I owned, drove, and loved my fully loaded Black on Black 2014 ELR for 6 years. I bought it in 2017 from a Caddy Dealer in White Plains, NY - they never sold it and retained it as a Fleet Vehicle with 11k miles and it was in Mint Condition when I bought it for $34k. Cadillac only made 2,403 of the 2014 ELRs and I was one of the very lucky people to have owned one of Cadillac's very first EVs. No ELRs were made in 2015 but then Cadillac rolled out a much improved ELR in 2016 in which they boosted the Torque from 295 ft-lbs in the 2014 model to 373 ft-lbs for the 2016 model - making it a Pocket Rocket! However, only 530 of the awesome 2016 models were made - and I am one of the very proud, and very happy owners of this truly awesome automobile - a Mint Condition fully loaded model with a gleaming Gloss White exterior and a Gorgeous Two-Tone Cashmere Interior. It is everything that I loved about the 2014 model - and so much more! Sadly, ELR production ended with the 2016 model which is without question, the most awesome car that Cadillac has ever made! Because of the very limited production run of the 2016 ELR with only 530 made - very few people will ever be able to experience what an absolutely amazing car the 2016 Cadillac ELR is - a one-of-a-kind exceptional Luxury Hybrid EV with no match in the entire world!

I purchased this car this past fall, a 2016 Cadillac ELR (with the Kona leather seats, and the Performance Package) with < 24k miles. This car drives really, Really well. Jay calls it a hybrid (plug in hybrid), but Cadillac called it an Extended Range Vehicle. It runs on Electric only, then when it depletes the battery, the fuel is burned to power the generator (yes, there are settings to alter the driving modes, but for the most part, Tour mode does just that). On a full charge (10 hours L1 120VAC, or 4 hours on L2 240VAC charging station) with temperatures > 34-36F I can get a projected 39miles of electric only driving range but I get more like 43miles in the real world. I haven't had a need to purchase fuel in those operating temperatures. I drive it in the winter as a backup car, and the cold weather alters the range down to about 26miles - 28miles with temperatures well below 28F. Several things come into play, but for the most part fuel is used to warm up the cabin interior when it gets simply too cold to operate on Electricity mode. You are also using more electricity because of the cold temperatures, the rear defroster, the heated steering and heated seats, the HVAC system that runs at a higher speed etc. Out on the open road, it is pretty silent, and very quiet for several reasons: Aerodynamic shape, built like a tank, insulation, noise cancellation technology. In the city it is smooth, taut, quiet as well because of the weight (>4000lbs), built like a tank, electronic suspension dampers. I believe this is the closest halo vehicle / Auto Show Car design, that didn't alter from the original concept and put into production with little if any changes of any modern day vehicle in the last 20 years. So it looks beyond amazing, ahead of it's time, and today many folks mistaken it for a 2022-2023 production vehicle. Parking sensors front and rear, blind spot detector, backup hidden object detection, full LED bulbs used throughout 98% of the vehicle (I changed the backup bulb and rear license plate bulb to LED), interior door handles are electric to open the doors, the door handles are hidden, automatic door/trunk unlocking by remote presence (you can leave the remote in your pocket or purse, and the vehicle will unlock or lock on it's own), electric Glove Box Opening lmao... The caveats for me, are few. No, I wouldn't of paid 76K USD when this vehicle was new, so I can't say this was a problem for me now since I purchased it used and well below half of the original asking price. The rear seats and rear cabin are for people small adults only, or any big kid under 14 years of age. In either case, it would be for short trips, and I wouldn't expect anybody to sit back there for any kind of long drives.

I don't think you understand how this works. yes you can press the brake for regen too. They just give you a neat "gimmick" that allows you to regen without taking your foot away from the gas pedal and also you don't have to worry about pressing the brake so hard that you are engaging the brake pads. So it gives a little extra control, but the regular method still works too.

