growing up in seattle in the 90s this band and this message hits me every time. suicide and drug abuse were part of my childhood and this song gets it. this is probably one of the best songs of all time. im gonna go wipe my tears and blow my nose now.

Adam (vocals) refers to "Maria" quite often. He has said in interviews that "Maria" is a form of himself. The Female form in which he can express feelings unable from a males perspective. The poetry written by this man never ceaces to amaze me. Great reaction!

This was my favorite band in High School in the 90's. I've always had an easy connection with their music no matter how long it's been since i've heard them. I swear Adam is made of magic. Also, yes the lyrics change a lot... Almost every time I hear him perform a song, they change... Every. time. Some times he add lyrics from other songs... but the result is always devastating..

Old guy here, but when Counting Crows came to my attention in the 90's they became one of my favorites. Adam Duritz puts a ton of feeling into every song.

Counting Crows are a guilty pleasure of mine. I prefer the studio version to this, but still here for it. The lead singer, Adam Duritz, suffers from dissociative (depersonalization) disorder.

Often? You mean always right? That's one of the things that makes Adam so special. He never sings any song the same way twice

Still does! As a singer who always keeps improvising sometimes i don't like it as much as the album recording, but other times it's supernatural how well he does it. One of the greatest.

This is such an incredible, amazing band, with some absolutely gorgeous songs. Anna Begins is probably my favorite. You're absolutely right in that a lot of this is new material, added decades later, and it's fucking amazing. And it's a long part, i think you can tell where it begins and ends. To me, it feels like him opening up even more then his already very open original lyrics and arrangement, and how more troubled he has been then people have thought. "More then just a little bit misunderstood" is, in my interpretation, a reference to how a lot of people excuse away issues that very scared, mentally ill kids have, that they often don't dare talk about, followed by "She has troubles acting normal when she's nervous" indicates that the issues started young, but he learnt to manage them... Until he gets nervous. It's worth mentioning obviously meant something deep for him, seeing as it's the first song, on their first ever album. I hadn't seen this version before now, thank you so much for sharing it. Not ashamed to say a i cried a little.

there are so many different live versions of htis song, with so many having their own elements to them, he often puts in other songs or just adds stuff on his own in the middle of the song, while the original is 4-5 minutes, some live versions extend out to b3 9-14 minutes with extra lyrics. He just lets it all out during this song.
@izbo109 ай бұрын
this version uses a lot of extra lyrics from their other song "have you seen me lately" should be noted the acoustic version of that song is amazing from their double live album across a wire.

As others noted, Adam often remixes and improvs sections of the songs. The "I was out on the radio" section is actually from another song of theirs called "Have You Seen Me Lately." I absolutely adore live Counting Crows performances.

Quickly becoming one of my favorite reactionists. So you can count on some referrals for other reactions. Maria is also rumoured to be Maria McKee, herself a prolific singer/songwriter, who was the leading vocals for the 80's cowpunk band, Lone Justice, and later a solo career after disbanding from Lone Justice. She did backing vocals for a couple songs on August and Everything After, the album from which "Round Here" comes and for U2s cover of Credence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son". So there are two rabbit holes you can explore.

This sent me down memory lane. Incredible performance! To recommend the "next" song to listen to is a tall order. Without even considering later albums, pick any tune from their debut album, "August and Everything After". Most popular (but still incredible is "Mr. Jones", my personal favorites are "Perfect Blue Buildings" and "Rain King". Again, there is not a bad song on that album.

I’ve read a few places that Adam never intended for that line to refer to taking her life. “I think you should take a shot” is more referring to him chasing his dreams of being a star (on the radio), and she confesses that she is also realizing it’s time to take a leap of faith herself as she stairs up at the building and to the heavens. Maybe a leap to finally commit to him…maybe a leap to get help…maybe a leap to finally end their troubled relationship…or maybe to go back to Nashville.

Really great reaction/analysis. That part that holds everyone up..._"And the girl in the car in the parking lot...then she looks up at the building, says she's thinking of jumping..."_ always made me think of, lol, now stay with me...The clothes are off, the clothes being their childhood. They all talk big but they're still kids, on the cusp of growing up. They're looking up at building, of what they built as children and realize the only to become an adult is to jump...except then they have to leave everything behind. They hate that damn building. But it's theirs'. They built it. They're tired of being kids, tired of being told when to go to bed, tired of being told to wait, they can do whatever they want. If they jump. A metaphorical ending, but a death to an innocence nonetheless. Or...I'm just way overthinking this.

I believe "she" was trying to say that "You should try to take a shot, can't you see my walls are crumbling". As in, I'm already vulnerable like you stated but more so like kicking someone when they are already "down and out". I've been listening to these guys for almost my entire life literally
@lemsdarkapprentice2535 Жыл бұрын
loads of thanks of reacting to this and you are so insightful. Adam never sings their songs the same way twice, so each performance (even of the same song) has a different inflection, tone, emphasis, pauses, etc. So each take is unique and it's really valuable to see different versions of the same song to see how things change. Sometimes, they also intersperse the lyrics with those of other songs (either their own or from other artists). [el'sda2].

It bums me out sometimes that your introduction to so many songs is mediocre live versions. The lead singer of this band in particular goes out of his way to sing as differently as possible from the album version when he performs live. Do yourself a favor and listen to the studio version on your own time, it’s a completely different song.
@avesper42029 күн бұрын

@@avesper420 well enjoyment of a song rendition is a totally subjective thing, but I honestly think he sounds terrible here. Like, really terrible. I think you liking it is a "bad take" unless you've never heard the studio version AND your ears don't work.
@avesper42029 күн бұрын
@ I don’t know, honestly I like how he turns it into a completely different song on the spot with made up lyrics he made on the spot. Personally I would prefer the studio version, but I also don’t think this is a bad rendition of the song.
