This was an anthem about wanting to be famous before they were known. When it happened, Adam moved from San Fran to L.A. and worked in a bar for a year being a bartender. He wasn't ready for such fame.... it's sort of a folk indie rock that got popular in my opinion. Anyway, Adam is a true poet. Check out Anna Begins Counting Crows... a complete and total masterpiece of emotion and psychological introspection about a relationship he's not ready for.... Are we ever??

My buddy used to say that you can write the dumbest lyrics in the world, but the right music behind them MAKES them profound. Truth. My all time favorite band. First show I saw was 1996, the Recovering the Satellites tour with the Wallflowers. Blew my 16-year-old mind.

People talk about diversity but the most diverse thing Ive experienced is 90s alt rock which was the radio music of the day. There were all kinds of bands, there was a mix of rock, folk, and pop and everything in between.

"What was this genre... like 90's college rock." Yep, hit the nail on the head. Heavily influenced by 80's college rock like REM, The Cure, The Replacements, The Smiths, and other jangle-pop bands. It was the "other" sound that was going on that wasn't grunge.

Maybe my "album of the '90's". Adam Duritz is a great songwriter. Lots of poetry. Lot of angst, which can resonate with me. "Help me believe in anything". Love the little shout-out to Dylan too, the "poet" connection.

This is the song it seems they are most known for. They’re a great band, that has continued to put out quality music since the early 90s. Try anything off Recovering the Satellites, August and Everything After is great all the way through. Try Rain King, or Murder of One from that album. Thanks for reacting to them, cool to hear your take on them!

Other good '90s vibes include Toad the Wet Sprocket (anything off Fear is excellent) and Barenaked Ladies (my all-time favorite band; start with "Brian Wilson" or "What a Good Boy").

We always considered this to be Grudge rock. These guys came out around the time of Narvava, Pearl Jam, ect

But not grunge at all. Jangle-pop a-la REM, Gin Blossoms, etc.