I just traded in my 2016 ELR 2 weeks ago, after 5 years and 40k miles. I previously had a 1st-gen and 2nd-gen Volt. The ELR is one of the prettiest cars I've ever seen, and I constantly received compliments. From a practicality standpoint, it was pretty rough losing the hatchback of the Volts; despite its fuel efficiency, the ELR definitely has the usability of a sportscar (unfortunately). Ultimately, I needed a car with more everyday practicality, and I also wanted something with AWD for the snow. I ended up replacing the ELR with a BMW i4. But I'll always remember my years with the ELR... it was a car I loved from the moment the Converj concept was shown.

I have a 2016 ELR and I love it. Jay, I hope you got a chance to drive or even buy a '16 ELR, especially with the Performance package. The upgrade in power is very noticeable, and they really tweaked the whole car nicely. I drove the '14 model on several occasions and it wasn't enough to push me over the top despite the sexy body, but in 2016 they basically fixed everything, including the balky CUE system in the original. It's a shame Cadillac didn't stick with the ELR, because especially the 2016 model was definitely one of the nicest cars they ever made, and one of the best and most advanced cars under 6 figures anywhere. I think Johan (the current president of Cadillac) just never stood behind the ELR, for whatever reason.

I personally believe that the Jay Leno's Garage channel is one of the best channels on KZbin, and easily a top 5 automotive program considering ANY media (up there w/ Car Talk on NPR, Top Gear, etc). I think that his choice to retire from late night a couple years ago was a good move, and should be reconsidered. It would give a young hip comic a chance at building a show, and free up Jay from the tired late night host routine and allow him to focus on his true labor of love.
@billdefalco93807 жыл бұрын
Jay Leno made an excellent observation when he said near this beginning of this video: "You can't sell something before its time". In my opinion Jay definitely hit the nail square on the head as to why less than 3,000 of these remarkable automobiles were built before the production line was shut down. As the proud owner of a gorgeous 2014 Cadillac ELR, I'd like to share with you what so many of the folks who looked at the ELR simply did not see. Let me begin by adding a Correction to the EPA Electric Driving Range spec of 37 miles. In the hands of a skilled driver who knows and fully understands how to drive a car with this remarkable dual motor electric drive and regenerative braking technology, it is possible to realize an Electric Vehicle Driving Range (EVR) of 45 miles - as I am getting on my fully loaded stunningly beautiful rich deep-gloss midnight-black Cadillac ELR. The on-board gasoline powered electric generator totally eliminates the range anxiety of the all-electric cars, such as the Teslas, by allowing you to fill up at any gas station and be right back on the road in just minutes, as opposed to being down for Hours at a time to re-charge the batteries in the 100% electric vehicles. This excellent and well thought out battery-powered electric drive / gas-fueled electric generator backup concept makes futuristic electric drive a logical and practical fit within our current "pit stop" quick refuel and go infrastructure, and it allows you to take very long trips well in excess of 1,000 miles, in the same time as it takes in convention automobiles - something that no Tesla or any other all-electric vehicle can do! The 2014 Cadillac ELR is so much more than a just a 2014 Chevy Volt with a different body. For openers, its drop-dead gorgeous "Bat Mobile" like styling delivers a stunning look that will virtually never go out of style. The awesome styling is so exceptional, that the Cadillac ELR has been ranked among the world's Top Ten Best Styled Automobiles in history! The stand-out futuristic styling will endure well into the future, and because of the limited production run of this remarkable vehicle, where a total of only 2.958 were manufactured, it is destined to become a highly sought after and very rare collector's car. Beyond the superior exterior styling of the ELR (as compared to the Volt) and the world class luxury interior with loads of real wood and other rich appointments, and so many other exceptional features that are not found in the Volt (including dual 12-way power front seats) both the power output and performance of the ELR have been significantly tweaked-up over the Volt. The ELR has 40 more horsepower for a total of 209, and more significantly, it has 20 more foot-pounds of torque, for a total of 295 ft. lbs. that delivers brisk and exhilarating acceleration that leave the Volt in the dust and which makes for an exceptionally enjoyable driving experience, bolstered by the Active Suspension Control of the ELR (also not found in the Volt). The Sport Mode increases the accelerator pedal response, tightens up the steering response and firms up the suspension for an amazing driving experience that spoils you and makes you never want to go back to driving conventional cars. In summary, even when you are not in Sport Mode, the brisk acceleration from the tweaked up horsepower and torque over the Volt, and ride, handling and cornering of the ELR is nothing short of spectacular. If car buyers in the luxury automobile segment were more informed and taught how to properly drive this amazing high performance luxury car, they would have been drawn to it in droves, and Cadillac would have been hard-pressed to keep up with the sales demand. The ELR truly is one of the best examples of Excellence in Design, Styling, Luxury, Advanced Cutting-Edge Technology and Heart-Throbbing Performance ever to emerge from Cadillac. It's such a shame that so many of the people in the luxury car buying segment were not properly enlightened to fully understand and appreciate this remarkable GEM of truly exceptional and outstanding futuristic luxury automobile from Cadillac - whose reputation for innovating parts standardization through manufacturing the world's best high-precision, top of the line superior-quality automobiles gave birth to the assembly concept of building cars. I've said a mouth full here - but now that you are enlightened, you need only to get behind the wheel of an ELR and with a little coaching - you'll be in for a driving experience that will totally blow you away and make you a believer. Had Cadillac specially trained their sales people in the art of properly and effectively presenting the ELR - it would have been a smashing run-away sales success. When Cadillac created the ELR they hit such an immense Grand Slam Home Run, that it went way over the heads of the vast majority of car buyers, but I am so glad and so fortunate to be among the elite few who kept a close eye on that grand slam, and landed one of the limited 2.954 copies of this epic automobile into my garage! In the final analysis, it's actually possible to sell a car lie this before its time - to a knowledgeable, well informed, enlightened and very astute car buyer - like me!
@dhemrick7 жыл бұрын
As the owner of a 2014 ELR, I wholeheartedly concur with this excellent assessment. The ELR is a fantastic car that unfortunately goes over the heads of most people. But for those of us who get it, we understand exactly how amazing this gem of a car really is. Jay drew a very good comparison to the Chrysler Airflow. It was way ahead of it's time and people didn't get it, but now we take for granted the aerodynamic styling, unibody construction, and safety features that the Airflow had a good 20 to 50 years before those became the de-facto standard for all other cars.

