Yeah, as a kid growing up in the 70’s & 80’s, I always liked BMW. I started losing interest around 2010, when they started getting too heavy & filled with electronics. Now it seems like they don’t really resemble BMWs anymore.

What a beautiful vehicle and color. And a great point at the end: Jason, in his youth, fantasized about all the 80s cars by reading magazines. Leno, born in 1950, fell in love with 60s cars. In both cases, when they had enough money, they went back to those loves. Same holds true for me, as well, and seems to be what happens. Not just magazines, but seeing them on the road in their full new glory, riding in them when a parent of a friend or someone has something. Whatever is debuting and in recent years debuted shortly BEFORE you're able to drive, early teens, that love forms and will always be with you.

Two great car people I really enjoy, and a German touring car. My first time working for Zeppelin in 2006 -7 in Friedrichshafen I had the use of a BMW 530 wagon for about 2 months for my weekly trips to Offenbach West of Stuttgart. The car was a joy to drive, cruised effortlessly at 200 kph even though it was a late '90s vintage. Alas, I was among the last to use it. In Spring of '07 it was replaced with a new Opel Kadet Diesel touring wagon, speed limited to 180 kph by the tires and its buzzy engine. Quite a let down, but at least I had some time with that '90s 530 on the Autobahn. Thanks for another fine episode and the memories.

Funny to hear about the swap of seats from cloth to sport “leather” seats. I did the same with my E30 like 20 years ago, still wished I didn’t lol. Great video. Thank you.

5:44 About registrating a modified car in germany: You surely know about tuning companies like AMG, Brabus, Schnitzer, Manhart,... they all alter production cars and get them registrated. How so? Because they get the necessary permissions for the modifications. But that is not exclusive for companies like that, it is about getting permission by a certified engineering expert or an expert group like TÜV. You just have to get it good enough to make sense on public roads (and most experts want to see documentation of the welding spots before grinding them flat) and pay for the service. Which is not especially cheap. For some people modifying cars is a hobby like others restore classic cars at home. But if you have altered your car without getting permissions afterwards, that can get really tough when you get caught. By the way: My father had the 325ix limousine and later the 325ix touring (sedan) - the 4 wheel driven variant of this sports car. A really fast and everyday usable car - until the front differential broke - my brother changed it for a used spare part, which had a different gear ratio (manual shift vs automatic). That broke the shaft again immediately and so we gave up on the car despite its perfect shape otherwise. But yes, an absolute classic. Unbelieveable comfortable and stable on any road condition including snow.

I have owned two 325 tourings that were imported from Germany to Canada. I was told there was another one in the city. One day I saw it going the other way, did a quick turn and chased him down. It was in much better shape than mine. He sold it to me a few months later. His came with the tow hitch hidden behind the bumper. Both were black with grey cloth and sport seats. With the rear seats up and windows down, the dogs loved being in the back. Windows on three sides and all the smells of the country side. I like the colour matched mirrors. Such an 80's tuner thing.

It’s so funny. I’m from the netherlands ( yes the small country next to Germany famous for more than just windmills and clogs ) and these cars were all over the place. Nice example though. 2.5 was really the big motor back then. Most were 1.8 or 2.0 liter 4 cilinders.

@@svenskenh644 Not sure about that. The 2.0 4 cylinder was replaced by a 2.0 6 cylinder, but not before 1999, I think.

I can confirm Jay's observation about town clocks in Germany, no matter how old the town the clocks always work and are accurate. I also like Jason's wish for a GMC Typhoon, I drove one of those and its cousin the Syclone on a track when they were new, and they're great fun.

The e30 tourings are amazing, even in Europe these days most of them have faded out of the street. I bought one last year as my first car and to this day its the best thing I have ever driven. The clutch is perfectly balanced, the steering although lacking power steering is so direct... It's just overall such a well built car that has stood the test of time so well. PS mine is a 318i so it is actually painfully slow.

Why is it a unicorn? I've seen tons of those, took a peek and there are 3 of them for sale right now where I am. One is identical, just minus sunroof but same color and wheels as this. The other two are black, one with identical wheels, the other has the bigger wheels with the same look. So the bigger 'BBS look' ones. But I am in Europe, NL not the US.
