The Hook is the Chorus of the song. He is saying the words of the song dont matter, only his voice does. He will make you emotional regardless of what he says and then the chorus (hook) will real you back in and make you sing along.
@douglasmurata49453 жыл бұрын
And the song is done to the tune of Canon in D by Pachelbel, the now infamous “four chord” song. So many successful pop songs use that chord progression, so he’s basically saying “I can sing about anything and use this four chord hook and you’ll listen.” What I love most about this is that, unlike other “four chord” songs, Hook continues with more of Canon in D than other pop songs, and doesn’t rely on just the four chord hook.

This song is so brilliant in that he tells you exactly what he’s about to do, does exactly what he said he was gonna do, and most people respond exactly how he said they would. Even the music itself isn’t particularly original, it’s a jam on Pachabel’s Canon in D one of the most commonly used chord progressions in history. Basically, this is John Popper’s (the singer’s) hot take on the state of the music industry back in the early 90s, and the irony of the whole thing is that it became probably their most successful release and helped launch the band into the mainstream public’s eye. One of my favorite bands with a deep, deep discography through the years.

From Wiki: The chord progression of "Hook" is very similar to the basic structure of Pachelbel's Canon in D,[3][4] (D-A-Bm-F#m-G-D-G-A, or I-V-vi-iii-IV-I-IV-V),[5] but transposed to the key of A major. This chord progression is very widely used in popular music, often as the hook, leading to other satirical takes on the use of this chord structure. The song's lyrics, aimed directly at the listener, assert that the lyrical content of any song is effectively meaningless, as the song's musical hook will keep listeners coming back, even if they are unaware of the reason. The song is genius. And also, you're listening to the Jimi Hendrix of harmonica playing. Many consider him the best.

They are amazing live. One of the most talented harmonica players too. I saw them open for the Allman Brothers back in the 90’s and they were incredible.

The song was a troll against the music industry for trying to force him to writing pop songs to sell instead of his artistry. The music industry abandoned him not too long after this. Also, the music itself is trollish. The music is an interpretation of Pacobel's Canon in D minor, a classical piece of music. It's used a lot in pop songs, such as "Memories" (the newest I can think of.)

There's a musical comedian who points out all the songs that use the Pachelbel Canon and hit is endless.

this song reached #8 on the charts in 1996, so a lot of people were drawn in by the hook

Girl your reaction is exactly how I felt when I purchased the cd! Looooooooove them! Nothing like a late night drive with it playing. Thanks for sharing 🙂

One of the songs that opened up my eyes to the use of harmonica. It used to turn me off I'd always just dismissed it. Clever song, just talking about how the "hook" of a song is what "hooks" you on a song. Masquerading as a love song. He spells it out at 2:54 Edit - Ah, you get it! Yes!

I scrolled through all my reactors, I knew Brad would be the one to get the meaning the first go around.

"The Hook" is the chorus of the song, that grabs your attention and keeps you listening. No matter what else is going on the rest of the time that most people pay no attention to, The Hook snags you and you sing along for 20 or 30 seconds.

Fav Blues Harp Artist. So fast and clear, no flubbed notes and doesn’t hide behind distortion.

Saw these guys live while in Iraq in 2006. They, in particular the singer, John Popper, is frickin amazing live. He wears these suspender/vest type things with like 50 harmonicas in them lol. Anyways they are so much better live!

This was a great reaction because you can see the song work its magic in real time. It is a great sounding song, but it plays on the fact most people don’t bother listening to the lyrics. It’s very inventive and works on multiple levels.

Blues traveler has a ton of excellent songs that get overlooked. I went to a show a couple years ago a mere months after he had throat surgery and he killed it.