I tend to agree, my primary motivation for the Model S is that it allows 200+ miles on one charge with super performance. Had I needed city only driving, it would have been OK with smaller battery. Now, one thing that a large battery does is actually help increase the horsepower. The Model S P85 has 416 max horsepower only thanks to the number of 18650 battery cells working in parallel at max acceleration. Less capacity = less horsepower.

@snowshredder10211 жыл бұрын
Apples to oranges. This is a plug in hybrid, therefore range anxiety is eliminated. If you're comparing just the battery size, then yes the Tesla is superior.
@scotttisdale277311 жыл бұрын
snowshredder102 I cannot completely disagree with you, but tell that to everyone that thinks this car is actually a competitor for the model S. Even Leno mentions Tesla in this video. It is going to attract a similar demographic so the two should be compared. The Tesla is not just superior in battery size, but the performace, acceleration, size (storage etc), and style (which I know is subjective) as well. Also the infotainment center and most of all safety. The "range anxiety" is minimized when you start with 265+ miles on your car everyday.
@snowshredder10211 жыл бұрын
I do admit that the range on the Tesla is amazing for purely electric. Unfortunately those numbers you pulled up is under extreme circumstances (no music, no AC/heater) and grandma style driving. Personally, I couldn't care less about fast accelerations on a Tesla as it would deplete the battery very fast (which defeats the whole purpose of buying electric). The infrastructure for charging stations is rapidly growing, but it still has a long way to go and if you live anywhere not in California then you will have to be careful how you travel. That being said, the Tesla is an amazing car and really has been unquestionable leader in all electric cars, it just is a car that still caters to a smaller portion to the population until it's more practical.
@scotttisdale277311 жыл бұрын
snowshredder102 Again, you make some valid points, but try test driving the Tesla and tell me you don't appreciate the acceleration. As far as travel goes, yes you need to be careful right now if you plan a road trip in a location that is currently lacking superchargers, but when the supercharger network is complete and more infrastructure is built in cities, malls, hotels etc to accommodate EV's, that problem will disappear. For everyday purposes you don't even have to think about it. No more trips to the gas station either. Right now you are also correct that it caters to a small portion of the population, but I'd argue that that is more because of price than practicality. Tesla as a company has had plans to roll out a more "financially friendly" car since inception. They need to build a brand, acceptance and desire first. That is exactly what the model S is for.

