The first "ooh" is weeping... the first "aah" is crying, and the second "aah" is sobbing until the finale with the scream of agony-- such a clever, musical expression that depicts the grief and suffering people experience seeing their brothers-in-arm killed in battle.

He expands his voice out even more in the studio version and adds different notes in but to actually watch them do this live makes you really appreciate how they all collectively came together to maje this special.I think the crowd were either told to stay quiet or were just mesmerised

I was 13 in 1970 when Child In Time was released. It was a bad year for youth who dared to protest the war. The Kentucky state massacre happened May 4th and shocked our nations families, parents and children; that our government would fire on and kill our own children on college campus. It was horrendous. When Child in Time was released that year it seemed like an anthem to the antiwar movement.

One of the best live albums ever recorded was Deep Purple's - Made in Japan. This was them at their peak (according to various members of the band) and was recorded very well. The only member of the band that has ALWAYS been in the band, is the drummer Ian. He's one of the best rock drummers ever and rarely gets the appreciation he deserves. One of the single biggest influences to my drumming, right with Bonzo, Moon, Bozzio and Peart. Rich the Ancient Metal Beast

Never a show exactly the same as before because they enjoyed improvising. gr8 seeing the way each brother reacts a bit differently, Quintel is rather analytical while Laron is almost pure reactions and as usual Jamel is the perfect blend in between ... keep up the good work!!

IMO, the late 60's and early 70's brought us a fantastic quality of music, a quality that I doubt will ever be equaled .

The best version of Child in Time is on the live album "Made in Japan" ! The best album of Deep Purple.

Agreed, although I like the original too. So did Jon Lord by the sounds of it, because his part is lifted note for note from this obscure jam, released before Child in Time was written. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHKxgJukp8mHkMk

For me, this tune is up there with "Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zeppelin. The studio version is cleaner & more melodic, but seeing Deep Purple Live, is among my life's golden memories

He had to close his eyes while singing so that they did not pop out of his head. So much power being generated....

Three of the five are still killing it. Keyboardist Jon Lord sadly passed a dozen years ago. Guitarist Blackmore left the band in the early 90's to pursue other musical interests. Their newest album just came out in 2021.

Listen to the studio version. There is a section of the guitar solo that they left out in this version. You can hear it in the movie Twister.

I saw them live 2 times and they did this song . Man that was a long time ago but i still remember it like it was yesterday. There was a couple sitting behind us and i could not believe what they did. They brought their new born baby with them. Crazy, it was in a bassinet with no ear protection and a little blanket to cover it from all the pot smoke . An infant a\in the same building as the worlds loudest rock band. I was pissed off and let them know exactly how i felt about it. What would you do ?

Purple is still playing Ian Paice (Drummer) Ian Gillian (Vocals), Roger Glover (Bass) are still there, Don Airey (Keyboards) replaced Jon Lord after his passing and Steve Morse (Guitars - ex-Dixie Dregs/ Kansas) replaced Ritchie Blackmore! I saw them back in 2019 - they will be touring again in 2022 (Only 3 dates - in Florida before they head to European dates. Maybe back here more extensively in 2023

According to Ian Gillan, this song is about Nuclear War. The whole world felt like they were at the mercy of the US and the Soviet Union.

To be fair, smoking weed was practically REQUIRED in the early 70s & it really helped focusing on epic multi-layered arrangements like this. Ian draws you in like going to church… shoves you out in the maelstrom of the Purp slinging solos, then brings you back to church.
