@lilithlaney17593 жыл бұрын
I wish I could tell her otherwise. As a child who had neglectful parents it felt really validating to see a character who goes through the same struggles but isn't a giant tragedy case every second. It was empowering to see that she had friends and was loved regardless of her absent parents. Obviously the character isn't a shining example of overcoming the situation or anything like that but even just having a character like that was SO important to kids like me. I also struggled with anorexia and learning that Jeanette was going through that while playing the character made me feel even closer to her. Watching the show as an adult gets me choked up. Sam's character was canonically straight but I still took how she never backed down on her opinions and applied it to being a bi teenager in a small town in Texas too. So her character really helped me in more ways than one without needing to be a perfect role model.

Could also be that she gets what she can when she can because she’s not always been accustomed to regular meals due to her mother’s neglect. This is a woman who has a police record and drove after laser eye surgery. Regular trips to the grocery store probably weren’t a priority. Sam is always helping herself to the food at Carly and Spencer’s apartment, treats the place like home just as much as they do.

I actually learned a couple days ago that junk food is more accessible and affordable than healthy food. And since sam is clearly in a low-income household, that may also have something to do with it

Wendi Wasden From what we see of the stuff in Carly and Spencer’s kitchen it’s not the model of a healthy pantry, which makes sense from Spencer being a bit ditzy when it comes to regular household upkeep and his accidental pyromaniac tendencies. He had to channel his inner Rube Goldberg when the question was how to feed his fish. So perhaps Sam feels more affinity because while it’s not conventionally functional it’s a lot more functional than her own home. She also has a lot of to go food or eating out, again indicative of the financial and general state at home, since she’s not shown to be one to go for actually making anything. If it’s more than 30 seconds in the microwave she’d rather call for pizza on Spencer’s credit card.

The “I’m black” line got me, but seriously, how can people call other people racist for simply pointing out something about race? Racism is hate twords races not talking about them
@hollowgetsuga4254 жыл бұрын
Traditionally racism would be that tho there are many that are trying to change the definition to exclude most people from being racist by shoehorning in a power structure. The “black people cant be racist” idea for example is often used with their own new definition of racism that hinges racism upon institutional power. Meaning that if one race has more power than yours then you and your race cannot be racist against them. Which makes for some hilarious obviously racist scenarios that would no longer be considered racist under that nonsense but by and large the people pushing for that are the same people that (idk if you’ve seen it or not) are calling Black woman Candace Owens a white supremacist and Jewish Man Ben Shapiro a Nazi, so you wouldn’t really expect it to make sense. But man if you’re questioning how people can just call other people racist over something not racist you should’ve seen what I (half black) was being called when Black Panther and Get Out were huge and I didn’t like them as much as other people did 😂. There’s some crazy people out here.

Yeah, Sam’s dad left when she was young, and her mother was constantly in and out of prison, leaving Sam to have to rely on herself. And when Sam’s mom was home, she was typically on drugs, a negligent parent, and they never get along (to an extent where you could say her mother was emotionally , and even physically, as we see from Boomba and her literally sitting on Sam, abusive.) Her mom literally gave away her pet. In the show, Sam spends most of her time at Carly’s and even sleeps over there a lot. And at the end of the show, her mother doesn’t seem to care that Sam flat-out moves away without telling her or nearly anyone else. The rest of her relatives were also constantly in and out of prison, leaving her with only negative influences. I’m pretty sure Sam also mentions that her apartment was pretty run-down and not a nice place. Probably the only positive influence relative she had, Melanie, was constantly overshadowing her in everything, and moved out of the house when she was young so Sam rarely got to see her. Sam grew up in an environment void of love or any positive feelings, therefore teaching her the wrong way to express herself, and that the only way to get through to people was through negativity.

Details don't get added into stories for shits and giggles. If Sam was just "the mean one", there never would have needed to be mention of her home life, her mother never would have needed to appear in the show, they never would have gone to family therapy. The actual events of the show are just a backdrop, and the real meat of the story is in the development of the relationships between characters, their family members, and their authority figures. Sam and Freddy both could have been written as standard sitcom secondary characters, with no mention of or consideration for their lives outside of their interactions with Carly. That's basically how Gibby is written, that's how Tbow is written, but Sam and Freddy were both developed much further, and it wasn't an accident. They are complex so that complex themes involving their interpersonal relationships can be explored.

