Many commenters (justifiably!) praising lead vocals, guitar, and even the drums. But where's the love for Jon Lord, master of the keyboards? Certainly one of the top ten rock keyboardists of all time!

Jon Lord was the most amazing keybordest I've ever seen and or heard. Sure, Steely Dan had a savant on retainer, but Lord had more "feel" to his music, he just leapt out of the speakers! RIP you master of the ivories (plastics)

Well all 3 bands were formed in 1968. Paranoid (ft. Paranoid, iron man and war pigs) and Made in Japan (ft. this song, Highway Star and Smoke on the water) came out in 70 and Zeppelin IV (ft. Stairway, black dog and rock n roll) came out in 71. So they all pretty much at the exact same time. Imagine being a fan of this stuff in the early 70s when it was all coming out for the first time, staggering.

Deep Purple came out with this in 1970. They had a different vocalist and bass player in their first records, and they were playing kinda brit pop with some psychedelic flavor, until they decided to go with this direction (now known as hard rock). They were the fathers of hard rock alongside Led Zeppelin, who also were starting by that years, although Led Zepp were more blues oriented kind of vibe going on. Pink Floyd, on the other hand, were a psychedelic prog band, and started a little bit earlier. Man, you HAVE to listen Deep Purple´s BURN, from their third reincarnation, when they (again) changed their vocalist and bass player. And if possiible, watch the 1974 live version, it´s mind blowing. Then, watch the 2014 live version from a tribute concert for the late (and great) keyboard player Jon Lord. It features original Deep Purple´s drummer, current DP keyboardist Don Airey, Glenn Hughes, bass player and second voice from that third reincarnation and Iron Maiden´s front man Bruce Dickinson. BURN!

There is a good reason why these guys are always mentioned alongside Led Zeppelin as the pioneers of rock, because.. they belong up there. Another song of theirs, you have to check out is "Smoke on the water"... it'll get you too :D GREAT reaction to one of the alltime great bands :D (to answer your question, both Zepp and Purple have been founded in 1968, they came and conquered together :) )

Child In Time, Demon's Eye, and Stormbringer are some of Deep Purple's best, but rarely get played on radio these days. Congrats on reacting to one of their true classics. Deep Purple was pretty much contemporary with Zeppelin. They might have had their first hit a couple of years before Zeppelin released their first album. Generally, though, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath are considered the (Un)holy Trinity of hard rock/heavy metal music.

Love your reaction! Deep Purple has always had brilliant musicianship and a blues/hard rock style that's kept me listening for over 45 years - delighted you got a buzz out of this track Jamal d

I LOVE the reaction from Jamal! HE GETS IT! He understands what all of the 60-somethings listened to almost 50 years ago, and continue to listen to. Bless you!

Awesome reaction. Ian Gillan, the best singer this band had. Jon Lord on organ (RIP). Ritchie Blackmore on guitar. Roger Glover on bass. And an excellent drummer in Ian Paice.

What a great year 1968 was: Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Jethro Tull all arrived in the world of music! It was a great year to be 16. Love your passion brother.

these songs bring back memories of cruising around Tucson AZ with my dad when i was little he would always play these old jams and try to get me to understand the magic of them.... as they say " you wont understand until you're older". Love you dad!

Most underrated in this band is probably the Bass Guitarist.

This was when kids were getting fed to the canon fodder in Vietnam. A cry for peace. Singer Ian Gillan was the original voice of Jesus on Jesus Christ Superstar.

It's great to see that stank face maximus again! Deep Purple in Rock is a classic, a staple for the "parking lot" at High School. Zep, Purple, Sabbath in there too. Now, try Rush "Working Man," Blue Oyster Cult early stuff, Judas Priest as previously requested. Keep on stankin'

Ian Gillian = massive pipes. To hear him at his most menacing, give a listen to one of his songs with Black Sabbath: Disturbing The Priest.

Yea man. We grew with this kinda shit on the radio. It was quite the amazing time. Hearing also Stairway To Heaven playing in the distance on some tiny little Portable AM Radio. almost haunting.
