Keep in mind the EXACT pedals make a lot of difference; you're never really gonna know until it's on your board . It's important to experiment, and I don't know how many times a pedal was disappointing in one position, outstanding in another.If you're not in a cover band, THIS is how you come by original and fresh sounds.It's also the point of using pedals in the first place.

I've done it like that for years and suffered the bane of youtube guys telling me I had it all wrong. Meanwhile, my rig sounded great in live shows, which is all that really matters... I have three boards, each with its own pedal chain order. They all sound great. Live I also switch two of the boards between two different amps as well with a Fulltone ABY. Delicious variety. Thanks for vindicating my experimentations of years past.

I run 3 independent signal paths out of my Godin Multiac Jazz SA. 13pin GK output is sent to a Roland GR55, out to channel 5 on the mixer; preamped hexaphonic piezo bridge pickup is sent to a TC Electronic Hyper Gravity compressor and then to Sub N Up octaver pedal and then on to the instrument input of the TC Helicon VoiceLive 3 multi-effects platform and out to channel 2 on the mixer; the mini humbucker is sent to Source Programmable EQ and C4 Synth, to Pitgtronix Philosopher's Tone micro compressor, to trem, to Strymon Mobius, to Strymon Deco, to Keeley Verb O Trem Workstation, to TC Electronic Flashback Delay mini, to channel 3 on mixer. You've specifically inspired me to change the order of effects for the humbucker signal; namely to put the Verb O Trem before the compressor. I'm stoked!

I picked up a 60s Reverb from Lovepedal in their latest sale, it turned up during the week and I have been loving it sitting first on my board! It's especially tasty as its got a pre-delay which can give some really dirty, spaced out lead tones!

Okay. Some notes from me... But first, a definition: foundation ((over)drive) = amp-drive / amp-in-a-box-drive. Okay. 1 The reverb that was used into an amp was always Spring. 2 Compressors that are used as post-foundation are FET, like that 76, Pulp'N'Peel & Empress or VCA: Vise Grip, Keeley CP & GC-2. 3 Modulation also can sound great in between "overdrive" and foundation overdrive. A good example is Jimi: Fuzz --> Univibe --> Foundation (Marshall Super Lead / JTM45). 4 See your foundation drives as alternative pre-amps, in general. Keep in mind some amp-like-pedals like the SD Palladium also are foundations.

Dude I've been on both sides and I'd have to say you are right. If you really want your own sound and be different from everyone else you need to experiment with your pedal placements. Take the time and try things. Some sounds will be crap but others you will never find in the the structured system that everyone tells you to do. In the end you need to take time to understand what your pedals do and how to use them.

This was a really great demonstration that unconventional layout can have great results. You see so many wonderful guitarists who put all their pedals straight into the front of an amp. Then others will tell you that you need to put certain pedals into an effects loop. Neither are wrong, they're just different. I think any placement can work but you are going to want to mess around and trust your ears. Thanks Jay for another cool video!

I typically follow the fuzz before vibes, vibes before drives rule, but I use my chorus in front of drives along with a belle epoch tape delay cause of the pre amp in it. Then I go drives, amplifier, and then any other delays and reverbs. It took a ton of fiddling and wiring changes to get where I wanted my sound to be, just because of how standard most people wire their rigs up.

The idea of compressing my dirt pedals terrifies me. Nothing like boosted noise to ruin your tone. I think we probably run our compressors in a very different way though. As for my setup, I run a wet/dry/wet system.. Sounds pretty amazing and I can get a lot of true stereo movement in my sound.. Not just dual mono type of stuff either. But you've made me think about some new ways to order my stuff. Thanks for that. Enjoyed your video.

Kinda wish all pedals had blend knobs. My main issue is volume loss or gain. I don't really run a lot of modulation with dirt, but when I do, I don't want to lose the tone. I run all modulation through my effects loop to combat the issue. I had 9 to 10 pedals, but cut my board back to 4. Having great onboard tremelo and reverb eliminated 2 pedals. Phase 90 & Univibe just doesn't sound right in the loop or in the chain because of the volume issues. I basically need to keep them near the same level as my OD. Like the idea of dropping an OD/boost at the end. So I'll give it a shot.