Yeah, but there are times in the show where I kinda wish Carly or anyone would put her foot down more with Sam, if ever her behavior got out of line. A good idea for an episode could have been maybe because Sam starts slacking off way too much. I mean for a girl who mooches off her friends and avoids getting a job or any work, you would think Carly would want to try and help her avoid this behavior since at times it causes trouble. We could have a conversation like this: Carly: Sam, for the past few months, I been pulling your weight because I thought you were cleaning you're act together. Sam: Why do I look for help when YOU pull my weight? Carly: So what you're saying is; I'm enabling you. Sam: You're not enabling me. You're simply "shielding me" from the consequences of my own self-destructive behavior. Carly: I think you're right. And I'm not gonna do it anymore. In fact, for your own good Sam, you're not allowed over in my place or to come and shoot videos. Sam: What?! Well, guess what? You can't kick me out because I am leaving. I don't need a friend telling me to pull my weight. I don't even need that jive. I can take care of myself! And the episode can end up with Sam on the streets, and ending up as a loser, and things get worst when she gets arrested and Carly decides to come back and help. But she asks Sam to look at her and ask if SHE wants it. Another example would be to have Sam's behavior cause a riff in choosing what is hers or what's close to her (her friends). An example would be her special remote she uses in the show, since it's the closest thing to a possession she is proud of having. Lets say for example, she starts being careless and ignorant, and because of it, her device gets destroyed. So now she begins to sulk for a few weeks, which annoys Carly and this conversation happens: Carly: Why can't you just get a normal one? Sam: Normal items are for normal people. I'm not normal! Carly: I'll give you that. Sam: You're my best friend and know me better than anyone. You see what a horrible person I am. That's why I have to have this! To distract the rest of the world from seeing my horrible self! So Carly suggest Sam get something even better. But when Sam does find one, she finds out it's gonna cost about $1,000 - $10,000. She of course asks Carly for the money, which Carly refuses. And Sam says, "But you're my best friend. That's what best friends do (Carly: No, they don't.).". Carly tells Sam that no one's going to simply give her that kind of money. So Sam goes to one of the other supporting characters in the show (I don't know who exactly since nobody is this naïve.), and asks them for the money which they agree, but Sam lies about what the money is for. The character is left nearly broke and while Sam is now enjoying herself, the character she took the money from is left miserable. Carly happens to check up on them and when learning that they gave up all their money to Sam, it leads to what will be a heinous confrontation and Sam being force to decide what to lose her new possession or her best friends. And my last idea is similar to the episode iGot a Hot Room, except this time what happens is Sam chooses to crash at someone else's place, probably Freddie or Gibby, and ends up turning the tables by leaving Gibby/Freddie in the guest room and taking over their bedroom, forcing them to do all the chores, and basically making them her servant. Soon when one of the characters learn about Sam's behavior and say, "What are you doing, letting Sam walk all over you like this? Put your foot down for once. Be a MAN.". And this gets Freddie/Gibby to stand up to Sam. In general, I find it hard at times why someone like Carly got her wagon hitched onto Sam. But hey, we're all people and we all can decide who we pick to hang with. But re-watching the show makes me think Sam owes a little more respect to Freddie or Carly, considering she lets Sam stay at her place. I know plenty of plenty of people like that. Some even use the excuse, "I don't live here. I'm just crashing here until I get back on my feet.". But people, when you crash somewhere for 3-5 years, you live there. And people like that aren't really your best friend. That's a terrible friend. And why you may ask? Because how many friends does Sam really have that we all can remember, besides Carly, Freddie, or any of the main cast? Because in hindsight, they're really all Sam has. And in life, if people aren't careful, soon you'll have no friends. And many today usually say, "Who needs friend?". Well someone with no girl/boyfriend, no job, no credit, no hobbies, and no class. And lets be honest, Sam is a couple of those things. When re-watching you kind of believe that Sam's nothing without Carly. And to all of you out there, the best advice I can give is to try harder to be a better friend to anyone. Try and give you best.

