Good to see a ‘historical’ movie review from you. It’s almost half lifetime away for me. Interesting to see what a trained history student notices in a movie. I’m sure there must be a lot more that did not make it to the video. Once in while you should do movie reviews like this. The caves discussed here are Kanheri caves in Mumbai, close from film city in Aarey colony. BTW still waiting for your episodes about Pratihar-Pala-Rashtrakuta dynasties.

@@dwijgurram5490 don’t write fiction. Ashoka’s father was Bindusara and his mother is of royal descent from a neighbouring state. I think you’re confusing with KrishnaDevaRaya, whose mother was of lower status. Ashoka, was ugly and filled with insecurities. He was neglected by his father and brothers. So he had to kill his brothers and claim the throne. KrishnaDevaRaya had similar issues. Many did not respect him due to his mother’s lower status. But he claimed the throne and indulged in a lot of culture, conquest proving himself worthy. So Ashoka was not remotely shudra. He had other challenges.

LOL. SANSKRIT was created to distort the meaning of pali. Landuism is nothing more than stolen goods market trying to selling sex slavery and communism to SC/ST/OBC masses . Temples, language, customs, art, sciences, mathematics and everything else was stolen from Buddhists. Kalidasa himself said that he is a contemporary to Vikramaditya of 12th century, then why do OC idiots still teach in classrooms that he was from 4-5th century bc???? And since timeline doesn't match, Today they created another fictional story for this same vikramaditya and made him a mythical king from 1BC. India could only be united by Buddhist kings, and not even one Hindu king could achieve this task. Because no country can stay in power when 70% of the population are tortured raped and cannibaIzed on daily basis.

Ashok movie was inaccurate- 1- Ashok wasn't handsome unlike SRK. 2- Ashok wasn't favoured by Bindusara because of his ugly appearance. 3- He didn't wear Kala tika. He had a proper wardrobe of a prince. 4- Radhagupta, son/grandson of Chanakya was instrumental in Ashok's rise. 5- Sushima was a handsome and favoured son of Bindusara. 6- Karuwaki not Kaurwaki was second wife of Ashok and she was not from Kalinga. No evidences are available to prive it. 7- A merchant's daughter from Vidisha was Ashok's paramour or wife who gave birth to his children Mahendra and Sanghamitra. She was first love of Ashoka. 8- Ashok's favourite wife was Asandhimitra not Karuwaki. All literary sources credit Asandhimitra having influence on Ashok. She was his Agramahishi (Chief Queen) and her death was a big blow to Ashok's heart. 9- Ashok's next favourite wife and chief queen was Tisyarakshita. Romila Thapar and some other scholars are of the view that Karuwaki and Tisyarakshita were same women but bo concrete evidences are available to prove it. 10- Ashok employed Yavanas in his service. Tushaspha or Tusharsphena was a Yavana governor of Ashok im Saurashtra. 11- Ashok didn't renounce violence at all. In literary records he is called one of the most cruel kings and that too Buddhist texts which he patronized. 12- Ashok married Tisyarakshita when she was a young woman and Ashok was in his 70s or 80s. She lusted after his handsome son Kunal, born from his wife Padmavati but when he rejected Tisyarakshita, she blinded him. Ashok burned Tisyarakshita alive for this heinous act but died heartbroken few years after.

The issue with Bollywood movies is that the makers neglect to conduct even basic research. For instance, if you were to ask someone to name Akbar's wife, they would likely say Jodha Bai. However, in reality, Akbar did not have a wife named Jodha. Princess Harka Bai (aka Heer Kunwari) of Amber was the one who married Akbar. Jay should be on the censor board which screens a historical drama.

Fun Fact- Ashok's favourite and most beloved wife was Asandhimitra not Karuwaki. He calls her his second wife in his inscription not Agramahishi. It is also possible her name was later inscribed by Karuwaki herself as Governor of Kaushambi was confused who was Ashok's second queen. The whole love story is a big lie. The evidences of love story of Ashok are with two women, Mahadevi Vidisha Shakya Kumari and Agramahishi Asandhimitra. With Tisyarakshita it was mostly lust and comfort in old age and she took massive advantage of Ashok's dependence and affections towards her.

