I would get a check on your engine and transmission. Do a Blackstone analysis of your fluids to detect anything suspicious. This worries me since the owner took such poor care of the camper he probably ignored his maintenance too.

Take your propane tank to a propane place and have it tested, inspected and recertified before restoration.
@Mark-gg6iy
@Mark-gg6iy 3 күн бұрын
Correct. If the tank is recertified, with handheld wire brushes remove all scale. You do not need to get down to bare, shiny metal. Prep the tank by removing all dirt, debris, petroleum, and any other substances other than the tank's paint coating and metal. Then paint the tank using a brush with Blue Steel. One coat will last many years neutralizing ferrous (steel) metal corrosion. Use a small container of White Out (cap brush included) to highlight the cert. date stamping and relevant ID.

@@narrowroad-traveler Yes, I own one. In this case the original cert. date needs to be highlighted. Remember, you don't just do these things for yourself you do them to increase value. I did not know that no recert. is required so thanks for that. I am experienced with pressurized tankage and am unaware of any national/state standard on any tankage that does not require periodic inspection and certification but after all this is the USA.

You may be doing structural damages if you plan on totally gutting this. As I've mentioned before, your bathroom wall, refrigerator wall & some others actually stabilize your roof & walls. If this were an aluminum structure, like an Airstream or Silver Streak, those can be gutted as they are built with ribs & beams. Most fiberglass motorhomes do not have that kind of stability. This is different than a bus or van build.

I agree to an extent, however, on these smaller class B’s the outside walls aren’t put up after a shower is installed. This is a seamless class B mentioned previously and why she wanted to choose this style because of the less likely chance of leaks. Now she didn’t account for mice or vent holes but she did so here she is.

I think you have two things to consider…. The “creep” factor and costs. Right now I think the creep factor is weighing heavier than the cost. Every time you open something up, it’s filled with nasty stuff. You’ve done your best to clean it up and disinfect it but… it will always feel creepy. Gut it and then you know all is clean and there are no surprises. Plus all the cabinetry will match and be up to date. Good luck with the build. I admire your skill and ambition! 👍

I work at the Sherwood, Oregon Home Depot Paint Dept.and was a lifelong painting contractor. Kilz 2 is the wrong primer for stopping odors. All the acrylic based primers are permeable and can let odors through. Far better would be the Original Kilz, which is a fast dry oil primer, or if you want to stay with a water based primer, Restoration, which is an water based epoxy. The very best is BIN white pigmented shellac, but it is up around $80 per gallon! Should you want advice on paints, primers or wood finishes, feel free to drop in or call and ask for Dave Jensen. I have also owned multiple RV's over the last 40 years and enjoyed remodeling and improving them.

@@sigreddasparks16 shellac is not generally used as an exterior primer. The product you are using as a finish coat will probably recommend which type of primer to use in your situation. In my opinion, I know that it's easy for me to say, but I think that since you've come this far, I think that you should gut the whole thing so that you can do it the way you want. You can put your own touches on the van. I know it's gonna be a lot more expensive but in the end you'll make it your own. Plus since you're gonna be taking Ember with you on your journeys, it'll be safer cause you know what you have. Anyway, like I said, it's easy for me to say. But, regardless, whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll make the right decision. In saying that, I'm really enjoying your journey and looking forward to each new video. Remember young lady, you do you!

Key points about propane tank lifespan: 12-year lifespan: Most propane tanks, including those used in campers, have a lifespan of 12 years from the manufacture date. Inspection after 12 years: After 12 years, the tank needs to be inspected by a qualified technician to determine if it can be requalified for further use. Check the manufacture date: The manufacturing date is usually stamped on the tank collar, which allows you to calculate when it needs to be replaced.

I see a lot of comments suggesting you take down walls and open up the ceiling. I can sort of understand where the thought process is BUT.... My question is: If you get mice in your house or your cabin do you take all the walls out? Every house in America would have been stripped down to the studs if that were the case. I live in a cold winter area and a lot of people store their RV's over the winter, A LOT of them get mice and i can assure you that they aren't all taking down walls or ceilings.

Will you get a ROI? - If you want a home for you and your daughter, then make what you want.. Spend the time and money. If after seeing what needs to happen and it doesn't meet your needs for now, I say fix and sell and move on. Either way, you can do it and make your long-term goals happen. Chalkbit up to experience. I am a little confused as to what you will do with the van, You had said it was going to be your home so I assumed you would be living in it on the road and in that case I would want it gutted and rebuilt before I hit the road, I think though maybe you are going to use it as a travel van just going to maybe Texas to visit family and maybe friends and then coming back to the house to stay a while. You said you would have Ember a while and then bring her back to Issac. I think Issac said in a video not long ago that Ember still gets sick in a car so how will that work. Maybe it is just me but I keep hearing different things about how you will use it. Enjoy watching the build.

With that being said though, are you really sure you want to risk that there's more than likely water damage in the insulation, old electrical wires that could be stripped and could start a fire, propane hoses that are rusted and will start to leak, etc that will cost you more money and time later on. Good luck, and we're all rooting for you!

