Jazza recently released some resin bits and this super cool bust, based on his custom Space Bears (Astra Primursa) Warhammer 40K Space Marine chapter. I couldn't resist buying the STL from PuppetsWar, printing it up on my Elegoo Saturn, and painting it. Here's how I approached that, some of my processes, and how it went!

Have you ever painted a bust? Or maybe you paint them often? I'd love to hear your point of view on that - comment below!

Thanks, Brent! Yeah - he's pretty decent. I think, if I'd thought more about lighting placements, I could have made him more dramatic. And of course smoother.

This is so beautiful! The main lesson I learned from this video is that as an artist, you're always going to be critical of your own work and you focus on all the tiny flaws, but other people looking at it don't get caught-up on tiny imperfections and they appreciate it as a whole. I get that this is a fine balancing-act because the inner critic can help to drive you to new heights. Thankyou for putting your style on this bust; you've created a stunning piece of art.

This looks amazing! I think you did a great job. I love painting busts. Much easier for me to see the details. You should do more. Marco's channel is great. I too learned to make a story for my models. It's a great help in picking colour schemes, lighting, etc. Keep up the great work and content!! 🇨🇦

I appreciate the range of personalities I’m following on YT, from: HELLO GUYS!…to Hey Goody PP’s (still wondering about this one) - to What’s up, Rockstars? To Goober’s Bob Ross-alike - To your factual and relaxed style, where you explain more of your challenges and how you’re working through them. I appreciate the range and diversity, but I’m drawn more often to your style of sharing/teaching - so thank you, and cheers 🍻

It would be interesting to see you repeat this process. Take everything you learned painting this model and print out another one and apply your new knowledge. It looks to me like you could have gone much darker on the fur oil wash to deepen the shadows behind the head for a greater contrast and framing of the head against the fur. Skin is a great place to switch to oils, especially given their blending properties.
@TheMiniJunkie

I think I might get a lot fewer views if I try to do a second video with the same bust. However, what I might try is to paint the Octavius bust using the things I learned here. To your point, oils might make the flesh a lot easier to paint!

Love your technique and color scheme! The fear of screwing up a paintjob is very relatable, I have maybe a dozen miniatures that I don't want to paint yet because I feel that I could not do them justice with my current paint skill level. I know it's not helpful to think like this. Do any of you have tips to get over this hurdle?

@@TheMiniJunkie I'm having problems seeing that, especially on the shield on the back which looks to me to be somewhat uniformly lit. It may be a translation issue in video format, though. I love the color choices and how the red is modulated in the armor pieces.