@danwat12348 жыл бұрын
7:10 INCORRECT, the engine will connect directly to the wheels in charge sustain mode at certain speeds, I believe >40MPH, for efficiency's sake. Parallel hybrid operation has it's place. I don't think the ELR is worth it, even the faster 2016 ELR.. Because there is no hatch, way less customizability through fan following. No trailer hitch for towing, the headlights do not curl around to the side of the vehicle, so they wouldn't help illuminate dark corners of a neighborhood for instance like the Volt can if you hack the DRLs to run whenever the headlights are on too, not just when the headlights are off, and switchback LEDs for the front turn signals. I don't think the LED headlights in the ELR can change angles to look around bends of the road, but I could be wrong there. If they don't not as good as Audi/BMW LED implementation. The ELR is quicker, has more safety tech and more comfort, but it so much less practical, and the 2016 ELR is so rare (maybe a couple hundred 2016s made, only about 2400 2014 ELRs made).?), it would be dramatic if it got damaged. And I think in many ways, a first generation Volt looks better than an ELR.

Love this car. I can't see EVER buying an import. I hate it when people bash American cars. However, something I noticed that made me cringe a bit. At about 10:50 into the video, Jay was making a right hand turn, and had his signal. It was on fast flash, indicating a burned out bulb. As the car has all LED illumination, I would suspect a more serious problem. For Cadillac to send this car out for a test drive by a celebrated car guy, I would like to think that whoever was involved from Cadillac would have checked out all systems before sending it out. Did anyone else notice this ?
@maflagulator10 жыл бұрын
Being that we can't truly see that Jay has his turn signal on, and yes that audio does appear to be coming from him being mic'd up in the car. However the film crew is in the lane to his left, and making what might be an improper turn from a non-turning lane in order to get this footage. Perhaps it was their vehicle that has a bulb out and is doing the 'Fast Flash' that you hear. If it really is a 'Fast Flash' happening in the ELR, and that's the worst thing to happen in an early production demo vehicle for this show, I'm not too worried. I'll be worried when my ELR, with its LED lamps, does the Fast Flash.

BMW's naming makes perfect sense to me, the first number indicates the positioning of the car, a lower first number means the car is lower positioned, for example the 3 series is lower positioned than the 5 series and so on. Then we have the 2nd and 3rd number, which indicate the engine specs. Again, a lower number means lower specs. Then we also have additional letters: a "d" obviously means the car is a Diesel, the "x" means its 4 wheel drive. Mercedes uses a similar system.

