I was planning on making a review video for these inks anyway because I've been using them all month, but when Jazza's video came out, I couldn't help but notice the paint he was using. So I want to talk about the Daler Rowney fluorescent acrylic inks and give them my review after using them for all of Inktober.
This was an incredibly fun series to work on, and I plan on making it into a coffee-table artbook in early 2021 - so if that sounds like something that interests you, then you can sign up at the link in the description to be the first to know when I start production on that. Yesss. Blue is super difficult to find... buuut, I have found koi water color (cakes that I grind up) set has a decent blue, that mixes pretty well with other pigments. Paul rubens has an opera line in a tube which is super convenient to mix the color palette you want. The blue is not fluorescent in paul rubens. But that's where koi and komoreli (not bright blue, but good addition for mixing) comes in on mixing. Also dan Smith manganese blue hue is fluorescent!! It's definitely a lighter color. Hope that helps explore!

heads up jazza was using glow in the dark mediums not fluorescent so that it wouldnt need a blacklight to glow but it definantly makes the colors brighter and made it easier for him to paint the semi translucent one for the hidden effects.. also i love what your doing and earned yourself a follow
@madameberry
@madameberry 2 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, only one of his paints glowed in the dark. I definitely remember him needing to buy a more powerful blacklight halfway through the video. Anyway this video wasn't meant to be a real dig, just a bit of a lighthearted joke. But if you thought this was cool, check out the video I made with glow in the dark oil paints; those were super neat to work with.

My guess is that the fluorescent paint doesn't reflect too much of scanner light. It reflects too little. The scanner light probably lacks UV alltogether, which means the photosensor reading the image doesn't get the fluorescent boost from the paint. This is compensated by exposing the whole picture some more, which means the white paper and the grey and black non-fluorescent pigments dominate more. And the fluorescent paint becomes more pale. It seems lighter, but it's because there's less of it and more of the paper shining through. It could be interesting to mount an UV light inside the scanner, when scanning these pictures.
@madameberry
@madameberry 2 жыл бұрын
Hm, that's an interesting theory. I don't know too much about how a scanner's sensor works, but I find it strange that it would behave differently than a regular camera. My guess was based on that the only difference is how close the light source is inside a scanner.

Hey,Madame Berry! Thanks for the info. I've been painting for black light for a couple decades,and maybe you can use these ideas: - you can try to digitally juice up the colors to come closer to the original,but the problem I'm trying to tackle is where to get prints made that use fluorescent pigments. I know it can be done. - I usually use tempera,so they're much more opaque,but I'd keep experimenting with mixed colors IF it is artwork to be displayed under black light. You can get some surprising,subtle results that I can't do without,but they're very dull under natural light. Only recently some companies created a fluorescent true white that should be indispensible,and I can't wait to try it. - One of the difficulties of fluorescent media are depth in the artwork,which gets tricky but can be done with a gradation of blending black with fluorescent paints. - I also sometimes use glow-in-the-dark paints,some brands being nearly invisible in natural light. I'm thinking, if I could rig up faders or 'something',of creating artwork which changes or reveals images between natural light,black light and glow in the dark. Thanks again! Oh yeah,I have yet to see a good black light LED lamp. Most definitely go with 'black light blue' fluorescent tube. Less visible light,more uv.

Hey, this is a ton of great info. Thank you! I love the idea of hiding some inks that are nearly invisible in natural light for a "hidden image" effect. When I was looking at some sticker suppliers, one resource suggested that a company called RX Skulls has fluorescent screen printing. I don't know if that's what you're looking for. Some risograph printers may also have fluorescent inks available. I'd be interested in finding more print options myself.

Look up darkbeam light! You want 365 nm (nanometers) for killer spectroscopy results. Most black lights that are sold including the fluorescent tube style are sitting at between 390 and 415 nanometers

Hey there! Ok so funny story, I just found your channel with this video. I picked up airbrushing a few months ago, and i guess I'm a freak but I've painted with nothing but UV paints. As a result, I've gotten really good with them, and I can help with a lot of the questions you posed in this video. I have a whole series of airbrushed paintings that are just UV, and they sell as quickly as I can make them! Being a huge fan of the cyberpunk/synthwave/retrowave genres is what got me into painting with these. Teal, aqua, and Cyan are my favorite colors to mix, and I can show you how to mix them, the paints I've tried, the ones that are awesome, and the other tricks Ive learned along the way. There is a vibrant blue I've found that looks amazing in daylight and UV. Lmk if you're interested! Looking forward to checking out your Cyberpunk series :) Great video, btw!

Do you think these would work for "Hydro Dipping" The process of adding soap to water (this step can be skippable) then dropping paint on the top of the water and seeing if it spreads out.
@madameberry
@madameberry 2 жыл бұрын
I notice these don't spread as much when doing wet-on-wet painting on paper, so that might be an issue, but otherwise it would probably work. Maybe I'll do a bit of a test and film it, drawing on top of neon-hydrodipped paper sounds kinda fun.

You should try the neon watercolors by Hydracolour on Etsy. OMG! They are gorgeous! I've tried every neon paint, marker, and ink out there, and the Hydracolour ones blow them all out of the water. Downside is they are handmade, so they're pricey, and you have to keep checking her account to see if there are any in stock.

@madameberry
@madameberry 6 ай бұрын
It probably depends on the exact product and what the pigment is suspended in, as well as where and how it's stored. I have some paintings from 2019 that are hung up in a somewhat dark area of my room that still fluoresce, but the pigment will lose effect faster if hung in a sunny area, and will stay stable longer if stored in the dark. That aside, I can't say for sure how long a properly stored fluorescent painting will stay light-fast.
