Welcome to the NorthernEar reaction to channel! Tonight is the turn of Metallica and their song Blackened. This was a special Patreon request from Prof. Metal who wanted me to listen to this, as i hadnt really heard anything off And Justice For All yet and was one of the first metallica songs with Jason on Bass!
Tell me a bit about AJFA and where it's place in Metallica history is!

Guys, this is NOT a remaster of a live recording. That video is off of the “Live shit: Binge & purge” video set, and was filmed in 1989 in Seattle. This version of Blackened is an already existing remaster of the album version from the game “Guitar Hero”. All the supposed remaster-er did was take the version from the game and lay it over the video from ‘89 in Seattle. There are some major differences, including missing improvised lyrics from James and the solo being different. I don’t think the guy who’s reacting knows that the guy who said they remastered it is a liar and a fraud though.

Well, I'm the one who suggested that Tommy here react to it, but Ahdy who I see has already replied to you... is the one who remastered it. We're all aware that the video is of the '89 Seattle concert, and yes Ahdy does take the isolated tracks from the Metallica Guitar Hero game, but he also remixes and remasters them. You should probably go watch his original video, and use a quality pair of headphones, to hear all of the differences.

The peak of metal. Saw this tour and it was note perfect and heavy as hell. I am a recording engineer and this guitar tone has something I call "box flex". More trivia: I read somewhere that the band members tried to avoid the common pitfall of blowing all their money and, instead, learned about investments, etc. and invested wisely. With some luck that paid off and they reinvested a lot of their money in real estate in the San Francisco Bay Area. That ensured that by the time that their most commercially successful album was released (the one after the album that this song is on), they already more money than they knew what to do with. Their albums before the so-called "Black Album" (their most successful by far) didn't sell that well initially, but the success of the Black Album led LOADS of people to buy their earlier albums and now most people say either their second album (Ride the Lightning) or their third album (Master of Puppets) is their best.

Hi! First of all, this will be a long comment. I'm sorry for that but there's a lot on my mind right now! I'm a new subscriber and I started to listen to your clips yesterday and ended up going to bed way to late! 🤣 I love the way you analyzes the songs. Since I'm Swedish and English isn't my first language, it's very interesting to hear you analyze the lyrics as well as the music. About Metallica! Since their debut album, Kill 'em all, they've only changed their bass player. First they had Cliff, who got killed when their tour bus crashed in Dörrarp in southern Sweden. After that they had Jason who apparently never got completely accepted in the group since he allways had to compete with "the ghost of Cliff"! Eventually he left the band and was replaced by Robert Trujillo! There's a documenary called "Some kind of monster" where they were close to breaking up but took help from a psychologist to find their way back. Here you will see Rob's audition. The three bass players are a bit different from each other and it would be interesting to hear you analyze the difference between them. Next topic! If you haven't heard them I would recomend Volbeat! The music is quite straight forward but it's an interesting mix of different music genres. If you want to listen you can start with "Sad man's tongue" and follow up with "Die to live". Last topic! I come from Heavy Metal and have broadened my music taste over the years. One "blind spot" for me is Jazz. It has intrigued me for a while and I think it's time to dig in to that! I'm curious about the complexity and playfulness in Jazz! Since you come from Jazz and have started your journey into Metall maybe you could help me start my journey in the other direction. A metallhead's introduction to Jazz if you like! Thank you for a great channel!