#1 Depends on the wall construction, if it’s solid foam, I imagine there can be no rodent issues in the wall… so if it’s solid foam I’d leave it alone. #2 You need to remove all the carpet so there is only wood left, then completely sand all the wood down and use enzyme cleaner and lastly use a paint sealer to seal the entire floor. #3 You need to keep in mind how the structure of the roof and walls are supported and not mess with that. #4 sit down and draw out a plan taking into account what you have and where everything will go, frig spot still looks good and think about battery and inverter placement. #5, I’ve not really seen bathroom, but is there any space where rodents could go? If so, remove to clean it all out, #6 your in deep now and need are so close to having it all gutted. I think the walls would not have rodent issues as they should be foam sandwiched with metal….

Oops I meant to comment and not reply. So here it goes again. In my opinion, and I know it's easy for me to say, but I think you should gut the whole thing. I know it's gonna be a lot more expensive but this way, you'll know what you're getting. Plus it'll be safer cause your gonna be taking Ember with you on your journeys. Regardless, I know you'll make the right decision. I'm really enjoying your journey watching the build. Remember, you do you young lady. Take care

Yikes!! That's a really tough question for us! I think I would break my decision down into these questions: 1. Has the engine/mechanical been checked out and are you all clear there? (I.e. mice infestation in engine, chewed wires, etc.) 2. How long are you planning on you and Ember truly living in this RV? You haven't been on the road in a few years so what's the end goal with this rig? 3. For the health and safety of Ember, and knowing mice will infest EVERYWHERE, I don't know that I would want her living in there without a gut just to make sure you have covered everything. It's a lot of work and more money than you planned but if you're planning for this to be a long-term home, it's worth it. ❤

Even though this is a massive undertaking for you, I’m sure if anyone can bring this van back to life, it’s you. I just keep thinking about the other lady who wanted it too. As devastating as this is she would have been sunk not having your experience of rebuilding. Too bad you can’t recoup some of your investment by contacting the previous owner. After all he advertised something that it wasn’t.

The extensive build and the lack of a thorough inspection before purchasing is not showing great judgment. The cost associated with it are way over the value of the RV. Estimating the cost of RV and all the new appliances it would be around $40,000. You can buy a much newer RV without all the issues. I have helped a half a dozen friends purchase RVs, but the only way I would agree to help was that a qualified pre-inspection was done. The cost for those inspections averaged $225 dollars each. A couple of the buyers turned down a purchase after the inspection was done, and they moved on and kept looking. After one inspection showing several issues, the price was negotiated down 1/3 from the original price. $225 is cheap and would have saved thousands on this RV. You can find inspectors in most locations that can do the inspection prior to traveling across the country to make a purchase. With all that being said, I’m sure it will turn out well, especially if the demo stops and the installation starts.

@@The-Real-MrCaphind sight dear. I mean she knows she fd up not getting it inspected and won't make that mistake again. What's done is done. Now that being said if the engine is all good and she thinks it's going to last for years to come, since she's gone this far already I would say gut it completely and make it fresh and new with no worries about diseases and such from the mice. She can style it the way she likes and have peace of mind knowing it's safe for her and her daughter.

I would check behind those walls just to take a peek if they be damaged or have bug pooh them you might want to redo. So there is a path you can take. The path would be the way of the Amish.. let me explain the Amish community helps each other out to rebuild barns or to have tests done. So insane this I would say make a massive post to your fan base of people in the area. Carpenters Engineers Builders Fabricators whoever wants to volunteer their time and resources. I believe there's a lot of people that would help you. I know you want to do this all by yourself but sometimes you just can't. I would host an event where you would bring the van into an area and literally have a team of people come in and do what they do best and you can have everything done literally by the end of the day. That would make a really fantastic Community video to show on your Channel. And really all you have to do is maybe provide drinks and pizza. This is volunteer your time and resources only not payment type of thing. It is possible you might get 3 months work done in a weekend. And you would have content for weeks just a thought

Seriously reconsider the restoration of your Propane Tank and here is why. Propane tanks are pressure certified for a certain number of years, beyond that date many will refuse to refill the tank unless they have been re-certified. It may vary from state to state. If you ran out of propane you could be in quite a fix. So please check the rules before you proceed. The Tanks DO RUST from the inside out, hence the pressure testing and certification. It is for your safety as well as those nearby your vehicle. There are places that just refuse to refill tanks on older motorhomes and that is why. As to what to do, I would stop right where you are, cutting the costs. Your appliances will have to be replaced where they currently sit because of the fiberglass and for esthetic reasons. WIll give you a much higher resell appreciation than something people would know does not provide the fit and finish of a factory job. Your down time would be far less, and a full bathroom job is very, very pricey, so it what is there is fine for your needs, stick with it, as replacing faucets etc is very easy, as well as the toilet. That said, I would recommend a very thorough inspection of the area to insure there is no wood rot. You still could mdify the existing layout as you orginally figured you were goingto do and customize it to your needs, colors, etc. Chin up! it will be worth it, as you know well there is a high market for those units Use that to your advantage.Keep your eye on the goal.