Yep.. exactly right. I have no problem with buying for image, if you got the money to spend fine. But for 1/3 the price you can get a really nice car.. and by using one that's already built your saving the world a little too. It's really pretty amazing what you can buy for less than $5K or even $2K if you are mechanically inclined and can work on it yourself.
@carlosmalave54011 жыл бұрын
For the money, the Cadillac ELR doesn't make sense. When for the same money you can get a nicely equipped Tesla Model S. The Tesla Model S outperforms this caddy in all categories , including interior and storage space. If I had the money , I would go with tesla.
@rantanamo11 жыл бұрын
I keep reading this argument, but none of the car reviews tend to totally agree. This car driven the right way has incredible range compared to the Tesla. None of the range anxiety. Its much nicer inside, is actually crash rated and hasn't had the fire problems the Tesla has. The reviews on the Tesla touchscreen tend to be worse than the CUE reviews which seem to be getting better with each vehicle. As just a vehicle to own, I'd rather own the Cadillac right now. There are Cadillac dealers everywhere. I'd certainly trust a problem to get fixed quicker by them. And yes, I know two Tesla S owners. Cool car, but its not as nice as I would expect for the price, while if you've been in a CTS or XTS(similar interior to this) they have much nicer interiors.
@ScottaHemi44011 жыл бұрын
until you run out of power in the middle of rural america cause you forgot to charge the tesla XD plus the ELR just looks nice! and if you want a car with bigger interior or sportier preformance there's a whole range of Cadillacs to choose from! ATS to Escalade! Tesla is just... Tesla... it needs to do everything because it doesn't have alternatives.

absolutely beautiful car but plenty of h.p. Jay??!! I beg to differ.... So when the 39 mile electric battery range is diminished your left with an 86 horsepower gas motor going from barely over 200h.p. down to 86 h.p. All of this "horsepower" for just under 80k.. no thanks
@787brx86 жыл бұрын
It doesn't go down to 84 horsepower once the gas engine comes on. It still has A buffer in the battery to maintain that higher horsepower number. Most people don't drive with the gas pedal all way to the floor constantly. So only 86 horsepower is needed to recharge the battery.
@BlancGivre4 жыл бұрын
It's an electric drive motor! -- No HP! -- Constant 295 lb/ft of torque for the 2014/15 model and 373 lb/ft for the 2016 model. A C5 Corvette Z06 has 400 lb⋅ft (542 N⋅m) of torque at 4,800 rpm.
@XDangerDaveX11 жыл бұрын
BMW started to dispatch from the traditional numbers indicating the displacement size. For example, the new 328 is actually a 2.0 turbo, the new 335 is actually a 3.0 turbo, the new 550 is actually a 4.4 (I think). This is a relatively new development and I don't think they "advertise" this to the American market because on average we're not necessarily big fans of small displacement turbocharged engines.

Tesla is a different technology. This isn't a fully electric car, which makes it better for people who live in places where that infrastructure is not yet in place. This also has bit more range than the Tesla.
@PassportBrosBusinessClass11 жыл бұрын
Aviator is absolutely right. America's infrastructure is not good enough for full EV yet. Not until more regular gas stations offer a charging point. Here's my opinion: EVERY MAJOR REST STOP should have a charge

Nether Warrior you're wrong by thinking Infiniti is an overpriced Nissan, they're owned by the same company just like Volkswagen owns Bugatti but you wouldn't say a Bugatti is an overpriced Volkswagen. it's not the same thing, most of the time they're on completely different platforms, fwd vs rwd, it is not like this elr that is a reworked volt, for the most part Infinitis are completely different cars than anything Nissan sells

This car was such a total failure and yet the review sounds like it's some kind of good deal this car was so poor they had to lower the price by $10,000 and they skipped a whole model year you can get one with very few miles for around $25,000 yet it originally cost $76,000
@torocars92276 жыл бұрын
calthmlikiseethm for $25k luxury car is a steal. my daily drive is 40 miles both ways. this means im paying only $5 per week to drive to and from work. Also im avoiding traffic because of hov car pool lane access saving valuable time. no other luxury car even today, can do what i mentioned above at this price point.

I LOVE this car. I have a 2004 Cadillac Deville that is the best car I have ever owned. Now, Cadillac has the highest tech cars out there. I like Tesla too, but the expensive, heavy, all- electric drive is a bit much. I think the Volt and the ELR have the best balance - electric drive for the first 35-40 miles (perfect for my daily commute) - then gas generated electric power for longer trips if needed. And NEVER any worries about running out of juice.