It's interesting to see somebody going against the conventional wisdom. I completely get what you're doing and I like the results though I don't think it would work for me. I'm at risk of spending longer fiddling with my pedal order and settings than practicing the guitar so I'm hoping to be able to leave things as they are for a bit.

@robertbrown2728
@robertbrown2728 4 жыл бұрын
@@macmuggo5459 you are quite right. It doesn't really take that long. I think the reason I'm reluctant to do a really drastic reorder like the one in the video is because I have spent many hours tweaking my existing order particularly the drive pedals and at last I've got them to do what I really want. I've always wanted to be able to use one pedal board for most of the gigs that I do and that means being able to go 1) from a completely clean sound to an optional volume boost and slight fattening for solos. 2) very mild edge of breakup rhythm sound with an option on light overdrive on solos and 3) a crunch rhythm sound and heavy overdrive for out and out rock solos. Now I have succeeded in getting all the sounds that I normally use I'm hoping to be able to leave the board alone for a while and concentrate on the playing :-)

@@robertbrown2728 I get what you are saying. I think the most important thing is to know what YOU want as your sound. So if you got it nailed why bother. It flies in the face of conventional wisdom - but you've got a modular system (pedals) that are easy to rearrange...so why not try it out. Delay is usually all about the dynamics of the delayed signal, which a compressor will reduce. It would make more sense just to change that at the delay pedal. But if your delayed signal is changing in character (eg BBD delay getting much darker with every repeat) then compressing that might be a sound that works for you. What about modulation - tremolo being the most extreme. Put it in front of distortion and the signal peaks will distort (the wave shape is important, some have rise times, square does not). After distortion is a different experience, the whole signal is distorted. To stop you falling into conventional thinking why not put all your effects into a bag (or pieces of paper with their names on) and randomly draw them? That's a lot of frogs to kiss, but if you want a different sound..... How about underdrive? Turn your amp up a bit but turn down the output of an overdrive to maintain your original volume. Instead of clicking in an overdrive, for solos, you turn off the underdrive. Or stop thinking distortion and use a graphic as a boost/driver. Boost mids for classic rock or scoop them for modern metal. And have a buffered output, unless you want signal loss. This might be shit with poor buffers (introducing noise), but most are good these days. True bypass isn't great for everything.

Not sure if this is different or interesting, but I love running a gravelly OD into a smoother OD for a wall of noise effect. In my case it is a Small Sound/Big Sound fuckoverdrive into a Maxon OD808. Could replace the FO with an Interstellar Overdriver and the Maxon with any flavor of TS.

Been playing with this idea since I got this LA Lady overdrive pedal from source audio. As I was usually to lazy to keep switch things back and forth. Three peddal has got this great feature in which the right channels can be used as an effects loop. Anything in this loop can be configured to be pre or post overdrive in any of the six preset slots. So in an instant I can go from modulation pre to post back to pre. Sure this can also be done with a switcher. But having it inside a pedal saves a lot of space! Plus it's a noise gate and a four band parametric EQ.

I have heard of doing it this way, a lot, lately. I have my modulation and reverb in my effects loop. I have recently moved my compression between my fuzzes, and my od/distortion. I think I'll try putting the univibe after my wah pedal, at the beginning of the chain, and see what happens. Thanks for the great content. I have to say, I don't think I've ever seen someone so happy, playing guitar. I thoroughly enjoy your demos.

Nobody said you have to follow conventional order. If you have a sound that you achieve by using a different order go for it.

Will disorder still sound good in a mix? I doubt distortion after reverb.

It definitely will! Reverb before gain is really popular among the modern surf and shoe gaze crowds. Like everything, it all comes down to how you tweak them 👍