I would say, keep it if it works so you can save money and stick to your budget. I'd keep the upper cabinets, and redo the bottom. If it all is functional, you'll save money now. You can get it fixed up and running, and then replace things later if you feel it doesn't work. But in the end, it depends on your budget and vision. I have a similar Campervan that is from 2001. I'm looking at your ideas. Thank you for putting this build online. It is giving me ideas. No matter what you decide, I will want to watch it. Keep going!

The saying-If it's not broken, don't fix it. The upper cabinets add character and conversation to the build. Only thing I would think of changing is the propane tank. I would replace them with 2 smaller ones. Tanks that are easier to fill and remove (if needed). Good luck with whatever you decide.

Rebuild or not to rebuild.. Upper existing cabinets are pretty similar so if the existing cabinets are structurally sound & there is no odor I would leave them. To tear them out only to rebuild something similar to a waste of time & money. Good time todo pre-wiring & pre-plumbing though. All the best & I enjoy your videos.

I suggest putting your bed/couch in the back. That way you can leave it made up as a bed if you wish. If you put the back of it on a side, you will still have access to the back door when it is made up. I like having a bed I do not have to put away to use the rest of the van. I would put a table and benches and kitchen towards the front. Maybe even front seats that can turn around.

That decision should actually depend on what your long-term plans are for this unit. Are you keeping it long term or, are you getting rid of it in a few years? If it's something you feel you can build into your ideal RV, then by all means, proceed with a total gut. If not, put it back together, enjoy it for a while and then move on to a project that is more of what you want and won't mind investing money into.

If this is going to be a longterm home, spend the extra time to gut the whole thing. Starting fresh is the healthiest choice I think. But have you done a full mechanical inspection on it yet?? That would be the financial choice for me - if you need to spend some $$ on mechanical, save your $$ on the build and call the demo "done" now.

I'm of the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!". You only overpaid for the RV because it was misrepresented that everything was in working order. I disagree, she has Ember to consider. She has to have a bathroom. I don’t think she will be happy in the end if she doesn’t gut it. She’s gone this far, if she truly wants the peace of mind knowing it’s as clean as she can get it, there’s no other choice. It needs to be gutted down to the bear walls. Also. I’ve been watching Jalena long enough to know she won’t be happy with mis matched cabinetry. She likes decorative clean cohesive design. If she doesn’t do it all the way, she will regret it in the end. Gutting it and doing a total rebuild is the safest and best choice for her and Ember.

I agree with the saying if it ain't broke don't fix it, but then again you need to look at what you've gotten and what you're finding as you go along. It seems that the more you have to tear out the more you find rat infestation or mice infestation, do you really want to cover all of that up and leave that behind when the rest of your build is new or do you want to get rid of everything so that you have a fresh start on a fresh home? That's a question only you can answer I would be hard pressed to not finish ripping it out when I know what has been found. But then again I know money is an issue also

Now that the propane tank is empty, I would put tape or caps on the propane tank to prevent moisture or dust from getting inside. Also, it would be a good idea to check the refrigerator size to make sure it fits. The heat from the frig and motor need a place to escape from the cabinet the refrigerator is in so it doesn't get hot inside the cabinet because it will reduce efficiency and shorten the life of the refrigerator..

Think about how lo g you want to keep it in terms of how big Ember will bea and when will it no longer serve you space-wise. And mechanical will go at some point and you don't want to be replacing all that under hood or you will be so much overspent you'll not recoup as much of your total spend. Plus, life happens and in today's world I don't think we can plan as far ahead as we used to be able to. You know? So my vote is to stop here on demo.

The Chinook is supposed to be a quality built, 3 Seacons RV isn't it? Which is obvious because it's kicking your butt to tear it apart. Do not gut the walls unless you see evidence of water damage, which would mean possibly mold. I say keep going as you are, gut every inch of that carpet. Do not leave any of it. Buy two 12v chests, one for freezer & one for frig. Build shelves for them in that frig spot with slide out drawers & you will probably have space above for another storage shelf. I hate RV frigs. They are too shallow & freezer way too small. I always had to have an extra cooler just for drinks. Get a deep sink so u can wash out a shirt if you want or a big cooking pot or whatever. My 3rd RV had one big deep sink, it was very useful. Killz every sq inch of the inside of this RV, finish it like you are going to flip it, but live in it for awhile to fine tune it. Then sell it & find something else to gut, IF you want to do it again.

My gut in this case is telling me that you should take as much out so that you can have the confidence in the build quality and that everything is as air tight and pest free as possible. Spending 19k on this is like getting a super good deal on a newer but used cargo van but with more space. Yes this is a little more work but again, for you and Ember to live in this rig full time, you wanna make sure everything is completely solid. I'm still demoing and patching my bus right now so i know how much demo sucks. Lol. But we have to push through because it's so totally gonna be worth it in the end.