I love this video as I have seen many western movie breakdowns like this and am very interested in Indian history but a suggestion to general indian audience the default when watching a movie one should understand it is for entertainment and leisure if you were taking your history from movies it is not the movies fault all fiction movies are fake nobody in their right mind would believe the movie 300 or Abraham lincoln vampire hunter as history. ALL MOVIES are fake unless they specifically claim to be docu film criticisms against films like Jodha Akbar and Ahsoka for accuracy are pointless in saying it is a good or bad movie. THIS VIDEO IS VERY ENJOYABLE AND videos like this are fun it doesn't mean the movie was bad as a movie.

The exterior shot of the "Vidisha" cave is that of Cave No. 3 at Kanheri, Mumbai. The tall Buddha statue is also from the verandah of this cave. It makes sense why the film-makers opted for Caves that are so close to Film-City and under ASI control, so access to general public can be easily managed. Film-making is an artistic endeavour with commercial bottomlines to meet. Historical accuracy may be sacrificed in favour of convenience or keeping the budget low. Their target audience is not Historians but the general public, who just need to see an ancient structure to transport their imagination to olden times that they do not know much about. I don't think Historians should lose sleep over such inaccuracies unless they cause inadvertent / intentional harm.

Jay, another reason for Ashoka in the victory procession to not ride a horse but to be in a chariot would be that horses used to be much smaller, similar to mules. Only in the last thousand years horses have become much bigger. That is why heavy cavalry only became a thing in middle ages, and prior to that horses were either used in light cavalry or chariots.

This was a film and not a documentary programme. In films the stories are slightly altered to make it pleasant and watchable to the viewers. If the entire historical story appears as it was, nobody would watch it. You need to appreciate the hard work behind making a historical film rather than criticizing it. Even the historical text about the Emperor from different sources do not agree with each other and there are confusions. So why a film cannot have wrong information. Another thing, our text Wansattapakasini mentions that Asoka's mother was Dharma, a Mauryan Princess , whom King Bindusara has married from Champa Same text mentions that King Chandragupta has married his maternal uncle's daughter who has fled with his mother when the Chandragupta's father was killed. So she also seems to have been a Maurya or a Sakyan as Mauryans were also Sakyans and used marry among themselves. If we check the legends of Sakyans now living in Burma and Bangaladesh region, they mention that during Sakya massacre some Sakyans have fled to east adn it is highly possible Dharma was a daughter of one of these Mauryan families as Wansatapakasini correctly mentions it. Further down our Mahavamsa, Wansattapakasani also mention that Emperor Asoka's Queen Wedisa Devi was a daughter of a family of Sakyans who have fled to Avanti also during Sakyan Massacre, during Lord Buddha's time So Chandragupta, Bimbisara as well as Asoka all have married Queens with Sakyan blood as them selves. Further information comes form Sri Lankan legends and chronicles. Brothers of this Sakya Wedisa Devi eight princes were sent to Sri Lanka with the sacred Bodhi Sapling and these families still continue to live here

They may wrote that as they think But his real name is Asoka not ashoka In dhamma lipi Hindus say brahmi script Shila shashan rock carvings found wrote as asoka Not only him many buddist kings names not as they pronounce in sanskrit or Hindi or any Indian language Atleast historians use real names instead of hindu sanskritised names

How about the depiction of alcohol shops in films like Bahubali & asoka? They often serve as settings for song and dance sequences. Are there any ancient sources that describe how these establishments appeared and functioned?

@@BhagyalaxmiKumari-vb4ub I'm aware they obviously existed in the past. But as for the hefty tax, where did you dig that up? Ancient India isn't your next-door neighbor, one needs to be precise about the time period, specific location, applicable areas, sources, and contextual details when discussing such topics.

The name Asoka written in Brahmi is found on few stone inscriptions. What is the prakrit/Brahmi pronunciation of Asoka? You are basing your argument on Sanskrit pronunciation which is not correct because Asoka used prakrit(not Sanskrit) for his rock edicts.

No Hindi movie or TV serial has been historically accurate in its depiction of ancient Bharata. Only one notable exception - Chanakya serial (original one directed by CP Dwivedi). In that also however, there is excessive nationalism and sloganeering.
