Thanks, truly appreciate it! I realize it’s a bit surprising seeing someone my age into jazz but I think my overall goal like with the videos and even in conversation with people my age is get them into jazz because there really is a history and importance with what these artists did. Getting into jazz was like a whole new world, I think it lets us all see things in a different light and have a true appreciation for not only this art form but any other art form out there as well

One small suggestion: you constantly repeat “very happy to get this”. It gets a bit annoying after a while. Really not necesssary.

Thanks, I definitely understand what you mean lol I think I do it more as a nervous type thing since I’m in front of the camera I guess it helps me transition into grabbing the next record easily but I’ll definitely try and stray away from that next time, thanks for the advice!

You are not alone bro. I remember when I was young, none of my friends were into jazz. So each time I get to interact with one who loves the genre, I was always in cloud nine. Lol

Great way to describe it, it really is a very rare thing but that just makes those interactions with people who do like it that much better!

Nice to stumble upon a new voice in the VC! Dippin’ has long been a fave, so you had my interest early! (This was my first time on your channel.} Love your passion! (Your knowledge definitely eclipses my own at times!) And our tastes seem to be well aligned, so I look forward to being turned on to some new stuff! Thank you!

OMG you found a Plus 4 OG copy! That album is so amazing but so hard to find! I have a semi-beat copy that plays with some noise but still not bad at all. And what a score on those Savoy records! So hard to find for any money. Dippin' is one of my favorite records. It's just so melodic and flows so well - the whole album is a masterpiece. Thanks so much for this amazing video. I just added like 6 records to my want list I have not even heard of until now. Cheers Ryan.

I almost went with an OJC for Plus 4 but I’m glad I didn’t😂 Dippin’ is also quickly becoming one of my favorites, I love the feel of Latin rhythms mixed with hard bop! Also thanks for the support! Glad you liked the video and found some new titles to search for!👍🏼

Great video and some killer finds! Sonny Rollins Plus 4 is an amazing album! Great background information on many of the titles! For the Off to the Races-Donald Byrd album, even though the back says electronically re-recorded to simulate stereo, that album is true stereo. Pretty much all post-1500 blue note titles that you see that statement on the back for are true stereo, it was just Liberty’s/United Artists’ way of stating that they were releasing the album for the first time in stereo, but they used Van Gelder’s 2 track tape to create the lacquers and the album in stereo.

Strictlyheadies is awesome. I live in the same city as him and I've bought some records from him a few times. I've actually been over to his place and seen his amazing collection in person. Crazy stuff to see all of that in one place. Also I love the Prestige blue trident mono label too. Those are the reissues I seek out from the mid 1960s and they always sound great. Also on Donald Byrd Off To The Races, there are no stereo pressings with Van Gelder mastering beyond the original pressings.
@amanandhismusic2 жыл бұрын
I can’t even begin to imagine how it felt! I have a handful of trident label pressings but I do need to look for some more since they’re generally more affordable than originals. And good to know about Off To The Races, I kinda figured there wouldn’t be since it was on that 2nd gen liberty disc which I don’t think I’ve ever seen with a Van Gelder stamp nice to know for sure though, thanks!
@thibs24422 жыл бұрын
@@amanandhismusic yeah a lot of those 1970 Liberty blue/black labels do have Van Gelder stamps actually.
@amanandhismusic2 жыл бұрын
I was talking about the white and blue label still I think it was those late 68’ pressings. It is a bit weird that some of those are missing the Van Gelder stamp though since the blue black label has them most of the time
@thibs24422 жыл бұрын
@@amanandhismusic Yeah it pretty much always flows from the Liberty master it seems to me. Like if Rudy mastered a Liberty version then you will find van Gelder mastering in all the later reissues. But if there is no Liberty pressing with Van Gelder mastering then none of the later repressings will have it either. I'm not sure why Rudy didn't remaster some sessions in the Liberty era though. I think it was probably the low sellers or low catalog numbers because a lot of the ones Rudy never remastered are in the late 1500 series and early 4000 series.

Ryan - You are so knowledgeable! Can you recommend some reading material to get me more informed like you on this type of jazz? 61 years old looking for guidance from you my young brother...
@amanandhismusic2 жыл бұрын
Thanks David! I’ll admit most of my knowledge is just random bits of info I’ve picked up but I think overall the most beneficial thing for me was the PBS jazz documentary series by Ken Burns which is an amazing deep dive into each era for jazz and after that I’d say all the biographies like for each artist in particular because in some way they’re all connected so for instance you don’t just learn about Lee Morgan while reading his biography you learn about the artists and environment he was around too! It took me a little bit to realize how special those books were but I’ve definitely learned quite a bit from each of them. For information on the records like pressing details and such I’ve honestly just scrolled through and messed around on discogs in my free time looking at individual releases. I never really realized I was learning and studying it all I was just interested in all the details and history

What is the significance of the folded sleeve. Great video again.
@amanandhismusic2 жыл бұрын
In most cases when a record was sold back in the day the sleeve was usually folded so when I find them like that I usually have luck with the vinyl being almost untouched! Thanks for the support as well!

I still need It’s time, and in flight. Where did you happen to grab those at the prices you got them at?
@amanandhismusic2 жыл бұрын
I got them at my local shop, “Good Boy Vinyl” I don’t think they ship but if you live near Delaware I think the trip would be worth it! Somehow it’s not usually picked over whenever I go, it’s not the biggest shop but they have a decent selection of new releases and lots of used jazz.

Hello , i am looking for a track/ album for several years now, maybe you have any idea, thank you for any help in advance. THis is the info i can provide: i heard the track before 2018. Style is contemporary (i would say say, the record is from at least the 90s, maybe even from 2000-2017). Now the track starts with a single note on an electric piano. the key is stroke a few times, each time a little hard. Then the piano plays an intro. After the, a larger (4?5?6? players) horn section comes in playing tutti. it's not a slow track, it's quite forward, but as said, rather modern. it's not acid jazz, not funk or similar, rather like modern UK style or french or german like Nils Wogram, but it also could be an anthem international record ( though it does not sound like "tribal style conscious jazz). Do you maybe have any idea? i guess there are not too many tracks, that start with that repeated not on one key on an electric piano. thank you so much!

According to Mike Espsito at the Ingroove, the Tone Poet titles are all in print but some are awaiting a repress. Nice selection and glad to see someone exploring beyond the top 50 jazz Lps. I never was fond of Sketches of Spain or Miles' work with orchestrator, Gil Evans. I have all of the selections with exception of one of the Charlie Byrd Lps. Since you like Johnny Smith, did you ever get into Tal Farlow?
@amanandhismusic2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, it took me a little while to get into the more orchestrated side of miles. I don’t have any of Tal Farlows work but I do listen to him occasionally on Spotify! He makes an appearance on Howard McGees Vol. 2 on blue note and I’d say that’s probably my favorite of his recorded material I definitely need to branch out a bit more though

The West Montgomery trio you think that would sound better a mono than it would stereo?
@amanandhismusic2 жыл бұрын
Usually I would say mono for guitar albums but with the way this was recorded you can hear how the studio was set up with the separation of stereo and it’s sounds so dynamic and real because of it
