beautiful unique voice. And btw.. he's missing his middle finger. Interesting fact if you didn't know. That's Phil jamming on the bass. Love you Jamal..God Bless You

Jamel, thank you for the love and joy you share. When we visit each others church and learn each others songs, the world opens up. I connect with my community through music and open mic jams, and I have had this scenario played out several times in my garage with new musicians I meet and we exchange great music we have never heard before. I had never heard Gil Scott Heron's "The Preacher" and I in turn put on some Jerry Garcia Band, and minds are collectively blown. If you get a chance, you might enjoy a project I was a part of that blended hip hop and Grateful Dead music, Kingpin Rowe and the Grateful Church. Kingpin was born and raised in Berkeley, Ca and collaborated with Bob Weir and Rat Dog. This show was 100% improvised, and this song jamming Eyes of the World with Margin Gaye's What's Going On and Kingpin rapping about peace in the middle east and 911. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKemqmN_rNKcm9E or the Dead classic Morning Dew with Kingpin sharing his story and message of peace and love kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGGmo4ypabKmh9k ....peace to you my friend, keep the jams alive!!!
