Jay's comment towards the end was very revealing, especially for a car enthusiast. People kind of thought or perhaps still think the Boxster and Cayman are the downgrades or economy Porsches. It’s great to see Jay enjoying a Boxster. Here in the UK I daily drove a Soeed Yellow 2000 Boxster S manual with 90,000 miles on it for 4 years. It was a joy to own. Not 1 thing went wrong on it and when I came to sell it it sold in just 1 day for just £100 less than I paid for it 4 years earlier. The people that hate of them are the people that’s never driver then. Redlining that 3.2 flat 6 through the gears was an amazing sound

I have a first generation boxster that has been my daily driver car for over 10 years now. Surprisingly, the value has been going up lately. It's a great car, but even basic maintenance is definitely not cheap.

How’s the overall reliability been? Can someone own it as their only car?
@crossmyass3 жыл бұрын
@@insayn7995 as long as you only ever need space for one passenger and don't need to carry much. I run errands in mine and it's good for groceries, etc. Consumables can be expensive (tires, etc) and a "cheap" oil change will probably run you near $200 if you don't do it yourself. I just took my RS-60 Spyder on a fairly long road trip (probably 3k miles) and it performed flawlessly, but I noticed that when I got further from the coast, there were 0 Porsches. Like, I did not see a single one after I got out of Maryland, so that could be an issue if you live somewhere where a dealership is your only repair option, because from what I've seen their prices seem to be about 3x that of a reputable repair shop, even on things like oil changes. (Local dealerships here charge over $600!)

Thanks for another great video Jay. I was at the 1997 launch in Phoenix as a Porsche employee. I can't believe it's been 25 years. One bit of information for you; you wondered if Porsche began today if they would have started with mid-engine. They did in 1948! The 356-A was mid engined. They only switched to rear engine for the 911 to provide rear seats for sales potential. All the dedicated race cars have been mid engined since. Oh and your guest never answered your drag coef question. The original boxster was very low @ .31.

Dear Mr Leno, I've enjoyed many of your garage videos very much. Your sharing of knowledge and details, the time and perfection in care and restoration, the experience of hearing and seeing them on the road. I've heard you talk about a "proper gear box". My mother who recently passed at 96 was a huge fan of yours and I never managed to get her to one of your shows which she would have been thrilled over. Her cousin, Carl Gardella, who also passed was an ultimate car guy, an ace mechanic, held a boat racing record as mechanic for woman driver. I believe he also was into Chords, and sold custom parts for them. Anyway, I'm writing because I lost my viginity, meaning I bought my first 5 speed manual, a 20 year old Porsche Boxster. F'n transmission is giving me headaches! Well I will keep practicing, it's the lights and stops where I stall it. On the road it's wonderful. It is the first car that I enjoy as much as a motorcycle. Just wish I had the automatic! Thanks a lot. hahaha. Thank you for giving my mom years of enjoyment from the Tonight Show to finish up her day.

As a 718 owner, I can agree with Jay on every point with the Boxster and Cayman mid-engine lineup. If you’re a driver and want the best driving experience, get the Boxster or the Cayman. If you want to impress the locals and take your significant other out to dinner, get a 911.

Just wanted to clarify one thing. My buddy and I both own boxsters and often go on golf trips together, in either his car or mine. You can get two full sets of clubs, two collapsible folding golf bags, shoes and rain gear in the rear compartment without any trouble. We've done it many times. What a way to travel!

Less is more. The Boxster is not inferior to the 911, it just has different values, having the most power not being one of them. Some of us would rather not play the power game, and instead, concentrate on the driving. This Boxster is such an amazing car, to lust after more (it has what, 400hp?) seems kind of greedy!

I’ve gotta say that my Boxster has been the most enjoyable car I have ever driven, and I’ve driven a lot of cars. I’ve compared the mid engine vs rear engine cars on the Porsche track and honestly prefer the mid engine. The only reason to buy a 911 over the Boxster/Cayman is ego.

I have the 2013 981 Boxster S and really enjoy it. It has more power than my driving skills so I think it is plenty powerful enough. A fun car. One point on the video that I would question is I wonder if the trunk on the Boxster 25 is of a different size. I routinely fit my set of golf clubs in my trunk, all clubs in the bag except the driver, which is out of the bag and sitting on the floor of the trunk. My golf cart fits very well in the frunk with room to spare. So golfers need not be concerned, at least not with the 981. 😊
