Saw Allman Bros Band (Gregg and Dickie Betts) 1988-ish. The band came out without Gregg. Several awkward minutes later Gregg stumbled onstage, clearly feeling no pain. Cigarette in hand, he sat down at the piano. It was dark, but I could see his cigarette swinging wildly while he tried to find the ashtray. I looked at my husband and said "Oh no." Finally he ground the cigarette out on the top of the Steinway, started to sing, and sounded like an angel. Thanks Gregg.

This band is everything! Dueling guitars, one of the best blues singers of all time and two drummers. Also they are from the Deep South and had a black man in the band in 1971! Revolutionary! ✌️🍄🍑❤️

This is Southern Rock at its very finest. These guys are true legends. I got to see the band live many years later in 1990, long after Duane had died, but Gregg and Dickey were still in the group. RIP Duane and Gregg...you guys are greatly missed. You should check out Midnight Rider. A Southern anthem!!

They really paid attention to how "tight" their sound was, and as a non musician , I don't know HOW these guys blend all there sound together , do the solos, etc. Just astounding and these guys were YOUNG, in their 20's! Hearing a band do that and groove, we used to say the were "cookin' " and the ABB coined the phrase "hittin the note" . Thanks J, glad we like the same band ! lol

Live Allman Bro’s shows we’re legendary, throughout the 40+ years they toured. Check out live tracks from their annual Beacon Theater residency during the 90s-2010s. Their modern era guitarists, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, plus Jimmy Herring and Jack Pearson for time periods, are among the best living guitarists. There’s some great video of them with Eric Clapton at the Beacon. Instrumental tracks “Jessica” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” are highly recommended.
@mycomimic4 жыл бұрын
Also important to emphasize is you get to experience two legendary bass players in the modern era as well. Allen Woody from 89-97 ( when he and Warren Haynes left and made Govt Mule their primary focus) and Otiel Burbridge until the final live shows a few years back. Plus the post 1989 lineup adds Marc Quiñones on percussion.

I saw them live a couple of times around this time when Duane Allman was still alive & they were so incredibly good. Both Dicky Betts & Duane superb guitar players and Greg Allman singing just perfect! Unfortunately Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident in October of 1971 but that band carried on & continued to put out stellar material...phenomenon live band. Their Live At The Fillmore East LP is one of the best live rock LP's of all-time for sure!

Kathy here, I met Greg when I was 14 years old. He is singing lead, while brother Duane is the blonde guitar player, and then Dickie Betts is the dark-haired guitar player. I'm from Georgia - all of Georgia wept when Duane died in a motorcycle accident. We lost Greg a few years back. One of the greatest Southern Rock Bands ever in my opinion. I am 68 years old and love seeing the younger generation hear the music your parents and grandparents grew up on. No auto tune, just great singing and playing.

The slide guitar was really on point because Greg borrowed that song from the Blues great Elmore James (the king of the Dobro slide guitar). Southern Fried Rock was heavily influenced by Delta and Electric Blues.

How unfair to have Duane Allman AND Dickie Betts in the same band?
@WGBader3 жыл бұрын
This happened because Duane wanted Berry Oakley on bass. Berry was in Dickey's band, The Second Coming. When Duane said he was going to steal Berry, people told him it was impossible because he and Dickey were inseparable. Duane replied, "Then I'll steal Dickey, too". The rest is history.
