You're correct, the song is about a woman going through a divorce. The reason the song works so well is that we all knew that Agnetha (the singer) and Bjorn (the guy without the beard) were indeed going through a divorce at the time. (the other couple, Frida and Benny) were also married briefly at the time but divorced soon after. Bjorn, her husband, wrote the lyrics for his soon to be ex-wife to sing, quite something when you think about it. The lyrics are quite cold and unemotional, but Agnetha manages to supply all the emotion the song needs, especially her final wailing "The Winner takes it aaaalll....." It's a beautiful song, was a huge No 1 over here in the UK, and re-established Abba at the top after a year or two when they had been *slightly* less successful (though still managed a string of Top Ten hits, just didn't hit No 1). This song, followed by Super Trouper (single) were Abba's last big hits before they took a break for 40 years, and then returned with Voyage, no band that I can think of has done that before, 40 years is a very long time...
@rollomaughfling3802 жыл бұрын
They were separating at the time Björn wrote it (with Benny), but he's denied it's about the divorce, saying "it's fiction," and "the words in the song should not be taken literally."
@sophiapangloss21492 жыл бұрын
@@rollomaughfling380 Of course, I've seen Bjorn say that, and there may be some truth in it, but it can't be denied that the lyrics are very relateable to most people, because it's a very common and human situation. It would be difficult not to put some of your own perceptions and emotions into writing a song like that. Even if there was no 'handshake', even if there was no "I don't wanna talk" I still think some of the emotion in the song works because it is genuine and honest. I think Bjorn would have to say it's not literal, to protect their own psyches and privacy. Whether it's fiction or not, I'm glad he wrote it anyway.
@rollomaughfling3802 жыл бұрын
@@sophiapangloss2149 "Some truth?" So . . . you know, better than him, I guess? 👀
@sophiapangloss21492 жыл бұрын
@@rollomaughfling380 No of course not... but he couldn't really say anything else. Of course the words, the lines sung, are not their own words, I''m sure all relationships are much more complicated than lyrics in a song can ever communicate, but there's an authenticity about the emotions involved in a break-up that I have rarely ever 'felt' from a song in the same way, I think that's what I mean.
@rollomaughfling3802 жыл бұрын
@@sophiapangloss2149 He said what he needed to say, because of people in the press and public picking it apart based on news reports, and that should be enough. And those *were* his own words, which he literally called "fiction". Doesn't help anyone for people to keep trying to pick their situation apart decades later. This is the rub: great songcraft attempts to make lyrics universal, so everyone can project their own experiences onto them. Yet, the listener translating their own experiences onto what one might imagine the artist was going through, especially based on media reports is fraught. Lyrics that are too-specific to the songwriter's own experience are most often lost to time, and end up in the bargain bin, at best. This is why most great songwriters will tell you (and honestly and accurately so) that the lyrics are an amalgamation of different experiences. Anyone with a hit song saying otherwise either has a sharp agenda, or is playing up the press accounts with cynicism, which is not at all like Björn. It's a great song, it resonates universally, and I take the man at his word.

As a divorced woman I can tell you that this is the MOST accurate songs about this I've ever heard, it's strange thing in my case that my Mum who divorced my father in 1971 related to this just as much as I do (divorced in 2010) the "Gods" in this case being Judges in divorce & custody battles. It's heartbreakingly relatable no matter what year you listen to it. Although I do not regret mine, there's just something about this particular song that brings all that pain back to the surface....😪

I can relate too. My parents divorced in 1981 and I did in 2018. This song could make me cry any time. 😢

I can relate TOO with my own divorce from the love of my life, that I never saw coming after 24 years of marriage and 6 years before that, plus we had 3 children together. I cry every time I hear ABBA sing this, or when I watch the movie for "MAMA MIA" when Meryl Streep sings it, she does such a heartbreaking version of it. I could have written the lyrics to this, because it explains exactly how I feel. After more than 25 years after, I am still having trouble "getting over " it, and now he is deceased, 4 years ago. I don't think I will ever heal from it.

