As a young apprentice mechanic, I would have a question on how to do something. Some journeymen were helpful while a few would point to the manuals room and say "everything you need to know is in there". I figured out they were insecure personalities that had the thought that if they taught me what they knew, I would know that and possibly more. The threat for them was that I could then replace them. This irritates me to this day. If someone is willing to learn what I can possibly teach them, I have no problem taking the time to explain.

As much as I appreciate the work and skill that Chris put into these cars imagine how hard it is to mass produce an automobile. The science, engineering, skilled trades and design that go into every modern car is almost unimaginable. The next time before you get in your car pause to imagine how the roof was made or how the door skin is perfectly smooth as it wraps around the door frame. Think about the engineering that goes into every engine or computerized system that makes your car run the way it does. P.S. I am a retired Process Engineer I worked on the plant floor for GM a few years back and I'm pretty proud of what us folks who build cars can do.

"I'm not an artist, I'm just a car guy." --- I beg to differ, I'd say he's an artist and his medium is cars. Most machinists/metalworkers don't call themselves artists, either...but they are. If you spend a year full time to hand build anything, you're an artist. :) (read more) - The way the reflections flow across the hood. o_O Mind. Blown. - This is one of the best Leno's Garage episodes ever. This is also a great example of why you send an engineer on the show, not a marketing or management guy. Jay always gets the job done, but we get real automotive insight when we get the people who actually build the machine. Jay knows the right questions. And Doctor Rünge is a mad genius of the highest order. He's building more than just cars, he's building dreams. Awesome. :) - When they go for a ride, you really get to see that the car is not a showpiece or trailer queen. Raw and visceral form following function in the most beautiful way. This will move you on multiple levels, pun intended. ;)

It's about as close as you can get to a postwar racer. In the late 40's, early 50's it was easier to get aluminum than steel in Europe, cars like these were handcrafted in sheds with tweaked engines like 2cv Dagonnet, Peugeot 402 and 203 Darl'mat, Renault Boudot twincam, Constantin Supercharged flat-twin Panhard, Alpine A106... It's an amazing job, although I'm not a big fan of KDF !

The first porsche 356 1100 in '49 had 40hp and the 1300 between '50 and '58 had 44hp. So this performance was attained by the OKRASA fine tunings from engineer Gerhard Oettinger some of the 34hp engines in '53 had 57,5 hp afterwards accelerating out the "lady" porsches of the above mentioned engines in those days. It was situated at Osnabrueck where also Karmann was, and the abbreviation OKRASA means Osnabrueck institute of motor engine development (Kraftwagen Entwicklungs Anstalt)

Chris, I would be fascinated by a program on your ancestry. Some of the most beautiful stone and wood artistry was done during the Middle Ages, especially in Germany and France. Can't leave out Italy. I've seen a lot of it from two feet away and it is awe inspiring. Standing a couple of feet from a cathedral wall outside and looking up hundreds of feet at the art and engineering that has been there for over half a millennium is an experience that can't be described. You have to do it. Same applies inside. My point here Chris is that you must have artisans in your background because the artistry in your blood shows when you are doing things that are harmonious using only your eyes and your mind. You are a gift in this prefab, stamped out, thermo-molded throw-away society.

Regarding the discussion on oil used, think Chris was trying to say to Jay that the grade of oil (thickness) specified in air cooled engines is also dependant on the climate the vehicle is been used, basically thinner oil in a cold climate and thicker for a hot climate.