I remember that from the show! It's been a while since I've watched it but I do remember Sam mentioning family in jail A LOT. I'm pretty sure there was an episode where she and Freddie (when they dated) visited her uncle and cousin in jail. Pam probably learned it from her family too. I'm just wondering how her sister did not end up in jail. Like, almost every family member Sam mentions is in jail, has been arrested or is entirely messed up but Mellanie is entirely fine.

Chayenne Oosterveld It’s not impossible to turn out fine. People are not damned to be just like their family. It’s difficult growing up in those situations, making choices, and you may turn out just the same, but you don’t have to. There are plenty of people with messed up childhoods, plenty of hurt people who turn out just fine. Again, it not fair people treat others in these situations as though they’re damned. Doing so could create a self fulfilling prophecy where the person may start thinking you already think I’m a criminal so what’s the point of trying to be better? You already think I’m a failure, truant, etc so what’s the point in trying to prove you wrong? You shouldn’t do that to young people.

I mean, ultimately she’s a tragic character, kind of like Azula from Avatar, shitty home life created a shitty person. You can try to help her but you can’t fault others for not being able to handle her toxicity. If they deal with that abuse daily it’s hard to imagine being able to change her for the better. Mix that with the fact people are normally very protective of their personal identity, and you’ve got a uphill battle. Remember, even the littlest of offenses will make Sam react with violent or cruel actions, and even when she’s calm her standard choice of action includes violence bullying. Sam’s actions, while a reflection of how she was raised, will ultimately create others like her if they are tormented by her and look to her example. We can talk about how awful her mom was, and she was awful, but she would have had to have been a kid as well, imagine her childhood... And if you say her childhood doesn’t excuse what she’s done to Sam, Sam has little excuse for what she does to others.

Damn, i hadn't realized that Sam was the textbook stereotypical "black character", but played by a white girl
@CS-bk5ev4 жыл бұрын
I really don't think that's the case. Sam does not fit the "Black best friend" stereotype because her main purpose in the show is not to guide Carly by giving her advice with sass and attitude. Compared to Carly, Sam is not sassy at all and has issues of her own that are way messier. She doesn't really fit the "angry Black woman stereotype" either because she neither black nor an adult woman. Being aggressive, hostile, and physically intimidating are traits not exclusive to one race, especially since Sam's more antisocial characteristics are modeled by her neglectful mother. It's like saying that Freddie's an Asian stereotype just because he has an overbearing mother and is good with technology. Racial stereotypes just doesn't apply here because Sam's a bully, Freddie's a geek, and Carly's a nice girl, which are all common tropes in TV shows. And when it comes to food, it's clear that Sam likes American food of all kinds, not only fried chicken, as shown by the fact that she keeps ribs in her purse, eats half-eaten burgers out of the trash, has cereal during class, heats up meals in her locker, casually bites a salami stick in the school hallway, stuffs herself with meatballs in Carly's living room, constantly eats ham, and loves Fatcakes very much (and Canadian Fatcakes even more!). Plus she even orders Chinese food during a webcast, falls asleep while eating meat tamales in Carly's bed, and who could forget that she even orders a taco from the taco truck that hit Freddie! I personally think her low restraint when it comes to food stems from her pageant background, which might've involved some restrictive eating when she was just a child. Maybe this is why she declares that she loves fried chicken at the pageant she ends up winning in that one episode. Plus nutritious food may not have been readily available to her when she was a kid, which could explain her preference for junk food and processed meats as well as why Sam tries to take Carly's tuna sandwich by shoving her off the cafeteria bench when they were like 9 years old. Such a hilariously iconic moment that they became best friends after Carly stood her ground and pushed her back to get her sandwich back :D I'm really overthinking this, but I seriously doubt that Sam is a stand-in for a Black character.
@audramcdonaldapologist36764 жыл бұрын
C S She does fit the angry black woman stereotype though it's a stereotype that black women are violent and mean, and Sam's character was originally supposed to black, Sam also loves fried chicken which also a stereotype for black people and her mom is a single mom which is another stereotype not only that she gets arrested and takes drugs another stereotype for black people and Black mother's, Sam gets arrested a lot as mentioned in the video (again another stereotype) you wrote a whole essay and you're still in the wrong: loud and wrong! I'm assuming you aren't black but telling people to not get offended by something that obviously is, shows you're entitlement, it really isn't your place especially if you aren't from that ethnic group

