Fun fact. This song in particular is part of the Sydney Conservatorium for Music's composition course study. Professor Hindson commented on the event, saying: "I will be presenting “And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope” to the composition students at the Conservatorium next semester as an exemplar in structure, mixing timbres, meters, modes, how to approach virtuosity, sound and noise, extended performance and techniques. The students will need to study 2 technical aspects of what NE OBLIVISCARIS have done in their music, and then use these techniques in their own classical music compositions.

Hello! I saw a lot of comments answering that consistent bass drum rolls under slower hand patterns aren't considered blast beats, but I didn't see many giving a very good explanation of what the term does encompass, so I thought I'd give it a go. Blast beats are a family of drum beats derivative of the "skank beat" that revolve around a rapid, consistent pulse on both the snare and the bass drum. The traditional blast beat is phrased as consistent 16ths, with bass drum and cymbal on the 8ths and snare on the off-16ths, played at 160-300+bpm. There are many variants, however, and some of the prominent ones don't follow this alternation. The "hammer blast" (the terms were largely coined by metal drummers ;) ) is phrased as straight 8ths with cymbal, snare, and bass drum synced, and the "bomb blast" is the same but with bass drum on every 16th note in the measure. Triplet variants are also common and drummers often ornament blasts with added snare/bass drum notes and modified cymbal patterns, but as long as the beat is still felt as that fast pulse on snare and bass drum, it can still qualify as a blast beat.

5:45 "He's just got pillows jammed in there" That is because of the pedals he is using. They are very light and easy to move, but that means sacrificing power for speed. So in order to make everything sound nice, he throws triggers on the bass drums. Adding pillows in and keeping the heads super tight will make sure the triggers catch the slightest hit. It allows for him to maintain those fast feet for longer without having to put the extra effort in.
