Use more soothing colours, lighter ones with just a few darker ones for contrast. And dont mud the colours, try to keep them separate or blend them softly on the edges. Abstract art is about showing an idea of something, a sketch that the viewer can finish on their own!

He's doing it the wrong way...you gotta have more fun with it like throw some paint on it or splat paint on it. Even shoot paint out of a gun or something crazy. Dip a basketball in paint then drop it on the canvas. Dip some cookie cutters in paint for different shapes and stuff. Use your dogs footprints or any random objects around the house. Try pouring paint or spinning the canvas on a cake spinner, try letting the paint drip down if you hold it on an angle, etc... abstract isn't about drawing abstractly it's about thinking abstractly using non orthodox methods. Don't even use a brush, rule #1 with abstract is forget all brushes. You can even glue some random materials onto the picture like real leaves or real hair or animal fur or actually cut out a t-shirt and use it as a real t-shirt in your painting or glue some sand onto it, glue some rocks onto it, put gold leaf on it, anything you can glue onto it use it, etc...You can even get those googly eye things for toys and use them

Hey Jazza! Try to clean your palette knife when switching colours so that your colours don't get muddy. The pressure that you apply with the palette knife will also influence the type of "stroke" you make. Harder pressure with the tip will scrape canvas, and flattening your knife with more pressure will drag most of the layers of paint, usually leaving the bottom layer behind and mixing all the removed paint. Lighter pressure will only drag the top layer of paint when you move it. Longer strokes will spread the paint further and will generally extend the original bottom layer while mixing it with the bottom colours of any new paint blobs you drag it across, with shorter strokes doing essentially the same but over a smaller distance. I generally prefer shorter and lighter strokes as it gives you more control over your colour mixes as well as reduces your chance of accidentally muddying your colours. You have three "layers" of paint in your blobs - the bottom, middle and top. The bottom layer is in contact with your canvas and depending on the paint pigment - will stain or discolour the canvas when scraped away. I prefer to only include the bottom layers in my strokes when I'm working with solid colours since I can guarantee that there will be no muddy mixes. The middle layer is essentially the same but will be responsible for most of the thickness in your painting. It's really unpredictable when working with multiple colours as you cant see how well its mixed together. The top layer is the layer that is exposed to the air and whose colours are visible within the painting, colour variations and gradients can be created by mixing sections of the layers eg: top to top, middle to top etc. The top layer will be responsible for the surface texture of your painting, so any final strokes on your top layer will be visible. It also helps to have more viscose paints (you can get paint thickener or just buy heavy-body acrylic/oils used for impasto) - you get more volume in your tubes, and waste less paint trying to achieve some texture. They sometimes use cheaper pigments in the more affordable paints, so you may sacrifice some vibrancy and lightfastness, but it doesn't really matter too much if you're not making archival quality artwork. hope that this helps!! it sounds really complex but it is really easy once you get the hang of it!!! Love your channel so much!!! - Binks

@MaxRide1
@MaxRide1 4 жыл бұрын
If you're an (professional) artist, you shouldn't need dark green paint because you can mix it. You would only really need it if you were specifically looking to do this sort of art on a regular basis. Since Jazza doesn't do abstract regularly, he won't have need for every colour of paint under the sun. He only needs the main "primary" colours and a few secondary colours to create an entire 'colour wheel'. p.s. "primary colours" aren't red/blue/yellow - they're cyan, magenta, yellow (and black), but that's a whole other conversation.

There’s too many kinds of abstract art for any approach to be “wrong”, but it seems like your main issue is you stress about and try to control the outcome. This kind of abstract painting will never turn out exactly how you imagine. Personally, I like to start with a color palette, or a brush, or a technique, any single thing I want to focus on, and just kinda go from there. Pick some nice colors and just make cool patterns with a palette knife or fan brush for a while and maybe one of them will turn out nicely! The other thing is sometimes you have to let a piece be done lol.

And then I had an art show and sold this “art” to my friends and family by manipulating them into thinking I had put lots of work into the art and I was really proud of it when I really just knocked them out in 30 seconds and knew it was rubbish. Probably some issues that may have effected the outcome 1. Considering the platform they use to make these videos. It’s more likely they go for cheap acrylic paints due to budget, easier to access and just less skill needed to use. (I.e. no mineral spirts, wiping off constantly on paper etc.) 2. Look like a lot of the time they place their palette knife of paint brush down its clean everytime 3. They probably allow for drying time after the gradation is done. (Also more reason to use acrylic vs oil drying time) 4. The colours you use are much darker tones than the ones in the video 5. Part of abstract is just having the eye to go “Ya, a bit of this colour over there would look great in this way” I do not have that talent by I know someone who does and his art always comes out nice

Okay... as someone who does abstract art, I'll just drop this bit of "wisdom" on how to do it: don't picture what you want it to LOOK like. Pure abstraction isn't about look it's about the feel. What emotion do you want to convey? Go with that. Put your emotion on the canvas. This can be chaotic, can be minimalist, can be orderly, but your emotion is the most important thing to make sure you get on the canvas. That's it. If you're working on an abstract piece and you don't think that color meshes well with the painting's emotion as a whole? Throw it out (or cover it up if it's already there). Your emotions are your friends.

@ConfusedOilPainter Abstract are may not for everyone but you're just being a jerk for not appreciating it yourself. I can't make it but I absolutely love it, to me the beauty in abstract art comes from the unknown intentions, the different meanings you can pull out of it. If I hang up a realistic piece on my wall it might be extremely impressive and beautiful but if I hang up an abstract piece of art I can wake up every morning and find new and interesting meanings, shapes and make up my own story in the art piece. But as HuffleRuff said the most important part is what emotions that it awakes that is the most important part. Being dismissive of a style you don't appreciate really just shows a lack of ignorance and understanding.

@Jennifer Haskin as I stated earlier I can't make abstract art that I enjoy myself but your question is impossible to answer. There are infinite ways and that's usually what defines abstract artists. Colours, shapes, overlaying, shadowing. It really just comes down to finding a colour pattern and a way of painting that you enjoy. Easier said than done, clearly I'm not able to do it but experimenting with shapes colours and unorthodox methods of painting is really the only way to find your style. Try laying a foundation (for the owl itself) and painting over/around it to find a satisfying result that suits you:)

JAZZA!!! Abstract is all about encapsulating an emotion entirely off of color. You keep on either turning the emotion into frustration or confusion. Pick an emotion and stick with it! Pick calm. And stick with calm. Make choices in colors to the canvas which help make you feel calm. Don’t let frustration come in because, “you don’t know!” Because there isn’t anything to know. It’s just feel. That’s it. Just pure feel. Does it make you feel calm? Then do it! No wrong answers. Whatever process makes you feel whatever feeling you are trying to encapsulate. It seems like you keep having your own inner critic get in the way about having to be something. But it’s just turning an emotion into colors on canvas. Just trust the emotion, turn off the, “what am I doing? What is it?” And just let it be colors of emotion on canvas. :)