@@audramcdonaldapologist3676 First I never said that you shouldn't be offended. Every perspective is valid, and I was just giving my perspective on a childhood show that our generation loved growing up! Opinions are subjective and there is no proof that Sam Puckett was originally supposed to be black. I always thought that Jeanette McCurdy was cast because she played essentially the same character on Zoey 101 in that one episode where she played Dustin's first girlfriend. Even Nathan Kress played a geeky character on Drake and Josh that has a crush on Megan in the Battle of Panthatar episode and that's what got him the audition for Freddie (the scene was cut because that episode air too close to the premiere of iCarly and the producers thought little kids would get confused). A similar thing could've happened with Jeanette McCurdy's audition process. I just think Sam was meant to be a polar opposite to Carly in terms of her personality, homelife, and girlyness. Not every aggressive character with a tramatic upbringing who likes meat is automatically black. I think it's problematic to assume she should have been or was intended to be black. Yes, she likes fried chicken, but there's a long list of meats and American junk food she eats throughout the series that makes it clear that she's "not like other girls." She never goes out of her way to eat watermelon or collard greens, so it's possible that the fried chicken connection was unintentional. The only thing we know for sure is that Sam can speak Italian, and the iCarly website used to say that she has Italian roots. Plus it's worth noting that Sam's only friend from juvie with a similar history to hers is white (from season 6) and the only friends she would pull pranks and get in trouble with in the first season were white as well. That being said, I acknowledge that season 1 iCarly definitely did have minor charactors that embodied racial stereotypes, like the black kid who wouldn't stop beatboxing in the detention episode and the loud black girl who was dancing with Gibby on the tables at the Cheesecake Wearhouse date. Those have not aged well, and I hope Nickelodeon has come a long way since then when it comes to representation

It seems like a pretty common thing in Dan Schneider shows to have at least one character that has the habit of making really bad choices they often don't see enough consequences for, and even when they do they keep doing the same things over and over again with little development on a grander scale. Zoey 101 had Logan, and probably the biggest example is Drake from Drake & Josh, who was objectively a pretty douchey and manipulative person but all that was downplayed because of how funny he was and how his dynamic with Josh was distracting in its entertainment value.

I actually adore Sam from a personality perspective. She's practically an overshield from the halo games. She's angry and abrasive because she's weak on the inside, she hurts things to keep them down so they can stay with her. She acts like she feels her mother is all she really deserves, so there really isn't bad blood between them. But she met Carly, someone who has a great brother, has a lot of resources, gives her the freedom she wants, and Fred is the typical punching bag that is smart enough to help everyone, and while you consider being a punching bag being awful... At least he wasn't getting played like Carly did to him. There are a lot of characters that these kids shows make that really make you wonder who wrote them... I wish I could give them a hug or something. Because some of the stuff is real heavy.

Sams physical and sexual abuse of Freddie was not okay especially since early on she called Freddie her "Friend" and Carly is just as bad for not putting her foot down too much at Sam's abuse of Freddie and others yeah
@Xedhadeaus3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewmann8969 I'll give you that, But personally I would rather take a dysfunctional beatdown from Sam knowing she cares about me, instead of watching Carly kind of just let Freddy sit in limbo for even longer than the main series. He needed to save her life just for her to even care, and even inside of that, she didn't really care about him, she cared about her being with him because he saved her. I perfectly understand how you feel, but after all the fruitless tropes of women beating on men for absolutely nothing, I'm perfectly okay with Sam bullying everyone around her as a character.
@matthewmann89692 жыл бұрын

