I think keeping to a denatured color palette and only having one contrast highlight point goes a long way. The skin should also be a sickly or an off-color, and pay attention to the undertones of the colors used (all warms or all cools). Keep experimenting though!
@Grizl3yB3ar15 күн бұрын
hey! So: To answer your pinned post! Essentially, with 'grimdark' style of painting, as someone has said in another comment string, desaturation is imperative. My chaos warriors (Slaves to Darkness from AoS) have EXTREMELY desaturated colours. So much so, that apart from a SINGULAR point of colour, it pretty well all blends in on itself. The brightest point(s) on all my models is their eyes. They're 'glowing' red. And that's the only colour application I put on that isn't necessarily muted, per se. Second: Choice of model doesn't change a thing. You can paint anything to look grimdark, thats not an issue, its all about colour pallet and refining it to have high-contrast with low vibrancy. third: go heavy-handed on the grim. You shouldn't be able to necessarily see the colour of whatever it is you're griming up. It should be brown before you wipe off. I usually wait until its dried by hair-drier to apply mineral spirits and wipe off the excess. have fun! :)

Thank you so much for this imformative video. I was thinning and using low Pressure with my vallejo primer etc had all sorts of issues. Did what you said straight out of the bottle pumped the pressure up to 30psi perfect result. Thanks again.. Just to let you know Im a scale modeler who was using Mrsurffacer1500 which ive never had any issue with at all. However now I can prime without the fumes.

Honestly not entirely impressed with the Vallejo primer. It's smooth but it feels like it isn't actually adhered to the model, it is like a taught rubber skin. Have had a few models where the primer for nicked and it peeled away like Patrick Bateman's face mask. I'm waiting on a delivery of Mr Finisher 1500 after watching some of the positive reviews.

Vallejo white primer is absolute trash. I just used it for my zenithal and it was super thin and quickly pooled in recesses after settling. I’m 110% refunding it and will never use a Vallejo primer again!

You ever find problems using Vallejo white primer?
@TheMiniJunkieАй бұрын
No, although to be honest I don't use it much. I tend to use their very light greys.
@chazk53762 ай бұрын
All fine and dandy, but maybe not victim blame. I can follow directions like anyone else and some primers just are fail. AK has a crap primer. I tested AK, Vallejo, Badger. Vallejo and Badger cure just fine. AK never does. I have samples weeks old and the primer is removed from a simple drag of a q tip. People like Badger because honestly, it's easy to push through an airbrush. Vallejo black is easy, but as soon as we need those fancy whites and grays, thinning becomes a hassle and results vary by the hour if you don't work in a climate controlled room. Badger shrugs all this off and is super easy and durable, white is just as easy as black.

i´m getting tired of the grimdark this, and grimdark that. I miss the good old days from the 80s and 90s where things were goofy, in your face over the top and didnt take itself seriously. I guess it is a sign of the times, but it just doesnt do it for me.

@@stephanejacopin9954 I avoid varnishing the colorshift paint, as it will kinda wreck the effect. If necessary to varnish other parts of the model I’ll apply it carefully with airbrush or hand brush (matte varnish).

If your primer is rubbing off, you've thinned with too much water, thereby destroying the surface tension. Try flow improver instead

But the big question remains unanswered: Sorting by color or by brand? Or some combination of both. I have the racks and the paints, but so far my sorting onto the racks is not meeting the needs of expedient access to the paints as I need them.

Good question! I do a little of both. I mostly sort by brand, and then I group colors or paint types (shades, washes, whatever) together as best I can.

5 years later, this is one of my videos that continues to draw views and opinions :) I do wonder if miniature painters have a slightly different experience with these than scale modelers (vehicles etc) but I'm not sure. I will say that in the end, I continue to use Vallejo Surface Primer almost exclusively and never have a problem with it (I also never sand it). I'm sure hobbyists can't go very wrong with either choice they prefer!

A good test would be to use them on a plane and then use masking tape, I just ran into an issue where the masking tape peeled off the paint and primer (Vallejo)
@joshuabutler233421 күн бұрын
I think the big issue is that most people had their first major issue (due to either water in the hose, improper cleaning, too high/low pressure, or improper turn off.) while using one or the other primer and just blamed the paint. Similarly, after encountering it they reset everything thus, likely fixing the other issue unintentionally. I have this problem all the time with my FDM printer as a thousand different things can cause one issue so I have to go through each individual potential problem before eventually finding the correct solution.

Scale Modelers use solvent based primers because Acrylic primers do not stick to smooth flat surfaces well. They stick to minis because of the detail, which is also why miniature painters have such varying results. Because Mini's have such a varying degree of detail. You can verify these claims on spoons. It will leave pinholes buffing metallics on cotton pants. I've spent more times prepping spoons than I have on model kits, washing, drying, 99.0% ISO wipe, dry, sanding, wash, dry. Only for the acrylic primers to leave pinholes exactly the same way they do on unprepped spoons :\... pinholes through paints that have a lacquer on top. Right to bare plastic. Like it was never 'primed'. Every single spoon I painted did this to varying degrees. A finger nail scratch? As if you accidentally caught a model while reaching for it? Right through the paint and primer. Acrylic Primers are not plastic primers. They are a cheap Gesso based solution that can be resold to hobbyist for a nice profit %. A true plastic primer bonds chemically to the surface. I understand why a lot of people are hesitant and looking for an alternative, but when it comes to plastic, Rustoleum or similar is the way to go. I've got parts primed with Rustoleum that have been kicked around on my shop floor for a year. No damage to the primer at all. I can't even buff badger on soft surface or it falls off...

I'm new to certain aspects of this hobby but not entirely. My recent trip over the internet while doing some research tells me that Vallejo products seem to need a little extra shakig and mixing. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a lot of user error here. As I'm replacing my old Apple barrel paints with better things, I invested $5 in some glass beads to use as agitators. I expect that will help me get ahead of some of these reddit complaints. An upside of getting into this now is that Vallejo is refreshed much of their hobby product line -- whether that is some of the formulas or simply the labeling -- it's easy for me to be sure that I'm getting product that has not been sitting in a sun-bleached paint rack for 8 years at a game shop.
