This is incredible. As a largely self taught player of various instruments, I’ve been struggling for years to understand a consistent method to easily construct chords in any key from lead sheets, fully understand the notations and their subtle differences, not to mention the difference between diminished, half diminished, diminished Major etc etc… and all this in only Lesson 2. Thank-you so much. Formidable!

Thanks! The first lessons are a bit "dry" before kicking off with the really interesting stuff on lesson five onward (where we start to discuss functional harmony). Enjoy!

Loving the course so far. Am learning that chord melody from the previous course. A little difficult but I’m getting there, almost finish. Can’t put into words how useful these lessons are. This man is definitely gold. Thank you.😊❤

Like I said in the video, you don't need to actually play it in its original form, just memorize it/listen to it, because we'll be getting back to it over and over. We'll play simplified versions of it throughout the course, which will progressively get more and more complicated.

Thank you very much!! The way you broke it down to semi-tones, makes a lot of sense. I've only seen how to construct Major and Minors using numbered semi-tones. But have not seen the formula for all others!! I will have to memorized each construction type. Thank you again!!

Yep, it's all about rote memorization at the beginning ... there's no way around it. The good news is that the more you do it, the more "natural" it seems.

Thank you so much for this amazing lesson. I have seen lesson 4, went back to this lesson to learn the jazz balad. I can now play it completely (simple version) 😄 I have been practing my major scales and major chords. I have scale c to e inprinted now and I know 5 major cords chromatically going from C to E. Thanks for this. I wish you could make a structured checklist somewhere, so I can follow it step by step exactly. I want to watch the new released videos too but im afraid of going too quick. Cheers mate thanks again

Hi Lugo. Happy to hear these lessons helped you out. Take your time with each lesson, they aren't going anywhere. Keep two lists: videos you've watched, and videos you've practiced (it's ok to watch more, but make sure to know always which video to get back to and practice). Learning jazz piano takes years - there's no rush.

This course is amazing, truly amasing. Of course for someone self taught as myself and only starting to do jazz and trying to improvise is a lot of work BUT at least I understand it and it’s not overwhelming to the point I feel I can’t do it or achieve it. So many KZbin teachers and courses and the teachers either work too fast and worse even when slowed down their fingers are so subtle it’s hard to follow. This is clearly illustrated with the music clearly visible and at a good proper beginner pace. Many great piano teachers and even courses but they lack the ability to teach their craftsmanship like a bad maths teacher (but can do it themself just can’t teach!) or their illustrations are either out of focus, too small for the eye or just can’t follow it for various reasons. I’m so loving this course and am going to learn the chords via the jazz ballad illustrated for us to learn. Admittedly, I started learning the hard version and found it initially very hard but today it felt more comfortable moving from one chord to the next. I only got third through though. I will however, now learn the easier version in this video and start transposing. It’s like a light bulb has gone off. Even making sense of the chords e.g. Cm7b5 etc would be confusing but I understand now how to read these jazz chords cos this way will give greater understanding to the chords. I feel so excited and honoured that Mangold is taking time out of his life to do his best to help people that are so interested to learn jazz but no one really cares enough to take us through the concepts from beginner level. There’s too many adhoc random tutoring on KZbin. I can only thank Mangold. Huge thanks.

Any jazz standard! Honestly, just pick ANY standard. If you want suggestions, type in "Jazz Standards" into the KZbin search bar. For now, you're not equipped (yet) to handle minor keys, but you should do well looking at any standard in any major key.

Hi, thanks u so much for your amazing teaching and content that u put out for free , is the exact course I was looking for. I have a just one question 🙋 I’m trying to play the ballad in all 12 keys, but it’s seems that this task would take me more then few weeks. Are you recommending to first master this progression in all keys and just then move on to the next lesson, or it’s a good idea to keep it as a part of daily routine but in parallel continuing with the next lesson in that series of lessons?
@MangoldProject
@MangoldProject 11 ай бұрын
Do it in parallel. As we progress we will have lessons with more and less to do, with some weeks being "easy"; plus you'll get faster and faster at practicing concepts.

ANother excellent tutorial, thank you Maestro Assaf! I shall indeed practise as you recommend. I have one question, but please do not feel obliged to give me a length answer. Q: Regarding the 12 chord types - I know in due course, their constructs (e,g, "R, 4,4,4} will become 'muscle memory', but when starting out, presumably my only option is to *memorize* their constructs and transfer this to the keyboard as I play? OR -- will my later knowledge of SCALES take on this responsibility?
@MangoldProject
@MangoldProject 11 ай бұрын
There is no substitute for muscle memory. When I play Cmaj7 I don't analyze it - my fingers already remember a few ways of playing the chord. If I ever want to carefully compose something new that's different, but when, say, improvising jazz, your muscle memory will do a lot of the heavy lifting. As we go through the course you'll see explicit places where this "muscle memory" kicks into effect - for example, down the road I'll teach you "famous" chord voicings used repeatedly by pianists like Oscar Peterson or Bill Evans, and you'll just have to sit down and commit them to memory in all 12 keys.
@rgarlinyc

Grazie
@MangoldProject
@MangoldProject 10 ай бұрын
Fingering can be picked off the screen easily. The "Jazz Piano for Beginners" series assumes you are a beginner to jazz piano, but not completely to piano, so you should be able to figure out how to play a fairly simple melody in the right hand (there's always some compromise made in this sort of videos).

But how to play a 7th chord correctly? Mine just sound horribly, and also differently every time I play them - some notes appear a fraction of a second later than others, some notes are randomly louder or quieter than others, etc. There's some basics in the technique that I'm probably missing (e.g., maybe using the arm wrist too much).
