Tips for Painting Miniatures - Easy Ways to Improve

Rosemary and Co. is another company with good brushes. However, I think it is important to note that while it is useful to strive to better oneself at any hobby, it may be harmful to do so with the expectation that you will paint as well as a professional that has been doing so for a couple of decades. I have seen people give up quickly because their second mini didn't end up looking like the box art. I often recommend to strive for improvement, not perfection. Inspiration is important, and perfection is not impossible! But painting is a skill, and like any other, takes development. And brushes make a hellova difference.

One of my favorite things about mini painting is that every time I paint a mini, I feel like I learn something. Improving each time is part of the fun.

Your channel inspired me to pain my first mini a couple of weeks ago. I think I did a pretty good job! I love the tip on how to hold the brush very helpful. I've played D&D for 35 years and I am always "that guy" with the unpainted mini at the game. The way you present, takes away the intimidation of painting. Thank you!

Thanks for the great video. Maybe I'm alone at this but I preferred the old background with the shelves, and cool youtuber lighting. It looked more professional to me. Again just a small pointer as the content is just as good, I just prefer a more natural look to the videos myself.

I would love to see a "Tips" video to give advice on those finding it hard to paint such SMALL mini's (The D&D minis) or painting cloaks (like the hard part behind those small spaces), when/why to use inks to regular paints? These are just my "noobie" questions lol

Great job as usual Jarrett! If I may propose something, which I do sometimes for characters with a lot of equipment like DnD characters, to help with mini 'readability' is lining: using a black ink to define separation between elements. It allows the eye to precisely do demarcation for all colors instead of feeling a bit blurry. Eyes being lazy in general, minis will benefit from this technique which is super easy to use.

I paint my figs to one standard to get them out on the map... I do touch them up as time goes on, adding accents to refine details on them... once they get to the point that I like them (several game sessions later or months) I then varnish over them (done).

Yeah, brushes are important. I once bought a small brush instead of fine-tipped one. Never again.

This is good advice for pursuing a very neat and clean style. It is worth mentioning that a neat approach is one style that results in great looking miniatures. There's the other end of the spectrum, like Zatcaskagoon, where messy weathering and speed with different materials results in a fantastic result. That's not to say the more random approach is any easier to make look good than the neat approach, just a different skill set to master.

do paint alongs. mon'keigh see, mon'keigh do. requires a channel that does paint alongs, of course. I believe, Kris from Way of the Brush does them on his twitch channel. Maybe it's something you could do as well. does not need to be the same miniature, but the techniques should be appliable just the same.

This is 1st video about painting miniatures I hit dislike button. Lol, "amaaaazing" advice for a new painter - be neat. Yeah, grab overpriced GW paints and miniatures, go buy yourself sable brushes for $$$, which you`ll probably ruin anyway. And after you spend like a shit load of coins - sit, and struggle on every miniature you 1stimeever painting until you get at least top display quality. ROFL... GJ! now you out of a hobby due to it "bloody pricey, taking hips of time and stressing you off".
