Roth isn't a technical singer but he owns this song (with help from M.A. on those punches) Love seeing somebody appreciate "Fair Warning". A lot of people called it weak, 'too dark'. Me, it's my favorite VH album start to finish
@teeoh91922 жыл бұрын
DLR has never sounded better than when he does that middle eight, "You can try me at home..."part! There's an isolated track video on YT where you can REALLY hear how good he sounds. Too bad he didn't take live singing as seriously as he did in the studio...

There was a guy in youtube that cut together all of Roth's high pitched screams. Sound pretty awesome. A sober studio Roth is unmatched.

The clean guitar intro is using an old MXR pedal. Either a phaser or flanger. Back then the frequency response would drop low when the pedal was activated just due to technological limitations of guitar pedals of the 1970's.

My cousins, in Detroit, introduced me to Van Halen when I was 12 (1980). I was taking Banjo lessons at the time and was more into music that would be called "Pop" today (Shawn Cassidy/Beach Boys, etc...). The first time I heard Van Halen it was all over. I instantly fell in love. When Women and Children First came out I knew I was on the right path and when Fair Warning Came out I knew within my soul that I wanted to Rock and Roll and not just any old rock and roll. I wanted the cutting edge bad ass rock and roll!!!

Fair Warning album is heavy John Coltrane influenced. Gotta love those usual constant vocal harmonies, also! Van Halen were very intriguing to me in how they never seemed to be confused where to go musically or why. They all came up with big band, jazz, swing musicians in the family. I recognized early how they would always put a couple of songs that were "nod to the old school". They were a stellar production. They were utmost professionals of their craft, I understand the only thing that got hurt was some people's feelings.
