Ugh, no. Their version of BYT is awful, especially with the Vanessa Carlton "mmm bop bop" stuff. Typically Adam Duritz took a nice song and turned it into his special brand of relationship angst. He really plays up the last verse and makes the whole song about losing a girl. He should try Joni's version.

This song is actually about him and his friend whose last name is Jones at a Flamenco bar. They were sitting by a table with 3 girls and they couldn't work up the courage to talk to them. They were talking about how if they were Rockstar it would be easy. So he wrote this song. True story.

This was the first of many hit songs for Counting Crows. Adam Duritz, the lead singer, wrote the song about when he was still a struggling musician. He and a musician friend, Marty Jones, were at a bar (the New Amsterdam) looking across the room at girls who weren’t interested in them, talking about how when they become big stars in a band that things will be different and everyone will love them. Thinking that once they become famous that it will solve all their problems and they’ll never be lonely. Well, Adam did become a big star, did get the girls (many well known actresses including Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox from Friends), but found out that wasn’t true. It didn’t solve all his problems. He was still lonely. Duritz is known for his great songwriting in songs such as Round Here, A Long December, Rain King, Recovering the Satellites, Anna Begins, A Murder of One, Raining in Baltimore, Mrs Potter’s Lullaby, Angels of the Silences, I Wish I Was a Girl, Omaha, Hard Candy, Up All Night and Have You Seen Me Lately.

I was working at a record store when this album came out and it was the most exciting album any of us had heard in ages. It's spectacular. The album is fresh and so emotional. It's a perfect album. Every song is a gem. I have thousands of memories surrounding this album and this band. Seeing them in concert so many times really filled me up. You don't have to understand a single word Adam sings and you'll still get the emotions dead on bc he's so profoundly expressive.

Here's a Wikipedia excerpt about the lyrics and the message, etc "Lyrics and performances The song is about struggling musicians (Duritz and bassist Marty Jones of The Himalayans) who "want to be big stars," believing that "when everybody loves me, I will never be lonely." Duritz would later recant these values; and in some later concert appearances, "Mr. Jones" was played in a subdued acoustic style, if at all.[5] On the live CD Across a Wire Duritz changes the lyrics "We all wanna be big, big stars, but we got different reasons for that" to "We all wanna be big, big stars, but then we get second thoughts about that"; he also changed the lyrics "when everybody loves you, sometimes that's just about as funky as you can be" to "when everybody loves you, sometimes that's just about as fucked up as you can be."[7] Some believe the song is a veiled reference to the protagonist of Bob Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man",[8] based on the lyric "I wanna be Bob Dylan, Mr. Jones wishes he was someone just a little more funky." According to Adam Duritz on VH1 Storytellers, "It's really a song about my friend Marty and I. We went out one night to watch his dad play, his dad was a Flamenco guitar player who lived in Spain (David Serva), and he was in San Francisco in the mission playing with his old Flamenco troupe. And after the gig we all went to this bar called the New Amsterdam in San Francisco on Columbus."[9] In a 2013 interview, Duritz explained that even though the song is named for his friend Marty Jones, it is actually about Duritz himself. "I wrote a song about me, I just happened to be out with him that night," Duritz said. The inspiration for the song came as Duritz and Jones were drunk at a bar after watching Jones' father perform, when they saw Kenney Dale Johnson, longtime drummer for the musician Chris Isaak, sitting with three women. "It just seemed like, you know, we couldn't even manage to talk to girls, ... we were just thinking if we were rock stars, it'd be easier. I went home and wrote the song," Duritz said.[10] In the live version of the song, as on the album Across a Wire: Live in New York City, the first couplet of the song is a quotation of the 1967 song So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star by The Byrds."

I'm with you, man. This song is special! I love that the video is shot in an apartment in San Francisco. This is what it felt like in SF in the 90s. And those were good times.

This song shaped my thinking!! Found it in my local small town library when I was like 12 or 14, and loved it ever since!! It had the acoustic version on this single, which blew my mind. First time I understood acoustic and studio versions

I bought this album not long after it came out, and this song has only grown in my estimation ever since. I'd venture to say it's one of the greatest singles of the '90s. It's probably in my top 10 ever.

Love counting crows. Saw them in concert with the wallflowers. One if the best concerts ever. You should check out more counting crows as well as wallflowers. The lead singer of wallflowers is bob dylan's son.

I've never been addicted to a song like I was to this one. It came out in my sophomore year of college and I played the hell out of it. I believe I had the CassSingle (a cassette single) and played it, rewound it and played it again, and then again, and then again....

Lol, this song changed your whole freaking world today! You better listen to it again :) Yes this song is about the seeking of fame and how he feels that it will mean he's truly loved, at least that's what I read somewhere. I'm ashamed to say that even though I'm of that era, I somehow missed this song and didn't discover it until around 5-6 years ago. Same for the song What's Going On by 4 Non Blondes.
Happy 4th of July 😂