I do feel after she became roommates with Cat her behavior calmed down a lot, she was way less violent than she was. She quite violent, but she didnt put others at risk. She put herself at risk. Like in the fish pool motercycle thing, she was terrified about Cat doing it and she really badly wanted to do it for Dice to raise money or something. She only hurt people if they were mean. Like the crazy psychopath girl, or the lying babysitters. She never tried to hurt Cat, Dice or Nona on purpose bc she had a bright air headed roommate to keep her in line. Cat stopped Sam from doing a lot of hurtful stuff, and Cat was always so ''dumb'' that Sam learned to be more patient with people. Cat really helped Sam's behavior. When Blue Dog was banned before Sam would beat up the guy who banned it or try everything in her power to get it illegally, but she decided to try make it and was very smart in not getting in trouble. I feel like Carly always kinda took care of Sam and she was like her role model, with Cat Sam kinda had to take care of Cat. The only males in her life was a 12 year old kid and a dumb air headed man, like Cat. She also was taking care of children, she literally was a Mama to many so she knew she couldnt act like a violent child anymore.

i remember loving sam when i was growing up 'cause i related to her a lot. i recognized she came from a similar kind of broken home as me and it was nice to see a girl being so strong, loud, brave, and independent despite (or maybe, because of) it. double points for her being pretty and having a girly side, not just a short haired tomboy with internalized misogyny that gets hives from the color pink. obviously she's no role model, and i knew that, but for someone who internalized my neglect/abuse in a way that made me a meek doormat, sam was basically my power fantasy. i really needed that back then and i still appreciate it to this day, even if some of the stuff she did was a bit...well, problematic.

She actually has more female friends . There was the girl that she was friends with before she went to juvenile hall and it was shown that they had smash parties at abandoned houses . Her influences before she met carly where all bad , it was way more then just a bad home life . She hung out with a bad crowd as well . Even after Icarly ended you say she mellowed out even though she really didn't . Look at the sam and cat episode where soda was outlawed and she made a brewery in the house .She still tended to scam people in Sam and cat and she still continued to beat people with the butter sock . Which is also why she is seen as a kind of comedy relief even though the things she did and went through are serious , she never hit someone with a pipe or a brick .She hit them with a sock full of butter . Much like something the three stooges might do.

When you think about it, Sam is extremely similar to Helga from Hey Arnold. The most obvious similarity between them is that they’re violent and rude to others around them. Also, they both have a pretty bad home life. The only difference is that we actually see Helga’s parents regularly as opposed to through anecdotes and a single episode appearance, and that Helga lives with both of her parents. You somehow forgot to mention Melanie, but that reminded me even more of Helga. Both Sam and Helga have “perfect” sisters that are smarter and more valued by their parents. Sam has Melanie, and Helga has Olga. The only major difference here is that Sam and Melanie are twins, while Olga is much older than Helga. This may be stretching it a bit with the similarities, but they also seem to be abusive to their crushes in order to hide that they have a crush on them. With Helga, it’s dead obvious that she has a crush on Arnold. It’s mentioned in next to every episode. With Sam, it’s never fully expressed that she really has any major crushes throughout the series. However, considering the fact that she ended up kissing Freddie (the second time, not the first time) and started dating him, she would’ve had to have had a secret crush on him. She just hid it by being excessively rude and violent to Freddie, just like Helga did with Arnold. They’re not completely similar though. Helga doesn’t ever fully break the law or get arrested, whereas Sam does all the time.

I am seriously worried how a child like Sam was not taken away by cps. Isn’t that what they’re there for? By our knowledge, Sam is barely fed, barely taken care of and her mom just has a parade of men come by her house. We don’t know when Melanie went off to boarding school either. Their basic needs weren’t even met. It was never explained why Sam didn’t have lunch the day she met Carly but her home life doesn’t give any good options. It was always played off as laughs but one striking line for me was when Sam defends her appetite by saying “my mom makes me dinner like twice in a year” A year is 365 days. Her mom only makes her food for 2 days. What has she been doing the other 363 days?!?? That is frightening to imagine. I mean, Sam as a teenager is fine for someone in her situation. She always has food at Carly’s house, it’s basically her 2nd home at the point but what about before the age of 8?
