I found a nice apartment for a month in Paris--pre Airbnb. I had been backpacking for 3 years with my wife. And so I'm not a total newbie. But Paris is scammy. Luckily, I found an amazing place that was every tourist's idea of the ideal apartment. It was the apartment of an art dealer who worked exclusively in rare posters from the turn of the century. She was British, though her last name suggested a German heritage. So my one bit of advice: Try to rent off a foreigner. They decorate in a way that perpetuates the fantasy. Also, there was nothing shady about her.

The biggest thing (that Cheryl ran into) is that you either need a full year's rent in the bank - an account you can freeze and give the keys to your landlord - or a guarantor who makes an absurd amount of money (something like 40x the rent - not sure on this number but it is high).