Thank you Anders! It’s great to have you with us! I have family not far from Därörp in Ljungby, so next time I go and visit them, I will make sure I visit the memorial stone there. I think lyrics are a big part of a song. A lot of people say you should just sit and listen to the song as a whole package and don’t take in the lyrics, but for me they tell a story and give you an insight into what the songwriter was feeling, thinking that day. For me it’s the same attraction that so many have with Twitter/Instagram when they follow a famous person just to see what they do day to day. Lyrics give you a glimpse into their mind and it can be special. As for Jazz! I would say follow it from the beginning! A sub genre of Jazz called Bebop would be a good place to start. First half of the 20th century and up until then, Jazz had pretty much been big bands full of talented black musicians, often (but not always) fronted by white singers and taking all the credit. Big band Jazz was also very structured and quite restrictive musically. Everything had to sound ‘nice’ as it was so commercial, so Bebop was a bit of a ‘rebellion’. A chance for people to really show off their talents. It’s very fast, very technical, frantic with some fantastic chord progressions and I think if you have the context of why the genre existed, you appreciate the music more. Some great artists from Bebop are Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk. From there, I would move more chronologically, once these guys started to make a name for themselves, some of them, in particular Miles Davis became known as one of the greatest musicians in recent history, having a career over many, many decades. If you follow Jazz through the years, you will see how electronic instruments influenced the sound, how jazz started to create other genres such rock and roll, funk, Rnb. My favourite artists are Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Wes Montgomery (check out his ‘octave’ playing style) I’m not sure how far up Sweden you are, so i don’t know how Denmark-friendly you are :D but there is a fantastic Danish double bass player called Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen which I only discovered on this channel! Take a listen to him too! Sorry this comment is so long! :D my Swedish is bad but tack så mycke för skrivar och har en bra dag :)

Here's some trivia about Metallica: this is (I don't think) the first album with Jason Newstead. The band put out a mini-album called "Garage Days Revisited" which just consisted of covers. Many years later, the band re-issued that album as "Garage, Inc." and the re-issued version included MANY more covers (it's a 2 disc album). I HIGHLY recommend that you check out Garage, Inc. as Metallica, IMO, did a fantastic job of re-imagining lots of older songs that most people wouldn't have heard of. The album that this song is from, And Justice For All, came shortly after the cover album.

So, ...And Justice For All is Metallica's first album after Cliff, but it was released in 1989, not 1987. However Jason did join the band like a month after Cliff died. So, he had been in the band basically as long as Cliff by the time they released their next album.

Garage days re-visited was his first because the other guys didn't want to any new stuff just after Cliffs death they were feeling Jason out to see how well he fit in that way if it went tits up they would have an out and he wouldn't be on any new Metallica songs just covers from Garage Days

"I LOVE THE BASS THERE"... 5 possible explanations: (1) he was hallucinating (2) he is the only man on earth capable of hearing Jason's bass on this album (3) he can't tell the difference between a guitar and a bass (4) the song he was actually listening to was a jazz cover of blackened (5) he got paid by Jason's mother to say this

Bass is very audible at that part on this mix. Especially the rattle. There isn't much boom in the bass still, but you can hear the bass at that part.

James scooped his tone on this album, which means he cranked the high and low knobs on his amp and turned the mids way down. Combined with his pickups he uses and distortion level, that gave him this really bassy, barky tone. He used to do ALL the album rhythm tracks. I don't think there was just much space left for bass, and to be honest, on this album alone, Jason's bass work was a little off. Super heavy album. One of their greats that for sure and stands alone tone-wise.

I believe AJFA was Metallica's bridge between their thrash roots and their new mainstream sound born on the Black album, basically the band had to make a decision, stay thrash and risk being left behind and forgotten or adapt to the times and become what they are now. It's been 30 plus years and Metallica is still well known so the decision to adapt and evolve worked. Long live Metallica

To honor Cliff? They muted Cliffs instrument to honor him?
@redgamer821
@redgamer821 4 жыл бұрын
It wasn't to honor Cliff, it was in grievance because of him and it being taken out on the "new guy". I am pretty sure cutting the bass out from the mix completely isn't what Cliff would have been thinking if he wanted to be recognized, let alone honored. Jason had some great parts on this album, and it's honestly a shame that he's been cut out of the mix. What I find ironic is that Jason wrote the intro to blackened and played it on bass. Can't imagine what it must have felt to be muted from a song you wrote.

AJFA is a great album,regardless of the original mix. It's definitely their most "proggy" album. All of the songs are 6 minutes or longer with the exception of "Harvester of Sorrow" ( a definite must react, btw!). Because of what they did on this album,it directly influenced them to "streamline" their sound and approach to the next album "Metallica" or "The Black Album". For awhile the only song off this album they played live was "One" after getting the feeling the audience (and themselves) were getting fatigued from the length of the songs. This version isn't my favorite, I like it and it's nice to hear the bass, but what bothers me are the little vocal effects leading into the verses. Don't dig 'em. Great reaction as always!