My dad used to play Abba on long trips, mostly the upbeat one but I also recall him playing this and cried when the line "The God's may throw a dice, their mind's as cold as ice, and someone way down here, loses someone dear." Looking back I was one big emotional kid for that line to hit me so deep. Abba are in my list of faves. I'm a new fan to your channel and love how eclectic your choices are. Good choice bro.

"The winner takes it all" is one of the best songs of the iconic Swedish group ABBA is the best example of how They can perfectly combine sad and melancholic lyrics with more upbeat melodies or rhythms and catchy choruses. And in this exceptional case with a luxury vocal performance by the blonde singer Agnetha as lead voice. If you're going to show him more ABBA songs, with the example of their universal classic Dancing Queen, my suggestion is that you add to the list "Waterloo" at Eurovision in UK 1974, for him to see how ABBA was born to world fame I hope to see you in more ABBA videos My best regards to both from Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷 South America

I loved Abba so much. Many radio DJs at the time were very critical of their music because it wasn't what they were used to but in fact they are brilliantly written, much more complicated than some people realised. I was also impressed by the fact that at that time they didn't actually speak English naturaly, it was their second language, being Swedish.

@norman smithers I don't know if I'd go as far as saying that ABBA "dominated" the 70s in quite the same way the Beatles did in the 60s .. But they were certainly in the very top handful of artists based on record sales of that era, and their popularity and legacy are still extremely strong today . I love their music so much !
@wayne_twentyfive2 жыл бұрын
@norman smithers We clearly have different ideas about what it means to "dominate" .. The musical and cultural influence and record selling numbers of The Beatles throughout the 60's was worldwide and dwarfed almost every other artist of that era .. ABBA were very big indeed in the 70s, but worldwide they couldn't compare with The Beatles .. In America ( the biggest and most important music market ) ABBA only had 1 song that was a chart topper ( Dancing Queen ) .. And regardless of whether you believe The Beatles or ABBA are the most popular today, that is a different question than how much each band dominated their eras at the time .. Like you, I am a huge fan of both bands,, so we can definitely agree about that .. But we'll just have to agree to disagree on our interpretations of their dominance.

He then asked Agnetha if it would be too painful for her to sing it, but she said she would. As the professional she is. Please react to The Day Before You Came. That song is brilliant in all it`s simplicity. Absolutely brilliant. Another great break up song by Abba: When All Is Said And Done, lead vocals sung by Frida.

Great to see you again Trevor. I think it's interesting, the counterpoint between the meaning of the song and how it goes uptempo is like a metaphor for the story of the band, going through extreme emotional situations while still having to function to put on shows and make recordings. Most young people and many of you Americans doing"reacting"-vids think the Judges in the lyrics are the juridic/legal ones .. As a Swede growing up at the time this song was released I`m pretty sure this is not what the lyrics are really about..(we rarely use/used Courts for fixing/making up after a divorce or a break-up).. "The Judges" who will "decide" in this song are most likely referring to people close to the divorcing couple.. and this tells us a lot about how we humans often take one part in such situations.. And if you think of it this way , these lyrics becomes even more deep, sensetive and great... I really believe that is why ABBAs got so huge ..and still remains so popular and appreciated!! Björn and Benny are legends in songwriting , that`s the true + big explanation !! :D :D

Hey Jay & Trevor, as you continue to listen to older music you will begin to notice the names of the songs can be confusing or taken in many different ways. Sometimes that is done by design. I wonder if Trevor would be interested in listening to some sultry blues rock, by one of the best blues-rock jam bands ever "The Allman Brothers Band -Whipping Post (9/23/1970)" two brothers Duane Allman and Gregg Allman from Jacksonville Florida formed this band in 1969. The founding members were Duane Allman (lead guitar), Gregg Allman (lead vocals, keyboardist), Dickey Betts (lead guitarist), Berry Oakley (bassist), Butch Trucks (drums) and Jaimoe Johanson. ABBA was one of the best legendary female rock bands of the 1970's and 80's. Nice reaction👍
